Women’s Tennis Team Awarded CACC Team Sportsmanship Award
Philadelphia, Pa. (October 18, 2008) - The University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s tennis was awarded the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) Team Sportsmanship Award on Saturday at the conclusion
of the CACC Individual Tennis Tournament at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
The CACC Team Sportsmanship Award is given to the team in each sponsored conference sport that best exemplifies the spirit of athletic competition and sportsmanship. The eight head women’s tennis coaches in the league vote on the award.
USP’s selection marks the third consecutive year that the women’s tennis team has been named as the recipient of the conference’s team sportsmanship award, having earned the honor in 2006 and 2007. Women’s tennis and women’s cross-country are now the only two USP athletic teams to have won this award three times.
The 2008 USP women’s tennis team finished their fall season with an overall record of 4-5 and a 3-4 record in CACC matches. The Devils finished in fifth place amongst the eight conference teams.
In the CACC Individual Tournament, the Devils had two singles players and one doubles team competing. Senior Christina Sebastiani (Paulsboro HS/Sewell, N.J.) faced the tournament’s top seed, Luisiana Souto of Goldey Beacom in her opening match, losing to the Goldey Beacom sophomore 7-5, 4-6, 0-1 (5-10). USP sophomore Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) also lost her first round match, falling to Queena Borres of Holy Family, 10-2 via pro-set scoring.
In doubles, Hasan and Sebastiani teamed up to defeat Chestnut Hill’s Erin Anderson and Cara Wallin, 8-2 to advance to the semi-final round. Hasan and Sebastiani then lost to Adriana and Daniela Rodriguez of Philadelphia University 8-2, to end their season.
