Bloomfield College banged out 29 hits in the two games against the
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s softball team Saturday
afternoon as they clinched a playoff spot by defeating the Devils

The two losses end the 2007 season for the Devils with a 14-23 overall
record and a 10-12 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
(CACC) games, narrowly missing one of the six playoff spots. USP’s

also an 11.5 game improvement over their 2006 squad that went 4-37.
Bloomfield improves to 20-16 overall and finishes the regular season
with a 14-8 CACC record.
Sarina Lavooy (Sr., Vernon Township HS/Sussex, N.J.) had three hits
in the second game and another in the first to finish the afternoon
with four hits in eight at-bats. The senior centerfielder closes out
her career with a nine-game hitting streak and finishes as the Devils
all-time leader in games played (146), at-bats (473), hits (165),
run scored (100) and stolen bases (47). Lavooy finished the season
batting .387, second best on the team. Sarina finishes her career
with a .349 career batting average.

home runs (21) and RBI (88) and closes out her career with a .416
career batting average.
Samantha Lavooy (Sr., Vernon Township HS/Sussex, N.J.), despite not
recording a hit on the afternoon, finishes her career with 127 hits,
second behind her sister Sarina. The senior outfielder/designated
hitter is also second on the Devils all-time list in games played
(145) and at-bats (421) and closed out her career with a .302 batting
average.
Laura Flint (Sr., Interlake HS/Duvall, Wash.) started and took the
loss in first game, giving up 12 runs on 14 hits while striking out
two and walking six. With the loss, Flint finished the season with
a 7-8 record, the most wins on the team and a 4.56 earned run average
(second on the team). With her two strikeouts, the senior pitcher
finishes her career as the Devils all-time strikeout leader with 256.
Flint also finished her career with 16 wins and a 3.96 earned run
average.
Also closing out their careers for the Devils were Ashley Schappell
(Sr., Parkland HS/ Schnecksville, Pa.), Kristina Kelly (Sr., G.A.M.P./
Philadelphia, Pa.) and Michelle Stringer (Sr., Cumberland Valley HS
(Pa.)/Cape Carteret, N.C.). Schappell this season played in 18 games
at both first base and pitcher. Ashley finished her career with 54
hits in 112 games played. Kelly appeared in 16 games this season.
The senior shortstop closed out her career with 103 games played and
had a career high 12 hits in 2006. Stringer, a catcher, appeared in

Back to the games, Bloomfield pounded seven home runs in the doubleheader
with Vicki Berardi and Mallory Mathews recording three dingers apiece.
Berardi drove in seven runs on the afternoon (four in the first game)
with six hits in nine at-bats, while Mathews drove in four (two each
game), hitting 5-for-7. Amanda Byrnes also homered in the first game
for the Deacons.
Byrnes led off the first game with a home run to left field that
cleared the secondary fence some 15 feet beyond the McNeil field fence.
An infield error led to the second Bloomfield run. Berardi and Mathews
homered to lead of the third inning as the Deacons put up four runs
in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
USP got two back in the bottom of the fourth as Brittany Ebersole
(So., Cumberland Valley HS/Camp Hill, Pa.) doubled to left field to
start the inning. Ashlee Trupp (So., Daniel Boone HS/Birdsboro, Pa.)
replaced her on the base paths and later scored on an infield error
that allowed Brittany Brown (Fr., Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.) to reach
second base. Trimble then delivered a two-out single to score Brown
to make the score 6-2.
Mathews’ second home run of the game in the top of the sixth made
the score 7-2 before the Devils struck again in the bottom of the
sixth. Bethanne Bossert (Fr., St. Hubert’s HS/Philadelphia, Pa.) singled
down the left field line to start the inning and came around to score
on Sarina Lavooy’s double who was also thrown out on the play trying
to reach third. Samantha Tu (Fr., Bensalem HS/Trevose, Pa.) then hit
her second double of the game and came around to score when Trimble
reached on a throwing error by Bloomfield’s pitch Erin Covell to make
the score 7-4.
Bloomfield struck for five more runs in the top of the seventh to
put the game out of reach. The big blow was Berardi’s three-run home
run to right center field. Bossert singled and Sarina Lavooy walked
in the Devils final at-bat but that was all the offense that USP could
generate as the Deacons prevailed 12-4.
The Devils struck first in the second game as Sarina Lavooy singled
and advanced to second on Trimble’s one-out single. Both players came
around to score on Carolynn Snavely’s (Jr., Prescott HS/ Prescott,
Ariz.) double and the Devils had a 2-0 lead.
Bloomfield tied the game with single runs in the second and third
and took the lead for the first time with three more in the fifth.
Berardi hit her third home run of the day with two out to make the
score 4-2 and Brianne Moore singled with the bases loaded to make
the score 5-2.
Mathews hit her third home run of the day in the sixth as the Deacons
piled on three more runs to take an 8-2 lead. Another run in the seventh
made the score 7-2 and the Devils were down to their final at-bat.
Sarina Lavooy singled and Trimble drew a one-out walk. Tu then delivered
a two-out single to left field to score both runners but that was
all as the Deacons completed the sweep with a 9-4 win.
Rachel Morgan (Fr., Clackamas HS/Clackamas, Ore.) took the loss to
finish the season with a 4-6 record. Morgan struck out five while
giving up nine runs (five earned) on 15 hits. The freshman pitcher
finished also finished the season with the lowest earned run average
on the Devils (4.53) and the best strikeout/7 in. mark (6.16).
Moore earned the win, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking
out nine.
For the 2007 season, the Devils as a team batted .308, their best
batting average since the 1998 season when they batted .321. USP also
cut their errors in half from last season and recorded the best fielding
average over the past ten seasons (.960).
USP

