2009-10 season
Devils
Close out Season with Win over Cougars (10/11/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team closed out the fall portion
of their dual match season with a 5-1 win over Caldwell College Sunday
afternoon at the McNeil Field Courts in Philadelphia.
The win gives the
Devils a fall record of 4-7 overall and 4-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference games. Caldwell drops to 1-9 overall and 1-7 in league play.
USP's four conference wins is one more than they won during the 2008-09
season.
The Devils swept
two doubles matches to take an early 2-0 lead. Freshmen Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and
Nicole D'Ascenzo (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Morton, Pa.)
defeated Olga Ndhlovu and Danielle Levasseur 8-4 at the number one slot
while seniors Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton
Heights, Pa.) and Jeanine DePasquale (Hammonton
HS/Waterford, N.J.) defeated Sunmarie Allen and Kiera Tims,
8-3 at the number two slot. For both D'Ascenzo and DePasquale it was their
first collegiate victory in either singles or doubles. DePasquale joined
the team as a junior last season.
DePasquale went on
to win her singles match, defeating Tims, 8-4 at #4 singles. Durham was
an 8-4 winner of Ndhlovu at #1 singles, improving her record to 7-7 on
the season. Perfetti rounded out the Devils winners in singles, defeating
Levasseur 8-2 at the number two slot. Caldwell's lone point came at the
number three position with Allen recording an 8-1 win over D'Ascenzo.
The Devils will send
one singles player and one doubles team to the upcoming CACC individual
championship on Friday, October 16, 2009. Matches begin at 9:00 a.m. at
Chestnut Hill College.
Devils
Playoff Hopes End with Lightning Win (10/8/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s Tennis team saw they playoffs chances
fade away on Thursday as Goldey-Beacom College cruised past the Devils,
9-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play DelCastle Tennis Center
in Pine Creek, Delaware.
GBC (10-1, 6-1 CACC)
won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to claim all
nine points. The Devils drop to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in league play. USP
can now finish no better than fifth place as the season winds down, with
the top four teams qualifying for the CACC playoffs.
In doubles play,
GBC’s pair of Marina Sales and Blanca Sancho defeated freshman Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and
junior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.)
8-2 at the number one slot while senior Danielle Perfetti
(Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and junior Bridget
Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) lost to
Melanie Bonomo and Vanessa Velasquez, 8-2 at the #2 doubles. Luciana and
Daniela Pereira closed out doubles play with an 8-0 win over sophomores
Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.)
and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.)
at the number three slot.
In singles action,
Bonomo earned a win as the number one slot, defeating Durham 6-0, 6-3.
Sales defeated Frymoyer, 6-0, 6-1 win over Frymoyer at the number two
slot while Sancho blanked Hasan, 6-0, 6-0 at number three singles.
Perfetti was also
shutout at number four singles, losing to Velasquez, 6-0, 6-0. Luciana
Pereira then defeated Laney Jones 6-1, 6-2 at the number five slot and
Daniela Pereira earned a win at #6 singles when Choi retired trailing
5-7, 2-4.
The Devils will face
Caldwell College in their final match of the fall season on Saturday,
October 10, 2009. First serve is set for noon.

Eke Out Win over Lions (10/6/09)
Laney
Jones
won the tiebreaker in her singles match against Georgian Court University's
Alexus McClintic Tuesday afternoon at USP's McNeil Field Courts to give
the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team a 5-4
win over the Lions.
The win improves
the Devils record to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference matches. It also keeps alive the Devils playoff hopes as the
regular season winds down. USP has two matches remaining, both against
conference foes. (Goldey-Beacom college and Caldwell College).
The Devils won two
of the three doubles matches to take an early lead but the Lions took
three of the first five singles matches to even the match at 4-4 as Jones'
(Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.) #5
singles match was being played. Laney won the first set 6-3 but McClintic
came back to take the second set 6-3 to force the 10-point tiebreaker.
