Crimson Hawks Defeat Devils (11/14/09)

Indiana University of Pennsylvania recorded their second win in as many weeks against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's rifle team on Saturday, defeating the Devils 4026-3857 at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range in Philadelphia.

The loss drops the Devils overall record to 1-11. In Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference contests, the USP women are now 1-9 in smallbore and 1-7 in air rifle.

Two of the Devils four declared scorers recorded career high's in air rifle as the Devils broke the 2000-point mark for the first time this season, finishing with a score of 2016 on the air rifle side. Junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.) shot 539 (91, 90, 92, 91, 86, 89) while freshman Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.) shot 499 (88, 80, 87, 80, 84, 80). Senior Elisha Shumard (Toms River North HS/Toms River, N.J.) and junior Carrie Hightman (Middletown HS/Middletown, Md.) rounded out the Devils four air rifle scorers, shooting 513 (92, 82, 81, 91, 85, 82) and 465 (82, 80, 74, 73, 77, 79) respectively.

In smallbore it was Hightman who recorded a career high, shooting 447 (82, 85 prone; 65, 65 stand; 70, 80 kneel). Shumard led the Devils with a season high 503 (94, 94 prone; 70, 73 stand; 87, 85 kneel). Churchill and freshman Olivia Brown (Wilson HS/Sinking Spring, Pa.) rounded out the Devils top four scorers with marks of 468 (91, 88 prone; 80, 84 stand; 56, 69 kneel) and 423 (85, 79 prone; 67, 58 stand; 71, 63 kneel).

Saturday's match also marked the collegiate debut of fourth-year student Alexandria Dinapoli-Marzano (St. Joseph's by the Sea HS/Staten Island, N.Y.). Allie shot 465 (74, 78, 69, 84, 79, 81) in air rifle. Sophomore Carrie Kwok (Herricks HS/New Hyde Park, N.Y.) followed up her career-high air rifle performance of last week by bettering her 480 score of last week with a mark of 487 (86, 78, 80, 75, 86, 82).

Josh Steiner led IUP with a smallbore score of 507. George Yauneridge followed with a 498 score. Julie Vavreck was the top air rifle shooter for IUP with a score of 527 followed by Steiner's 518. Kyle Pruitt had a 501 air rifle mark and Yauneridge rounded out the top four scorers with a score of 500.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 21, 2009 when they host John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range. The match, USP's last of the fall season is set to start at 10:00 a.m.

Devils Drop Contests at Akron (11/7/09)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's rifle team competed last Saturday at the Akron Rifle Invitational in Akron, Ohio, facing teams from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Mid-Atlantic Rifle conference foe and host University of Akron. The Devils score of 3681 however was not enough to earn a win on the weekend.

The women's team suffered three losses, falling to Akron 4554-3681; Rose-Hulman, 4401- 3681 and to IUP, 3941-3681. Their record now stands at 1-10 overall. In MAC contests, the USP women are 1-8 in smallbore and 1-6 in air rifle.

The women were led in both guns by junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.). Churchill shot 471 (88, 88 prone; 73, 76 stand; 64, 82 kneel) in smallbore and 511 (79, 84, 87, 89, 85, 87) in air rifle. In smallbore freshman Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.) followed with a score of 427 (89, 91 prone; 60, 56 stand; 61, 70 kneel). Kulp also had a career-high 466 (73, 81, 79, 82, 73, 78) in air rifle.

Junior Carrie Hightman (Middletown HS/Middletown, Md.) had the Devils second best score in air rifle, shooting 486 (81, 79, 81, 84, 78, 83). Hightman also shot 424 (77, 83 prone; 69, 68 stand; 65, 62 kneel) in smallbore. Sophomore Carrie Kwok (Herricks HS/New Hyde Park, N.Y.) rounded out the Devils four air rifle scorers, shooting a career-high 480 (72, 80, 81, 83, 82, 82). Freshman Olivia Brown (Wilson HS/Sinking Spring, Pa.) rounded out USP's smallbore scorers, shooting 416 (85, 78, 54, 62, 67, 70).

