Huskies Shutout Devils (4/2/07)

In their first match of the Spring, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team were shutout by Bloomsburg University, 9-0 Saturday afternoon in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

The loss drops the Devils record to 4-8.

Bloomsburg swept all three doubles contests to open the match. The team of Iida Hokkonen and Emily Murphy defeated Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) 8-2 at #1 doubles, while Katie Hasyn and Tracy Nissenbaum defeated Rachel Salahub (Sr., Cedar Crest HS/Allentown, Pa.) and Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.) 8-0 at #2 doubles. Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) lost their #3 doubles match to Jacklyn Kelly and Emily Pratt by an identical 8-0 score.

In singles competition, Murphy defeated Bedway 6-0, 6-1 at #1 singles while Torie Cunningham defeated Sebastiani 6-0, 6-2 at #2 singles. Allison Carney defeated Salahub at #3 singles 6-0, 6-2 while Garber fell to Nissenbaum at #4 singles 6-0, 6-2. Kelly handed Perfetti a 6-0, 6-1 loss at #5 singles and Pratt rounded out the singles sweep for Bloomsburg with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Exler at #6 singles.

Bedway, Leonard fall in Quarterfinals of CACC Individual Tournament (10/21/06)

Amanda Bedway and Sarah Leonard each won their opening match at the CACC Individual Tournament Championship before losing in the quarterfinals at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon.

USP's women's tennis team was also awarded the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award in balloting done by the league's seven coaches.

Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) started the day by teaming up for the doubles competition. The Devils #1 doubles team opened the competition with tough match against Beka Elliott and Lori Pick of Philadelphia University, winning 9-8 (9-7). Bedway and Leonard then fell to the top doubles team in the tournament Lauren Neill and Rupali Parekh of Holy Family University, 8-3. Parekh and Neill later advanced to the championship match.

Neill and Parekh also ended the Devils' day in singles competition. Bedway opened the singles competition with a 10-0 win over Stephanie Bain of Goldey Beacom College before Parekh ended her season with a 10-7 win in their quarterfinal match. Leonard started her singles competition with a 10-0 win over Bethany Everett of Post University before the fourth-seeded Neill handed her a 10-0 loss in her quarterfinal match.

Bedway finished the season with an 8-5 singles record while Leonard concluded her season with a 7-5 record in singles competition. In three seasons of competition, Bedway is 26-10 (72.2%) overall in singles play. Leonard is 14-13 (51.9%) overall for her career in two seasons of singles play. As a doubles team, Bedway and Leonard finished the season with a 9-4 record.

Devils fall to Tigers in CACC Semi-Finals (10/15/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s tennis team’s season came to end yesterday afternoon as they lost 5-1 to Holy Family University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) semi-finals at the Springton Tennis and Racquet Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Due to conference rules, the first team to record five points is awarded the victory, thus not all matches were completed.

The loss gives the Devils a final record of 4-7.

USP’s lone point in the match came at the number one doubles spot. Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) handed Lauren Neill and Rupali Parekh just their second loss of the season, 8-5.

In other doubles matches, Shakir Willet and Quena Borres defeated , Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.), 8-1 at number two doubles and Liana Lui and Melanie Pulsinelli defeated Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.), 8-3 at number three doubles.

The Tigers clinched the win by winning three singles matches. Neill defeated Bedway, 6-2, 6-3 at number one singles while Parekh defeated Leonard, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at number two singles. The Tigers got the clincher from Borres at number three singles, defeating Sebastiani, 6-2, 6-0.

Bedway and Leonard will be participating in the CACC Individual Championships starting on Friday, October 20, 2006. The event will be held at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center in Philadelphia.

Devils Clinch Playoff Spot with a Pair of Conference Wins (10/9/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s tennis team secured a playoff berth in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships with a pair of wins over conference opponents Sunday and this afternoon.

On Sunday, the Devils defeated Caldwell College, 7-2. USP followed that win with a 9-0 shutout of Post University to finish the conference play with a 3-3 record, clinching the fourth and final playoff spot in the championships which will be held this weekend. Overall, the Devils improve to 4-6.

The Devils entered Sunday’s match needing a win to clinch at least a tie for the final playoff. USP did just that, sweeping the doubles matches against Caldwell College and taking four of the six singles matches for the 7-2 win.

All three doubles matches were close contests. Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) defeated Oksana Manoukian and Brittani Frantellizzi 9-7 to win at number one doubles. At number two doubles, Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) defeated Joellen Keaney and Jacky Ross with an identical score of 9-7. Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.) rounded out the sweep with an 8-5 win over Danielle O’Connell and Laura Sinisgallo at number three doubles.

Moving on to singles competition, the Devils recorded wins at number two, three, five and six singles while the Cougars took matches at number one and four singles. Leonard needed three sets to defeat Emilie Skidmore, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 at number two flight while Sebastiani defeated Keaney 6-2, 6-4 at number three flight. Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) recorded a 6-4, 6-0 win over Patty Messick at number five flight and Perfetti was a three set winner, 6-4, 6-7 (10-8), 6-4 over O’Connell at number six flight.