Jones held an early lead in the tiebreaker and made it stand to win 10-6
to take the contest, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) and give the Devils a 5-4 win
in the match. The win was Jones' third straight dual match singles victory.
Sophomore Juliet
Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.) and freshman Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) also
won their singles matches. Choi defeated Sarah Lockenmeyer in straight
sets 6-1, 6-2 while Durham won by default over Brittany Aimone at #1 singles.
Choi also teamed up with Jones to win their doubles match, defeating Lockenmeyer
and victoria Gaffney, 8-5 at #3 doubles. Durham and junior Zahra
Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) defeated Aimone
and Natalie Grieci 8-5 at the number one doubles slot for the Devils other
doubles win.
The Lions got a doubles
win at #2 doubles with McClintic and Caitlyn Lawrence defeating senior
Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.)
and junior Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington,
Pa.), 9-8 (7-4). Lawrence also won her singles match, defeating
Perfetti at #4 singles 6-3, 6-2. Gaffney was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Frymoyer
at #2 singles and Grieci was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Hasan at #3 singles
to round out the GCU winners for the match.
The Devils return
to action on Thursday, October 8, 2009 when they travel south to Wilmington,
Delaware to take on CACC rival Goldey Beacom College. First serve is set
for 3:30 p.m.
East
Stroudsburg Sweeps Devils (10/4/09)
Taking a break from
conference action, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's
tennis team hosted East Stroudsburg University Sunday for a non-conference
match at the McNeil Field Courts, losing to the Warriors 9-0.
The loss drops the
Devils record to 2-6. ESU improves to 2-2.
The first three matches
were the doubles competition with the Devils losing all three contests
to fall behind, 3-0 in the match. Freshman Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and
junior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.)
lost to Jamie Ferrigno and Katie D'Ambrosia at the number one slot, 8-3
while senior Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton
Heights, Pa.) and junior Bridget Frymoyer (Governor
Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) lost by the same 8-3 score
at the number two doubles position. Sophomore Juliet Choi
(Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.) and freshman Nicole
D'Ascenzo (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Morton, Pa.) lost at number
three doubles, 8-2 to Amy McGrath and Alex Santoro.
In singles, Durham
battled Amanda Kaufman at the number one singles position but lost in
straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. Frymoyer fell to D'Ambrosia, 6-1, 6-0 at the
number two singles spot and Hasan dropped her number three singles match
to Ferrigno, 6-0, 6-1. With the Warriors clinching the match by virtue
of winning the first three singles contests, the remaining contests were
played a s pro-set matches. Choi turned in a solid performance at the
number five singles slot, losing to Marisa Tanner 9-7 while Perfetti lost
to Santoro, 8-3 at #4 singles. Freshman Desiree Vassalotti
(Sacred Heart HS/Vineland, N.J.) rounded out the singles
matches with an 8-0 loss at the number six singles slot.
The Devils return
to action on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 when they host Georgian Court University
in a conference clash at the McNeil Field Courts. First serve is set for
3:00 p.m.
Devils
Earn Second Conference Win (10/3/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s tennis team earned their second conference
win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Chestnut Hill College
8-1 at the CHC tennis courts.
With the win, the
Devils improve to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference
(CACC) matches. Chestnut Hill drops to 1-10 overall and 1-4 in league
play. The win is the Devils ninth straight over the Griffins, dating back
to the 1999 season.
The Devil started
the match off by sweeping all three doubles contests. Freshman Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and
junior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.)
won their #1 doubles match, defeating Erin Anderson and Danielle Knott,
8-3. At #2 doubles, senior Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara
HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and junior Bridget
Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) also won
their match by the same 8-3 margin, defeating Karen Guwuriro and Kristin
Wasson. Sophomores Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee,
Pa.) and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New
City, N.Y.) rounded out the doubles winners with an 8-2
win over Aiesha Grierson and Regina Doherty at #3 doubles.
In the singles competition,
the Devils took five of the six singles contests to secure the match victory.
Choi won her #6 singles match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 over Nicole Fernandes.