The Devils recorded a team smallbore score of 1738 and a team air rifle score of 1943.

Zac Szabo led the Zips in smallbore with a 567 score while Rebecca Gerevics was their top shooter in air rifle with a score of 582. Rose-Hulman was led by Lucas Weir in smallbore with a score of 559 and Edward Mayhew in air rifle, who shot 571. IUP was led by Julie Vavrick in both guns, shooting 514 in smallbore and 506 in air rifle.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 14, 2009 when they host Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range on USP's campus. The match is slated to start at 11:00 a.m.

Shumard Leads Devils to First Win of Season (10/31/09)

Senior Elisha Shumard shot a season-high smallbore score of 500 as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's rifle team earned their first overall win of the season, an 1850-1735 triumph over Loyola college (Maryland) at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range on Saturday.

The win improves the Devils overall record to 1-7 overall. The Devils are also 1-7 in Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Smallbore matches.

Shumard's (Toms River North HS/Toms River, N.J.) season high score was one of several strong performances by the women's team on Saturday. Elisha turned in cards of 91, 91 prone; 74, 77 stand and 84, 83 kneel en route to her score of 500. A pair of freshman shooters also turned in career high totals to support the Devils team score. Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.) recorded a score of 444 (90, 95 prone; 50, 59 stand; 69, 81 kneel) while Olivia Brown (Wilson HS/Sinking Spring, Pa.) had a score of 434 (91, 81 prone; 63, 62 stand; 59, 78, kneel). Junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.) rounded out the Devils four declared scorers, shooting 472 (88, 88 prone; 73, 71 stand; 71, 81 kneel). Churchill's score was just four points shy of her season best and six shy of her career best.

A third USP shooter also turned in a career-high score on Saturday as sophomore Carrie Kwok (Herricks HS/New Hyde Park, N.Y.) shot 406 (85, 75 prone; 52, 57 stand; 62, 75 kneel), better her previous best mark by 28 points.

Josh Downey led Loyola with a score of 459, follwed by Brendan Canale's 439. Justin Barden and Gabby Sussman rounded out the Greyhounds four scorers with marks of 419 and 418 respectively.

USP's Mixed Rifle Team returns to action on Saturday, November 7, 2009 when the visit the University of Akron. The Zips are led by 2009 NCAA Air Rifle National Champion Jenna Compton.

USP Women's Rifle Team Swept by Virginia Military Institute (10/24/09)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's rifle team were swept by the three Virginia Military Institute rifle teams, losing to the Keydet men, mixed and women's squads Saturday in Lexington, Virginia.

While the Devils did suffer three overall losses, the women's team did earn an MAC Air rifle victory, out-pointing the VMI women, 1950-1892. Overall, the VMI men defeated the Devils, 4177-3689, the mixed team 4048-3689 and the VMI women won 3764-3689. The losses drop the Devils overall record to 0-7. In Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) matches, the USP women are 1-5 in air rifle and 0-7 in smallbore.

Senior Elisha Shumard (Toms River North HS/Toms River, N.J.) led the Devils in both guns, shooting 488 (89, 87 prone: 80, 77 stand; 79, 76 kneel) in smallbore and a season best 523 (85, 89, 85, 89, 86, 89) in air rifle. Junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.) was the second high scorer for the Devils shooting 461 (90, 87 prone; 61, 60 stand; 88, 75 kneel) in smallbore and 493 (83, 77, 85, 84, 83, 81). Rounding out the Devils four scorers were junior Carrie Hightman (Middletown HS/Middletown, Md.) and freshman Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.). Hightman shot 407 (75, 67 prone; 60, 68 stand; 69, 68 kneel) in smallbore and 479 (78, 82, 86, 75, 84, 74) in air rifle. Kulp shot 383 (92, 89, prone; 56, 58 stand; 48, 40 kneel) in smallbore and 455 (80, 76, 74, 70, 82, 73) in air rifle.

