Devils Capture MAC Air Rifle Title (3/14/03)

The USP Coed Rifle Team finally concluded their season last week when the results of the delayed Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Air Rifle Championship were announced. Competing in the Expert Division and firing against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Devils captured their second consecutive air title, 1453-1442.

With a flood disrupted the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC)Air Rifle Championships earlier this month, the USP Rifle team along with all the other air rifle competitors, were forced to shoot their air rifle at a later date in their respective home range. The Devils did just that, prior to spring break, and despite a campus-wide power outage on March 7th, completed their task.

Leading the way for the Devils was co-captain Allison Zima (Manhein Township HS/Lancaster, PA). Zima, a senior fired cards of 94, 95, 92 and 95 for a career high 376. Freshman Glenn Raymond (Memorial HS/Manchester, NH) was right behind her, with cards of 93, 91, 95, and 94 for a total score of 373, also a career high.

Sharon Moravec (North Penn High School (PA)/Davidsonville, MD) finished her season with a score of 362 (91, 91, 92, 88) while co-captain Lee Ann Wilkinson (Norwalk HS/Norwalk, CT) concluded her career at USP with a score of 342 (85, 86, 90, 81).

For the Devils, it was their second consecutive MAC air rifle title, having captured the Sharpshooter Division title last season. "This was a great way for our two captains (Allison and Lee Ann) to conclude their career," adds Head coach Paul Klimitas. "The two of them have shown their leadership all season and an MAC title could not be a more fitting way for them to finish"

Devils Survive Flood but Lose to M.I.T. at M.A.C. Championships (3/2/03)

One for the books - that was one way to describe the events of yesterday at the M.A.C. Rifle Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Championships were interrupted early in the morning by a flood in Navy's air rifle range prior to the Devils taking the line to shoot. Six hours later the Devils finally shot their smallbore relay, looking to defend their MAC Sharpshooter Division title. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) had other plans though as they defeated the Devils 2150-2092 to capture the title.

High shooter for the Devils was junior Lori Nell (Absegami HS/Cologne, NJ). Nell fired cards of 94 and 93 in prone; 88 and 92 standing and 88 and 91 kneeling for a total score of 546 - a new career high!

Just behind Nell was freshman Glenn Raymond (Memorial HS/Manchester, NH). Raymond fired a pair of 92's at prone; a pair of 77's standing and cards of 86 and 93 kneeling for a total score of 517. Co-Captains Alison Zima (Manhein Township HS/Lancaster, PA) and Lee Ann Wilkinson (Norwalk HS/Norwalk, CT) were right behind Raymond with scores of 515 and 514 respectively.

Zima fired a pair of 91's prone; 83 and 76 standing and 85 and 89 kneeling. Wilkinson had cards of 93 and 96 prone; 85 and 69 stand; and 90 and 81 kneeling.

Back to the flood - The flood started when a shooter misfired into the ceiling, taking out a sprinkler along the way. The ensuing rush of water, 1500 gallons caused several thousand dollars worth and damage and forced a long delay while the range and much of the equipment inside had to be decontaminated. The end result was that air rifle was postponed and will be shot on a mutually agreeable date at various schools home ranges with the targets being sent into the statistical people.

As the Devils prepare to move to NCAA competition next season, Nell and Sharon Moravec (North Penn High School (PA)/Davidsonville, MD) will be team captains for the 2003-2004 season.

Devils Defeat Trinity in Non-League Action (2/3/03)

In a rare Sunday match, the Devils hosted Trinity College yesterday coming away victorious 2130-1656 in a smallbore showdown.

The match was a true 'suicide match', with four USP shooters going shoulder-to-shoulder against four shooters from Trinity. Starting off in the prone position, the Devils four shooters turned in a strong showing, leaving an 11 point spread between their high and low shooters. When the final shot was fired, the spread was only 15 points between the Devils high and low shooters.

Taking the day was Lee Ann Wilkinson (Sr., Microbiology, Norwalk, CT). Lee Ann shot a score of 538 (98, 97 prone; 79, 81 stand; and 90, 93 kneel). Close behind her was Glenn Raymond (Fr. PharmD., Manchester, NH) with a 535 (91, 93 prone; 88, 82 stand and 94, 87 kneel). Raymond just beat out Allison Zima (Sr., Biology, Lancaster, PA) who fired a 534 (97, 96 prone; 90, 84 stand and 85, 82 kneel). Sharon Moravec (Jr., Biology, Lansdale, PA) brought up the rear in this match with a 523 (98, 96 prone; 79, 85 stand; and 81, 84 kneel). Considering that Moravec fired a full course on Saturday for sectionals, her 523 score was not too bad!

The Devils improve to 14-4 overall in smallbore. USP will conclude their sectionals competition next weekend (2/8).

Devils Defeat Valley Forge in Return to Action(1/25/03)

Rifle Team Posts 19th Consecutive Opening Match Win  (9/23/02)

1983. That was the last time that a USP rifle squad lost their season opening match. The Devils made it 19 straight years with an opening day win on Saturday as they defeated Valley Forge Military College 1984-1551 in a non-league MAC smallbore match in Wayne, PA.

Having lost seniors Kevin Bisch, Monica Labb and Kelly Pence, this year's rifle squad will still feature seasoned veterans like Lee Ann Wilkinson (Sr., Microbiology, Norwalk, CT), Allison Zima (Sr., Biology, Lancaster, PA) and Sharon Moravec (Jr., Biology, Lansdale, PA) as well as some promising newcomers.

It was one of these newcomers that turned out to be the Devils top shooter on the day. Glenn Raymond (Fr., PharmD., Manchester, NH) in his first varsity match, led the Devils with a score of 540 (out of a possible 600). Raymond fired cards of 97 and 96 from the prone position, 84 and 82 standing and 92 and 89 kneeling. "To my knowledge, Glenn becomes only the third shooter in school history to be 'top gun' in their first varsity match, "said Head Coach Paul Klimitas. (Kevin Gale and Chris Hazuda were the other two).

With three experienced seniors on last year's squad, Raymond, a second year PharmD. student, was red-shirted by coach Klimitas for his freshman year. "Red-shirting Glenn turned out to be a good idea," adds Klimitas. "Having him (Glenn) compete last year with seniors Kevin (Bisch), Monica (Labb) and Kelly (Pence) on the team would have been waste of a season. With the seniors' departure, Glenn can step right in and contribute for us."

Wilkinson was the second high shooter for the Devils, firing cards of 94 and 93 prone, 71 and 74 standing and 86 and 81 kneeling for a total score of 499. Zima was right behind her with a score of 490 (94, 91 prone, 80, 71 stand, 76, 78 kneel).

Rounding out the Devils' top four was Lori Nell (Jr., PharmD., Cologne, NJ). Nell recorded a score of 455 (87, 82 prone; 73, 72 stand; 63, 78 kneel). The Devils fifth shooter on the day was newcomer Brooke Foreman (Jr., Pharm/Tox, Walton, NY). Foreman scored a respectable 390 in her first varsity match.