All nine players
in the batting order recorded at least one hit apiece as the University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball team belted a season-high
19 hits in their 10-4 non-league win over Chestnut Hill College Thursday
afternoon at McNeil Field.
The win improves
the Devils overall record to 14-21, their most wins since the 2000
season. Chestnut Hill falls to 9-16.
Ashley
Schappell (Sr., Parkland HS/ Schnecksville, Pa.),
Danielle Czajka (Jr., Garnet Valley HS/Glen
Mills, Pa.), Samantha Tu (Fr., Bensalem
HS/Trevose, Pa.) and Brittany Brown (Fr.,
Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.) had three hits apiece to
lead the Devils assault on the Griffins pitching with Czajka
driving in three runs. Bethanne Bossert (Fr., St. Hubert’s
HS/Philadelphia, Pa.) and Brittany Ebersole
(So., Cumberland Valley HS/Camp Hill, Pa.) had two hits
apiece with Bossert driving in a pair of
runs. Erin Degnan
(Fr., Gwynedd Mercy Academy, Doylestown, Pa.)
pitched a complete game for her second consecutive win, allowing four
runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out seven.
Jessica Day had
three of the hits eight hits against Degnan, including a solo home
run and an RBI single. Kim Paynter took the loss, allowing seven earned
runs while striking out one and walking none.
It was the Griffins
that struck first, scoring two times in their first at-bat as Julie
Treen reached on a two base infield error to score both Michelle Bauer
and Day and give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.
The Devils got
the runs back in the second inning as Ebersole
led off with a triple and scored on an error by the shortstop on the
throw back into the infield. Schappell and
Brown followed with singles with Schappell
scoring on Czajka's single to even the game
at 2-2.
Day launched
her solo home run over the left-centerfield fence in the top of the
third, putting Chestnut Hill ahead for the moment 3-2 until the Devils
struck for six runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-3 lead.
Tu singled to left to start the inning and
came around to score on Samantha Lavooy's (Sr., Vernon
Township HS/Sussex, N.J.) triple off the bottom of the
centerfield fence. Ebersole followed with
an RBI single and Schappell reached on an
infield error. Brown added a single to load
the bases with nobody out for Czajka, who
doubled into the centerfield gap to score two more runs and give the
Devils a 6-3 lead. Three batters later, Bossert
lined a single into left centerfield to score Czajka
and Brown and the Devils had an 8-3 lead.
USP added two
more runs in the fifth as Ashley Tobin (So., Warwick HS/Lititz,
Pa.) singled to start the inning and scored on Ashlee
Trupp's (So., Daniel Boone HS/Birdsboro, Pa.)
double. Trupp later scored on Tu's
single to left field. A great play by Bauer at shortstop snagging
a low line drive by Ebersole and turning
it into a double play saved the Griffins from any further damage.
Two walks in the top of the sixth and a single by Day scored the final
run of the day for Chestnut Hill as the Devils recorded a 1-2-3 inning
in the seventh with Degnan getting Laura
Barrett looking at a called third strike to end the game.
The Devils conclude
their regular season with a doubleheader at McNeil Field against Bloomfield
College on Saturday, April 28, 2007. The first game is set to begin
at noon.