The Devils concluded their northern road trip with a 9-0 win at Post University. The Devils swept all three doubles matches by identical scores of 8-0, before sweeping all six singles matches in two sets.

Bedway and Leonard defeated Kim Haig and Bethany Everett at number one doubles while Sebastiani and Torrone defeated Jessica Sevcik and Bethany Everett at number two doubles. Perfetti and Garber completed the doubles sweep, defeating Krystle Shuska and Caitlin McKeon-Nicholls.

In singles competition, Bedway defeated Haig, 6-0, 6-1 at number one singles. At number two singles, Leonard defeated Martinez 6-0, 6-0. Sebastiani defeated Everett at number three singles, 6-0, 6-0 while Torrone defeated Sevcik at number four singles by an identical 6-0, 6-0 score. Exler and Perfetti also won their singles matches by the same 6-0, 6-0 score, with Exler defeating McKeon-Nicholls at number five singles and Perfetti defeating Shuska at number six singles.

As a tune-up for the upcoming CACC Championships this weekend, the Devils will take on LaSalle University on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at LaSalle starting at 4:00 p.m. USP will then participate in the CACC Championships.

Lions Snap Devils Win Streak (10/6/06)

The Lions of Georgian Court University handed the Devils of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia an 8-0 loss in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's tennis matchup in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon.

The loss snaps the Devils two game win streak and drops USP's record to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Georgian Court evens their record at 5-5 overall and moves to 4-2 in conference matches.

The Devils all three doubles matches to start off the afternoon, including two hard fought contests that went to tiebreakers. Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) lost to Dunja Dunda and Alexa Wilkinson 8-9 (5-7) at number one doubles while Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) dropped their number two doubles match 8-9 (2-7) to Autumn Florez and Melissa Gaffney. Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.) lost to Corrine Stinemire and Kimmie Helk 8-4 at number three doubles to complete the sweep of the doubles matches by Georgian Court.

Five of the six singles matches were played before darkness set in. Bedway dropped a tough contest at number one singles to Dunda 4-6, 5-7 while Sebastiani lost to Stinemire 6-7 (4-7), 3-6 at number three singles. At number two singles, GCU's Wilkinson defeated Leonard 6-1, 6-2. Gaffney defeated Torrone, 8-1 at number four singles and Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) was defeated by Florez 3-6, 4-6 to round out the matches and complete the shutout.

The Devils will take to the road this weekend as they conclude their conference schedule with matches at Caldwell College on Sunday, October 8, 2006 and Post University on Monday, October 9, 2006.

Women's Tennis Earns Second Straight Win (10/4/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team won their second straight match yesterday afternoon with an 8-1 triumph over host Eastern University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

USP improves to 2-5 with the win. Eastern falls to 2-7.

The Devils started things off by sweeping all three doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) shutout Marie Shrefler and Jessica Bryan, 8-0 at number two doubles for the Devils' first point of the match. Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.) earned an 8-5 win at number three doubles defeating Hannah Tobin and Naomi Sasso. Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) had the closest doubles match of the afternoon, defeating Mandy Kulken and Molly Sullivan, 8-6 at number one doubles to complete the doubles sweep. Bedway and Leonard improved to 5-2 on the season as a doubles team.

In singles competition, Bedway continued her dominance over opponents this season, defeating Kulken, 8-1 at number one singles and upping her season record to 6-1. Leonard defeated Shrefler, 8-6 at number two singles while Sebastiani was an 8-2 winner at number three singles over Tobin.

Torrone and Perfetti rounded out the Devils singles winners on the afternoon. Perfetti was an 8-3 winner over Jenn Tuomisto at number six singles while Torrone defeated Sullivan 9-8 (7-4) at number four singles. Eastern's lone point came at number five singles where Bryan defeated Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.), 8-4.

The women's tennis team returns home to face Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Georgian Court University on Thursday, October 5, 2006. The match is slated to start at 3:00 p.m.

Devils Shut Out Goldey Beacom for First Win of Season (9/27/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team earned their first win of the 2006 season this afternoon, defeating Goldey Beacom College, 9-0.

The win was also their first conference win of the season and improves the Devils record to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

The Devils started the match with a 2-0 lead as the Lightning's sixth player was sidelined with an injury, leading to default wins at number three doubles and number six singles.

Starting off play with the doubles teams, the Devils took both number one and number two doubles, recording 8-0 shutouts in both matches. Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) defeated Stephanie Bain and Ashley Thomas at number one doubles and Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) defeated Berline Duperoy and Kate Lewis at number two doubles.

Bedway continued her strong play at number one singles, defeating Bain 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 5-1 on the season. At number two singles, Leonard defeated Thomas 8-1. At number three singles, Sebastiani defeated Duperoy, 8-0. Torrone defeated Lewis 8-1 at number four singles and Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) defeated Courtney Amig, 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles to complete the sweep.

The women's tennis team will take to the road when they travel north to take on Post University in a rescheduled match on Sunday, October 1, 2006.

Golden Rams Hand Devils Their Fifth Straight Defeat (9/22/06)

The West Chester University Golden Rams handed the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team their fifth straight defeat yesterday, recording a 6-3 victory.

USP now falls to 0-5 overall. West Chester improves to 3-2.