Jones was a winner over Doherty at #5 singles, when Doherty retired with
an injury with Jones leading 6-1, 5-1.
Durham won her match
at #1 singles, defeating Anderson 6-0, 6-3 while Hasan was a 6-2, 6-1
winner over Wasson at #3 singles. Perfetti won her first singles match
of the season, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over Guwuriro to round out the Devils winners.
Chestnut Hill’s lone
point came at #2 singles where Knott defeated Frymoyer 6-3, 6-1.
The Devils return
to action on Sunday, October 4, 2009 when they host East Stroudsburg University
in a non-conference match at the McNeil field courts starting at noon.
Tigers
Edge Devils (10/1/09)
Holy Family University
captured four of the six singles matches to overcome an early deficit
to defeat the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis
team 5-4 Thursday afternoon at the McNeil field courts on USP's campus.
The loss drops the
Devils record to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
games. Holy Family improves to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league contests.
The Devils took an
early 2-1 lead, winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Danielle
Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and junior
Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.)
defeated Katie Cook and Linda Piecyk 8-5 at #2 doubles while sophomores
Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.)
and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.)
defeated Chelsea Brown and Nicole Dogas, 8-5 at #3 doubles. Holy Family's
lone doubles win came at the #1 slot where Jin Querubin and Melanie Pulsinelli
defeated freshman Sara Durham (Sacred
Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and junior Zahra Hasan
(Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) 8-4.
The Tigers took the
first the singles matches of the afternoon as Durham lost to Juliana Victoria,
6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles; Querubin defeated Frymoyer, 6-0, 6-2 at #2 singles
and Hasan lost to Pulsinelli, 6-1, 6-1 at #3 singles, giving the Tigers
a 4-2 lead. Jones and Choi won their matches at #5 and #6 singles respectively
to even the score at 4-4. Jones defeated Brown, 6-2, 6-3 while Choi rallied
from one set down to defeat Dogas, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. The Tigers closed out
the match by winning at the #4 singles slot. In that match, Perfetti won
the first set against Piecyk, 8-6 but dropped the second 6-4 forcing a
10-point tiebreaker as darkness approached. Piecyk won the tiebreaker
10-2 to take the match and give the Tigers a 5-4 win.
The Devils are on
the road for their next match, another CACC contest as they face Chestnut
Hill College on Saturday, October 3, 2009. USP then returns home for a
non-conference match against East Stroudsburg University on Sunday, October
4, 2009. The match is set to begin at noon.
Clippers
Sweep Devils (9/30/09)
Concordia College
handed the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team
their second shutout on Wednesday, defeating the Devils 9-0 in Bronxville,
New York.
The loss drops the
Devils to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
matches. The Clippers, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Division
II Women's Tennis National Championship in May, improve to 7-0 overall
and 6-0 in league play.
The Clippers swept
the first two doubles contests, as Christina Olivera and Ola Roberts defeated
freshman Sara Durham (Sacred Heart
HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and junior Bridget Frymoyer
(Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.), 8-0 at #1 singles
and junior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.)
and freshman Michelle Adamczyk (Nazareth Academy/Bensalem,
Pa.) lost their #2 doubles match by the same 8-0 score.
The #3 doubles match was the closest of all the contests as sophomores
Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.)
and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.)
lost to Adeline Brennan and Camilla Xavier 9-7.
Jones and Choi were
also the only two USP players to win more than one game in their respective
singles matches. Choi won five games in her 6-2, 6-3 loss to Maria Ortiz
at #5 singles while Jones won four in her #4 singles match, losing to
Brennan 6-2, 6-2. Adamczyk lost her #6 singles match to Xavier, 6-0, 6-1
and Frymoyer lost at #2 singles, dropping her match to Roberts 6-1, 6-0.
Durham (#1 singles) and Hasan (#3 singles) were swept in straight sets,
6-0, 6-0.
The Devils return
to action on Thursday, October 1, 2009 when they host Holy Family University.