Maggie Desmond
hit a two-run home run for the Rams. Kristin Giamatteo and Kelly Rauco
had two hits apiece. Stacy Bahr took the loss.
After giving
up the two-run home run to Desmond in the first inning, the Devils
bounced right back with three runs in the bottom of the first to retake
the lead 3-2. Sarina Lavooy walked to start
the inning and was sacrificed over to second by Tu.
A steal of third moved Lavooy closer to
scoring. Carolynn Snavely (Jr., Prescott HS/ Prescott,
Ariz.) walked to put runners on the corners before the
Devils strung together consecutive singles by Crotti,
Samantha Lavooy and Brittany
Ebersole (So., Cumberland Valley HS/Camp Hill, Pa.)
to put three runs onto the board.
USP added two
more runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Sarina Lavooy
tripled home Bethanne Bossert (Fr., St. Hubert’s HS/Philadelphia,
Pa.) with the first run and Tu
immediately followed with a double to score Lavooy
with the second run of the inning.
Flint gave up
just two hits over the next four innings as the Devils continued to
lead 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Tu
and Trimble led off the inning with singles
and Snavely hit into a fielder's choice
to replace Tu on the base paths. Crotti
and Samantha Lavooy followed with singles
to score Trimble and Snavely.
Lavooy later scored on Brown's
two out single to complete the scoring for USP.
The Rams got
two singles and walk to load the bases in the seventh before Lindsey
Field hit into a fielder's choice to score Lindsay White. Flint
then retired the next two batters to end the game.

a double. Desmond added three RBI to her game one total with a two-run
triple and an RBI single.
USP got their
lone run in the first inning as Trimble
delivered a two-out single and Snavely walked.
Samantha Lavooy then lofted a high fly
to the outfield which popped out of the left fielder's for a two-base
error, scoring Trimble and giving the Devils
a short-lived 1-0 lead as the Rams struck for two on Curtis' home
run in their next at-bat and the floodgates opened in the next two
innings with eight more runs to make the final score 10-1.
The Devils return
home for their final two doubleheaders of the regular season next
week, taking on Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, April 26th and
Bloomfield College on Saturday, April 28th. The Chestnut Hill doubleheader
will start at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday’s contest will start at noon.
Offense
Abounds as Devils Split with Chargers (4/21/07)
Twenty-three hits and nineteen runs. These were the numbers put
up by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s softball
team Saturday afternoon as they continue in their quest for a playoff
berth, splitting their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader
with Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York.
The Devils took the first game, 14-11 in eight innings. Dominican,
however, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning
to win the second game 6-5. With the split the Devils are now 12-20
overall and 9-9 in league play. Dominican is 15-15 overall and 7-7

difference in the opener. Lavooy finished
the game with three hits and three walks while scoring three times
and driving in two runs. Annie Abbate (Fr., St. John Villa
Academy/ Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Carolynn Snavely
(Jr., Prescott HS/ Prescott, Ariz.) also had three hits

