Fall to Army, Duquesne in NCAA Qualifier (2/13/04)
After a solid performance
at last weekend's sectionals, the USP coed rifle team entered this weekend's
NCAA qualifier against nationally ranked Army and Duquesne with optimism.
The Devils performed well against their formidable opponents, but lost
in smallbore to Army 4624-4327 and Duquesne 4535-4327.
In air rifle, the Devils
shot their highest score in the last three years, 1463, but lost to both
teams 1547-1463 (Army) and 1493-1463 (Duquesne).
"This ends three
weeks in a row that we fired a full course and air rifle," said Head
Coach Paul Klimitas. "This is something the USP Rifle
Team has never done. Competing three consecutive weekends in that course
of fire could take its toll on a shooter, however we can be really pleased
on how we performed in all of our matches."
Lori Nell
(Sr., Absegami HS/Cologne, NJ) fired a career full course
high of 1099 in smallbore. "Lori, once again stepped up big time,
" adds Klimitas. "She also had solid
support from the team." Nell's teammates,
Glenn Raymond (So., Manchester Memorial HS/Manchester, NH);
Michael Colletti (So., Holy Trinity HS/Massapequa, NY) and
Sharon Moravec (Sr., North Penn HS/Lansdale, PA) all finished
within 29 points of Nell's score.
Raymond
finished the afternoon with a score of 1085 while Colletti
had a score of 1073. Moravec rounded out the
Devils top four with a score of 1070.
Nell
also recorded a career high in air rifle with a score of 378. Raymond
finished eight points behind her with a score of 370. Moravec
and Colletti rounded out the top four with scores
of 361 and 354 respectively.
"We are right where
we should be and are positioned perfectly for the upcoming MAC Championships
in Cambridge, MA during spring break," adds Klimitas.
"Everyone is looking forward to the event."
Devils
Impressive at Sectionals (2/9/04)
USP's coed rifle team
played host to four schools over the weekend as the N.R.A. Collegiate
Sectionals took place at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range. The hosts
put on an impressive performance, earning small bore wins against all
four schools and air rifle wins against SUNY Maritime and John Jay (the
only two schools besides USP that competed in air rifle), thus completing
an undefeated weekend.
The Devils had a full-course
smallbore score of 4338, besting Loyola University, Md. (4148), SUNY Maritime
(2592), John Jay College (3630) and Princeton University (3590). In air

to love Nell's performance," said Head
Coach Paul Klimitas. "As of a week ago she was flat
on her back in the hospital. Lori's effort was
one of the most courageous performance under physical duress that I have
seen in a while. She always comes to play no matter what cards she is
dealt."
Rounding out the top
four was Michael Colletti(So., Holy Trinity HS/Massapequa,
NY). Colletti had a score of 1,063.
(387 prone; 325 standing; and 351 kneeling).

Rifle
Team Returns to Earn Two Wins (1/19/04)
The
Varsity Rifle team, coming off a two month break recorded two wins within
24 hours. In a rare Friday night match the Devils posted their best smallbore
score of the year as they beat Valley Forge Military College 2175-1877.
Then in a Saturday morning contest, the shooters came right back to beat
Loyola (MD) 2146-1977. Both the matches were at home.
The Valley Forge
match featured Glenn Raymond (So., Manchester Memorial HS/Manchester,
NH) shooting a career high of 560. Raymond’s
560 was capped off by a 99 kneel score. The squad’s season best also featured
Mike Colletti’s (So., Holy Trinity HS/Massapequa, NY)
541, Sharon Moravec’s (Sr., North Penn HS/Lansdale, PA)
540, and Lori Nell’s (Sr., Absegami HS/Cologne, NJ)
534.
On Saturday morning Raymond once again led the
team with a 550. Rounding out the scoring was Colletti
(535), Nell (533), and Moravec
(528). Brian Gottshall (Fr., Spring-Ford HS/Royersford, PA)
fired scores of 410 and 437 on Friday and Saturday respectively while
Brittany Marchant (Fr., Annville-Cleona HS/Annville, PA)
recorded marks of 411 and 433. Also on Saturday, Brooke Foreman
(Sr., Walton Central HS/Walton, NY) shot a 497 and Jason
Powers (So, Bishop Guertin HS/Pelham, NH) fired a 438 in
his first appearance of the season.
“You have to be pleased
when you’re not training for two months and come out of the box firing
a team high,” adds Head Rifle Coach Paul Klimitas.
“I’ve seen this before where a shooter comes back from break fresh and
rested and posts a big score. I was actually a little happier with the
second day than the first, even though the team’s score was lower because
our score on the second day was solid and followed a night match. You
have to be mentally tough to shoot back to back matches at this level.
It was just like the old days of the 70’s and 80’s when we fired back
to back matches on a routine basis. “
Coach K
also adds, “The team is exactly where I want them to be at this time.
We have positioned ourselves to make a strong bid for the Sectionals,
NCAA Qualifier, and the MAC Championships. I’ve got a good group of shooters-
no glitter, no glitz, no complaining, no image- they just execute the
game plan.”
The two wins improved the varsity
rifle team’s smallbore record to 10-3
