Philadelphia (April 20, 2008) – University of Sciences in Philadelphia senior Michelle Bauer has been named the 2007-08 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large Performer of the Year. Bauer is one of 10 student-athletes selected to the Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large Team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions in the Philadelphia-metropolitan area.
Bauer (Triton Regional HS/Blackwood, NJ), a pharmacy major on a doctorate tract, recently became the first USP student-athlete to qualify for an individual NCAA championship event, earning a spot in the 2008 NCAA Rifle Championships in smallbore and air rifle. Bauer ended this season ranking sixth in air rifle and seventh in smallbore in the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference.
Michelle is a four-time All-MAC selection in both events, having posted career-best scores of 587 (small bore) and 586 (air rifle) out of 600 this season.
Carrying a 3.60 grade point average, the Blackwood, NJ native earned her second Academic All-Area Performer of the Year honor (she was selected in 2006) and is an At-Large Team member for the third year in a row. Bauer has received multiple academic honors, including four College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All Academic Rifle All-America selections, a second-team spot on the 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District At-Large team and Dean’s List all seven semesters. During her secondary education, Bauer has trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado and was crowned National Sub-Junior Champion in 2000 after having been a seven-time Junior Olympics participant.
Bauer is joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large team by Katy Black and Stephanie Burkhardt of West Chester, Emma Buckingham of Haverford, Carolyn Fauteux of Neumann, Nina Gernes of Temple, Briana Morrissey of Ursinus and Penn’s Christina Matthias, Marissa Rosen and Sydney Scott.