The match is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
West
Chester Shuts Out Devils (9/26/09)
West Chester University
won all three doubles and six singles matches as they handed the University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia their third loss of the season, 9-0 Friday
afternoon at West Chester's South Campus Tennis Courts.
The Devils drop to
1-3 with the loss. West Chester improves to 5-1.
USP's #1 doubles
team of freshman Sara Durham (Sacred
Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and junior Bridget
Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) lost 8-3
to Brittany Counts and Allison Fetter. Senior Danielle Perfetti
(Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) and freshman Nicole
D'Ascenzo (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Morton, Pa.) also lost their
match at #3 doubles with and identical 8-3 score. For D'Ascenzo it was
her collegiate debut. Luisiana Souto and Kara Shumock defeated sophomores
Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.)
and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.)
and #2 doubles, 8-0.
In singles competition,
the Golden Rams swept all six matches in straight sets. Durham dropped
her match at#1 singles to counts, 6-3, 6-1 while Frymoyer lost at #2 singles,
6-1, 6-0 to Souto. Perfetti moved up to #3 singles and dropped her match
6-0, 6-1 to Fetter. Jones and Choi also lost in straight sets at #4 and
#5 singles respectively. Freshman Desiree Vassalotti (Sacred
Heart HS/Vineland, N.J.) did made her collegiate debut in
Friday's match at #6 singles but also lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1
to Teresa Grasso.
The Devils return
to action on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 when they travel north to Bronxville,
New York to take on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference newcomer Concordia
College at 3:00 p.m. The Clippers women's tennis team advanced to quarterfinals
of the NCAA national championship tournament in the spring.
Devils
Ground Eagles to Earn First Win of 2009 Season (9/22/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team swept through the doubles
competition and took five of the six singles matches as they earned their
first win of the season, defeating Post University, 8-1 on Tuesday in
their home opener at the McNeil Field Tennis Courts.
The Devils improve
to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference
matches. Post drops to 0-1.
The three doubles
teams started things off for the Devils. Sophomores Laney
Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.) and Juliet
Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.) won their match
at #3 doubles 8-0, defeating Helena Bartolomeo and Pamela Ifill. Senior
Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.)
and junior Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington,
Pa.) were 8-2 winners at #2 doubles, defeating Leah McQueeny
and Kelsey Jacovich. Freshman Sara Durham
(Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and junior Zahra
Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) rounded out
the doubles winners with an 8-2 win over Ashley Gorelick and Diana Hayden
at #1 doubles to give the Devils a 3-0 lead entering the singles competition.
Jones, Choi and Frymoyer
each earned straight set wins in their respective singles matches. Jones
defeated Bartolomeo, 6-0, 6-3 at #5 singles while Choi was a 6-2, 6-0
winner over Ifill at #6 singles. Frymoyer lost just one game in earning
a 6-0, 6-1 win over McQueeny at #2 singles. Durham overcame a shaky start
to her match at #1 singles and rebounded to defeat Gorelick , 0-6, 7-5,
1-0 (10-4). Hasan rounded out the Devils singles winners with a 6-2, 6-7
(7-9) 1-0 (10-5) win over Hayden at #3 singles.
USP returns to action
on Friday, September 25, 2009 when they travel to West Chester University
for a non conference match against the Golden Rams starting at 4:00 p.m.
Women's
Tennis Team Fares Well at ITA Regional Tournament (9/20/09)
It was a good two
days for the six members of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
women's tennis team competing at the ITA East Regional Tournament held
at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center in the East Falls
section of Philadelphia.
The Devils, all of
whom were competing in the "B" singles and doubles draws, came
away with their first wins ever in the tournament with freshman Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) leading
the way. Durham won two matches and advanced to the round of 16 before
losing a hard fought contest to Diane Kobasiuk of Dowling College 8-6
on Saturday.
Durham opened play
on Friday with a win over #6 seed Isobel Culaba of Concordia College,
8-2. She followed her Friday win with a win on Saturday over Jennifer
Zastrow of Southern New Hampshire University, 8-4, before dropping her
match in the round of 16.
