Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic
All-Area Men’s At-Large Team
Philadelphia (April 20, 2008) – University of Sciences in Philadelphia junior Alex Novin has been named to the 2007-08 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large Team. Novin is one of 10 student-athletes selected to the Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large Team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions in the Philadelphia-metropolitan area.
Novin (Washington Township HS/Sewell, N.J.) is a double major, pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree as well as a degree in Pharmacology/ Toxicology at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Alex currently has a 3.594 overall grade point average. Novin, a fourth year student at USP, recently completed his third season of competition for the Devils. Alex finished the season with a smallbore average of 494.00 and an air rifle average of 501.70 while competing in ten events for the Devils and was the second leading prone shooter on the team (185 avg.). Novin is a repeat selection on the Area All-Academic Team, earning the honor in 2006-07.
The Sewell, N.J. native is a three-time College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All Academic Rifle All-American selection in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Novin has been named to USP’s Dean’s List six times. He is a three-year member of USP’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee and was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society as a freshman.
Novin is joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large team by wrestler Ryan Hluschak, Drexel University (Performer of the Year); three-time selection gymnast Andrew Corp from Temple University; two time honorees Penn fencer Ben Wieder Temple gymnasts John Vogtman, Sterling Kramer and Jason Russo. Haverford’s Dan Arnstein (fencing) and Evan Steigel (squash) along with Penn’s Lee Rosen (squash) are first-timers on the Academic All-Area Team.
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia has had 18 student-athletes named to the Philadelphia Area All-Academic Teams since the programs inception in 2005-06. Nine athletes are repeat selections with five earning Performer of the Year honors in their respective sports. USP also has one athlete who has earned Performer of the Year honors twice, Michelle Bauer (women’s at-large- rifle, 2006 and 2008) and two who have been named to the team three consecutive years (Bauer and Joy Aifuwa (women’s cross country)).
