New Haven, Ct. – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia senior Shelby Rance has been named the 2006-07 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in an announcement made today by Commissioner Dan Mara. Both student-athletes will now be eligible for the NCAA Division II Commissioners Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Joining Rance as the CACC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year is Philadelphia University men’s baseball player Keith Heck.

“I would like to congratulate both Keith and Shelby for their academic and athletic achievements at Philadelphia University and USP,” said Mara. “They are both fine representatives of their respective institutions and we are proud to nominate them for the national award.”

Rance (Central Columbia Area High School/Bloomsburg, Pa.) , a two-sport athlete at USP, was a women’s basketball first team All-Conference selection this year, marking the third consecutive year that she earned first team honors. The senior guard has led the Devils to a 19-10 record and a third place finish in the CACC. Rance helped lead USP to two CACC Tournament Championships in 2004 and 2006, earning Tournament Most Valuable Player honors both times. Shelby earned CACC all-Tournament honors in each of her four seasons at a member of the USP women’s basketball team. She is the Devils’ all-time leading scorer with 1,939 career points and is ranked in the USP’s top 10 all-time in seven offensive categories while starting all 120 games of her career. Shelby led the Devils in scoring (16.4 ppg), 3-pointers made (47), free-throw percentage (.847) and steals (68) last season.

As a four year member of the USP women’s cross country team, Rance led the Devils to their first CACC title in 2005 while earning all-conference honors. Primarily USP’s #2 runner throughout her career, Rance competed in 30 races for the Devils including four CACC Championships and four NCAA East Regional Championships.

Carrying a 3.53 grade point average, the Bloomsburg, PA native was a member of the Dean’s List all eight semesters at USP, was a Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society Inductee in 2007 and a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She was named to the CACC Winter All-Academic team three times and was also a three-time selection in the fall. As a result of her work on the court and in the classroom this past season, she was honored as the Philadelphia Inquirer Women’s Basketball Area Academic Performer of the Year for the 2006-07 season.