Junior Bridget
Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) also won
her first match on Friday, defeating Caitlin Ortiz of Molloy College,
8-4. Frymoyer then dropped her round of 32 match to Camilla Xavier of
Concordia College 8-6. USP's doubles team of sophomores Laney
Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.) and Juliet
Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.) recorded the other
win of the tournament as the defeated Alex Bonventure and Angeline Asaro
of Molloy College 8-3 on Friday to advance to Saturday's round of 16.
Jones and Choi lost their round of 16 match to the team Valeria Couto-Cuervo
and Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood of Division I Bryant University, 8-0.
Senior Danielle
Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.), junior
Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.)
and Jones all lost their first round matches on Friday. The Devils other
two doubles teams; Durham and Hasan and Frymoyer and Perfetti both received
byes into the round of 32 but dropped their respective matches on Friday.
The Devils return
to action on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 for their home opener against
Post University at the McNeill field Tennis Courts starting at 3:00 p.m.
USP
Defeated by Division I LaSalle (9/14/09)
Freshman
Sara Durham won her first collegiate singles match on Monday
against La Salle University's top singles player, however the University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team dropped the match,
losing 6-1 to the Explorers at the La Salle tennis courts.
The loss drops the
Devils record to 0-2. La Salle improves to 1-0.
Durham
(Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) playing at #1 singles
for the Devils, took on La Salle's Courtney Babo, defeating the sophomore
in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 for the Devils lone point of the match. USP's
#3 doubles team of sophomores Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee,
Pa.) and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New
City, N.Y.) also won their match, defeating Babo and Allison
Amrein, 9-8 (11-9), but the Explorers took two of the three doubles matches
to earn the doubles point in the Division I seven-point scoring format.
The Devils #1 doubles
team also took the match into a tiebreaker but with the opposite result
of USP's #3 doubles triumph. Durham teamed up with junior Zahra
Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) and took on
Tonya Rice and Pearl Wilkins, losing to the LaSalle duo 9-8 (10-5). Junior
Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.)
and senior Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights,
Pa.) dropped their #2 doubles match, 8-3 to Christina Gomez
and Kiara Smith.
In other singles
matches, Hasan split sets with Gomez at #2 singles, winning the first
set 6-3 and losing the second 6-1 before dropping the tiebreaker 10-5.
Jones lost to Amrein at #5 singles 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) while Frymoyer lost
to Smith at #3 singles 6-1, 6-3. Perfetti (#4 singles) and Choi (#3 singles)
also lost their respective matches in straight sets.
The Devils will compete
at the ITA East Regional Championships starting on Friday, September 18,
2009 at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center in Philadelphia.
Devils
Drop Season Opener to Rams (9/12/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team kicked off their 2009-10
campaign Saturday afternoon, losing to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
rival Philadelphia University, 8-1 at the Abraham J. Salaman Courts on
the Rams campus.
The Devils lone win
came in singles competition as sophomore Juliet Choi (Clarkstown
North HS/New City, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut a memorable
one, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Laura Beaver at #6 singles. Another
USP player making her collegiate debut was freshman Sara
Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.). Durham started
her career playing in the #1 singles slot and took the Rams top player,
Daniela Rodriguez to three sets, losing the first 6-2 and winning the
second set 6-1 before dropping the third and final set 6-3.
Durham also teamed
with junior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.)
at #1 doubles, losing to Rodriguez and Stephanie Reinke 8-2. The Rams
also swept the remaining two doubles matches, with Christin Brzozowski
and Brittany Villa scoring an 8-3 win over junior Bridget
Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) and senior
Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.)
at #2 doubles and Stephanie Miller and Sarah Harris defeating Choi and
sophomore Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.),
8-2 at #3 doubles.
In singles, Hasan
lost to Brzozowski, 6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles while Frymoyer dropped her
#3 singles match to Reinke , by the same 6-3, 6-2 score. Perfetti lost