four RBI. Stathes took the loss in relief for the Chargers, pitching
the final three innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits while walking
three.
Snavely’s sacrifice fly in the first inning
gave the Devils a 1-0 lead but the Chargers came back with two runs
in the bottom of the first, another in the second and two more in
the third to take a 5-1 lead. Terpstra and Stathes hit back-to-back
homers in the third to account for the Chargers two runs in the inning.
The Devils offense came to life in the fifth inning as they sent
10 batters to the plate to score five runs and take a 6-5 lead. The
Devils had only two hits in the inning but took advantage of five
walks and a hit batter issued by the Dominican pitchers. Brittany
Brown (Fr., Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.) had one of those
two hits, leading off the inning with a single to left field. Ashlee
Trupp (So., Daniel Boone HS/Birdsboro, Pa.) came in
to run for Brown and promptly stole second.
Mia Crotti (Fr., Valley View HS/Jessup, Pa.)
walked and Bethanne Bossert (Fr., St. Hubert’s HS/Philadelphia,
Pa.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Devils
then pulled off a rare triple steal with Trupp
scoring and Crotti and Bossert
advancing into scoring position. A walk to Lavooy
loaded the bases again. Walks to Abbate
and Trimble brought home two more runs to
make the score 5-4. Snavely then singled
in another run to tie the game at 5-5 and the Devils again had the
bases loaded with nobody out. Ebersole walked
to bring in the go-ahead run before the Chargers completed two force
plays at home and picked off a USP runner to get out of the inning.
Dominican tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth as Flint
issued three consecutive walks to produce a run. USP made it 10-6
with four more runs in the sixth inning. USP opened the inning with
consecutive singles by Crotti, Bossert, Lavooy and
Abbate produced the seventh USP run. After Trimble
reached on a fielder’s choice, Snavely singled
to drive home Abbate and Lavooy.
Ebersole then reached on a fielder’s choice
to score Trimble and make the score 10-6.
Ollari hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to pull
the Chargers within one 10-9 before the Devils went backup by two
on a bases-loaded walk to Trimble. Two errors
in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Chargers to tie the game
and send it into extra innings.
Kristina Kelly (Sr., G.A.M.P./ Philadelphia, Pa. )
walked to lead off the eighth and Crotti
reached on a fielder’s choice. Bossert had
an infield single to load the bases for Lavooy,
who doubled to left field, clearing the bases and giving the Devils
a 14-11 lead. Flint got the first two outs
in the bottom of the eighth inning before allowing a single by Danielle
Garrison. Flint then struck out Melanie
Hesterman to end the game and give USP the win.
Dominican trailed 5-2 in the nightcap before rallying to score four
runs in the bottom of the seventh to pullout the victory 6-5. Lauren
Galladay hit a home run for the Chargers as Laurie Edwards picked
up the win in relief.
After getting three hits in the opener, Abbate
hit the first home run of her college career in the nightcap, a three-run
blast over the centerfield fence in the second inning. Samantha
Lavooy (Sr., Vernon Township HS/Sussex, N.J.) had two
hits for the Devils as part of an eight hit attack. Rachel
Morgan (Fr., Clackamas HS/Clackamas, Ore.) took the
loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and striking out
four.
Abbate’s blast was part of a four run second
inning that saw the Devils bat around. Samantha Lavooy
singled to start the inning and later scored on a wild
pitch. A walk to Samantha Tu (Fr., Bensalem HS/Trevose,
Pa.) and a single by Sarina Lavooy
brought up Abbate who cleared the bases
with her blast to center field, giving the Devils a 4-0 lead.
Galladay led off the fourth inning with a home run to pull the Chargers
within three, 4-1. USP got the run back in the fifth on an RBI single
by Bossert. The Chargers made the score
5-2 as Galladay drew a bases loaded walk.
The score remained 5-2 until the seventh . Two singles and an error
loaded the bases for Ollari who singled to drive in the third run.
Another walk to Galladay made the score 5-4 and a walk to Michelle
Krupna tied the game at 5-5. After getting the first out on an infield
pop out, Stathes then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field scoring
Ollari with the winning run.
The Devils return home for their final three doubleheaders of the
regular season next week, taking on Philadelphia University on Tuesday,
April 24, 2007, Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, April 26th and

a three-run outburst in the inning that left the Devils with a five-run
lead 6-1. Morgan
(Fr., Clackamas HS/ Clackamas, Ore.)
earned the win, evening her record at 4-4. The freshman pitcher allowed
just three hits, one unearned run while striking out nine batters.
USP had only five hits in the game with Sarina Lavooy
getting two of them.
After sending
nine batters to the plate and manufacturing three runs on just one
hit in the second inning, the Devils held a 3-0 lead. Nyack took advantage
of an infield error by the Devils to plate a run in the fourth inning
to make the score 3-1.
Leading 3-1 in
the fifth inning, Sarina Lavooy singled
to start the inning. After Samantha
Tu (Fr., Bensalem HS/Trevose, Pa.)
popped out, Trimble took an 0-2 pitch from
losing pitcher Lauren Merkley and put it over the centerfield fence
for a two-run home run, her third of the season to make the score
5-1. The Devils were not finished as Snavely
followed Trimble's dinger with a single
and Brittany
Brown (Fr., Cherokee HS/ Marlton, N.J.)
doubled to put two runners in scoring position for Samantha
Lavooy. Lavooy flied out to
deep left field as Snavely tagged and scored
on the play to make the score 6-1.
Nyack threatened
in the top of the sixth, getting a walk to Thompson and a single to
Palentchar to start the inning. Another walk with two outs loaded
the bases but Brynne Hennessy hit a ground to third baseman Laura
Hamilton (So., Cardinal O'Hara/ Havertown, Pa.)
who stepped on the third base bag for the force out as the Warriors
left the bases loaded. Nyack finished the game leaving 11 runners
stranded on the base paths. A one-out walk in the seventh was all
the offense the Warriors could muster in their final at-bat as Morgan
