Morgan Named CACC Softball Pitcher of the Week
Phillips also Named to Conference Honor Roll

New Haven- Conn. (4/20/09) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia softball pitcher Rachel Morgan (Clackamas High School/Clackamas, Ore.) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for her performance during the week ending April 19, 2009.

In earning CACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time this season, Morgan tossed her first career no-hitter as the Devils defeated Felician College 3-0. Rachel went 3-0 on the week in leading the Devils to a perfect 4-0 week.

Morgan allowed only one earned run in 15 1/3 innings of work for a 0.46 ERA. Rachel struck out 21 batters, allowed just six hits in her three appearances and did not walk a single batter.

Highlighting the perfect week for Morgan was the no-hitter. This was the first ever no-hitter thrown at USP’s McNeil Field and just the third in the history of the softball program. Rachel allowed just three base runners on an infield error, a passed ball and a hit batter in the first two innings. The hit batter in the second was caught stealing and Morgan then retired the next 16 Felician batters to complete the no-hitter, finishing the game with 11 strikeouts and no walks, and facing just two batters above the minimum. Morgan improved her record to 6-10 with the win.

The former Clackamas High School pitcher earned her third win of the week in the second game of the doubleheader against Felician, pitching 3 1/3 innings of relief and allowing one earned run as the Devils won 11-6. Morgan retired the first five Felician batters she faced running her streak to 21 straight batters retired before the Golden Falcons finally got a hit off the right handed hurler. With the win, her record is now at 7-10.

Morgan opened the week pitching a two-hit complete game with eight strikeouts as the Devils defeated Chestnut Hill College 12-1.

Morgan is a pharmaceutical marketing/management major at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and will graduate in May 2009. Rachel is in her third season as a member of the USP softball team.

Joining Morgan in receiving conference recognition this week is center fielder Dayna Phillips (Cumberland Regional High School/Rosenhayn, N.J.). Phillips was named to the CACC honor roll for her performance this week. The Devils’ leadoff hitter had 12 hits in 16 at bats for a .750 batting average. Dayna scored six runs, drove in three and had three stolen bases.

Phillips led off each of USP’s four games with a hit and had at least two hits in every game. She was a perfect 5-for-5 when leading off an inning and batted 4-for-5 (.800) with runners in scoring position. Dayna capped off her week with a career-high four hits in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader with Felician.

The former Cumberland Regional High School athlete is in her second season as a member of the USP softball team. Phillips is a Pre-Med/Biology major at the institution.