The Devils scored their first point on the afternoon in doubles competition as Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) defeated Maria Kostaris and Rose Conwell 8-4 at number one doubles. At number two doubles, Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) and Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) lost to Katie Edwards and Jennifer Litchman, 9-7. The Devils also dropped the number three doubles match as Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) lost to Katie Ditrani and Kristin Nothnagle, 8-3.

Bedway improved to 4-1 in singles competition with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kostaris at number one singles. Leonard recorded the Devils remaining point on the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Litchman at number two singles, improving her record to 2-2 on the season.

Sebastiani lost at number three singles, 6-2, 6-4 to Edwards. At number four singles, Conwell defeated Torrone, 6-0, 6-3. At number five singles, Ditrani defeated Perfetti 6-1, 6-2. Exler fell at number six singles 6-2, 6-1 to Jessica Toth.

The Devils are on the road again on Saturday, September 23, 2006 as they seek their first win of the season in a match at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Devils Struggle as Tiger Record a 9-0 Shutout (9/19/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team continued to struggle on the court as they dropped their fourth straight match, a 9-0 whitewash by Holy Family University.

The loss drops the Devils record to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.

The Tigers swept all three doubles matches to open the contest. Lauren Neill and Rupali Parekh defeated Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) at number one doubles 8-3. At number two doubles, Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) and Rachel Salahub (Sr., Cedar Crest HS/Allentown, Pa.) fell to Quena Borres and Shakir Willett, 8-2. Finally, Melanie Pulsinelli and Liana Lui defeated Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) 8-1 to complete the doubles sweep.

In singles play, Bedway dropped her first match of the season,as Neill recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win at number one flight. Leonard lost to Parekh, 6-3, 6-2 at the number two singles position while Exler was defeated by Borres 6-0, 6-1 at number three flight.

At number four flight, Willett dispatched Torrone 6-2, 6-0, followed by Lui winning number five flight 6-2, 6-0 over Perfetti. Pulsinelli finished off the sweep at number six singles 6-1, 6-0 over Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.).

Next up for USP will be a non-conference match at West Chester University on Thursday, September 21, 2006.

Clarion Hands Devils their Third Straight Loss (9/18/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team lost their third straight match yesterday as Clarion University concluded their eastern Pennsylvania swing by defeating the Devils,6-1.

The Golden Eagles started off by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead and handing USP's #1 doubles team of Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) their first loss of the season.

Bedway however remained perfect in singles competition, scoring the only point on the afternoon for the Devils with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lisa Baumgartner at #1 singles to improve to 3-0 on the season.

In the other singles matches, Amy Robertson defeated Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.), 6-1, 6-1 at #3 singles while Meg Robertson defeated Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.), 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles. Mary Loveless defeated Anna Garber (Sr., Colonia HS/Colonia, N.J.), 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles. With the match already decided at this point, the #2 singles and #5 singles matches were not played.

USP falls to 0-3 on the season. The Devils will be on the road this week as they travel to Holy Family University on Tuesday (9/19), West Chester University on Thursday (9/21) and Post University on Saturday (9/23).

Rams Defeat Devils in Home Opener (9/9/06)

Philadelphia University handed the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team their second loss of their young season today, defeating the Devils 7-2 in their home opener.

The match was also the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener for both teams. The Devils fall to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) continued her solid play, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Katie Stracquintino at #1 singles. Bedway also teamed up with Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) to earn USP's only other point of the match, an 8-4 #1 doubles victory over Maddie Smith and Trish Ubil.

Leonard dropped her #2 singles match to Ubil, 2-6, 1-6 while Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) lost at #3 singles 7-5, 3-6, 0-1(2-10) to Beka Elliot. Lori Pick defeated Tara Torrone (Sr., Red Bank Catholic/Lincroft, N.J.) at #4 singles 6-0, 6-1. Pick and Elliot also combined to defeat Torrone and Sebastiani 8-2 at #2 doubles.

In the remaining matches, Christina Kettle defeated Gabrielle Exler (So., Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) 6-3, 6-0 at #5 singles and Amanda Brennan defeated Danielle Perfetti (Fr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) 6-3, 6-1 at #6 singles. Exler and Perfetti also lost at #3 doubles, falling 4-8 to Stracquintino and Brennan.

The Devils will take to the courts again on Thursday, September 14, 2006 when they meet Neumann College. The match is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

Devils Open Season with Loss to Arcadia (9/8/06)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team opened up their 2006 campaign on the road against Arcadia University, dropping a 5-4 decision to Knights.

The Devils recorded wins in three of the six singles matches but got just one win in the three doubles contests to account for their four points.

Amanda Bedway (Jr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cory Mazen at the number one singles spot. USP also recorded wins at #2 and #3 singles with Sarah Leonard (So., West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) defeating Brittany McCall at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-0 and Christina Sebastiani (So., Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) earning a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sarah Palmer at #3 singles.

Bedway and Leonard also teamed up to record the Devils lone win at doubles, an 8-0 whitewash of Mazen and Palmer at #1 doubles.

Next up for the Devils will be their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference test as USP will host Philadelphia University on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at noon.