Freshman Olivia Brown (Wilson HS/Sinking Spring, Pa.) also made her collegiate debut on Saturday shooting smallbore only and recording a score of 418 (79, 84 prone; 73, 65 stand; 60, 57 kneel).

Jason Morgan led the VMI men in smallbore with a score of 523 while Quentin Sweetser led the VMI mixed team with a score of 520. The VMI women were led by Jennifer Cook's smallbore score of 504.

USP is home for their next match, hosting Loyola College (Maryland) on Saturday, October 31, 2009 starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range.

Women’s Rifle Team Drops Match to Princeton (10/10/09)

Princeton University’s Olympic duo of Abigail and Sandra Fong proved to be a formidable foe as the Tigers defeated the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women’s rifle team 2092-1831 Saturday in their home opener at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range in Philadelphia.

USP drops to 0-4 with the loss.

The Fong sisters led the Tigers and all shooters with Sandra shooting 582 and Abigail 580.

Junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.) and senior Elisha Shumard (Toms River North HS/Toms River, N.J.) led the women’s team with both shooters scoring 482. Churchill’s 482 (88, 90 prone; 72, 73 stand; 81, 78 kneel) score was a career high. Shumard’s 482 (97, 91 prone; 79, 63 stand; 79, 77 kneel) is a season-high as Saturday’s match was her first of the season.

Junior Carrie Hightman (Middletown HS/Middletown, Md.) and freshman Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.) rounded out the Devils’ scorers in the match. Hightman shot 444 (82; 81 prone: 68, 67 stand; 72, 74 kneel) while Kulp shot 423 82, 87 prone; 59, 61 stand; 75, 59 kneel).

Princeton’s Ying-Xue Li shot 537 and Kathleen Morris shot 393 to give the Tigers their 2092 score. In achieving their high scores of the match, Sandra Fong had two perfect prone cards, while her sister Abigail had a perfect first prone card and shot 99 out of 100 on the second.

The Devils do not compete again until they shoot at Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, October 24, 2009.

Navy Sinks Devils at MAC Invitational (10/4/09)

Returning to action for day two of the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's rifle team lost at the hands of their hosts, the United State Naval Academy 4627-3350.

The loss drops the Devils record to 0-3. USP was outshot, 2292-1616 in smallbore and 2335-1934 in air rifle.

In smallbore, junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.) led the way for the Devils, shooting 476 (87, 88 prone; 76, 69 stand; 79, 77 kneel). Junior Carrie Hightman (Middletown HS/Middletown, Md.) followed with a score of 408 (76, 82 prone; 61, 74 stand; 54, 61 kneel). Freshman Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.) and junior Carrie Kwok (Herricks HS/New Hyde Park, N.Y.) rounded out the Devils top four scorers. Kulp shot 377 (87, 90 prone; 50, 42 stand; 40, 68 kneel) while Kwok shot 355 (75, 73 prone; 28, 35 stand; 70, 74 kneel).

On the air rifle side, Hightman led the Devils shooting a score of 516 (86, 88, 80, 89, 87, 86). Churchill was right behind her with a score of 510 (84, 86, 91, 80 86, 83). Kwok and Kulp rounded out the Devils four scorers. Kwok shot a career-high 456 (77, 78, 69, 79, 73, 80) while Kulp shot 452 (77, 74, 79, 77, 82, 63).

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 10, 2009 when they host Princeton University. The Tigers have a pair of Olympians competing on the team, sisters Abigail and Sandra Fong. The match is set to start at 11:00 a.m.

Women's Rifle Loses Season Opener (10/3/09)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's rifle team opened their 2009-2010 season Saturday, competing at the Mid-Atlantic rifle Conference (MAC) Invitational hosted by the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The USP women dropped both contests, losing to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 4260-3491 and Massachusetts Maritime Academy 4192-3491.

The Devils shot 1643 for smallbore and 1848 for air rifle to combine for their 3491 score.

Leading the way for the Devils in both guns was junior Nicole Churchill (Pocono Mountain West HS/ Albrightsville, Pa.). Churchill shot 474 in smallbore (90, 88 prone; 63, 82 stand; 75, 76 kneel) and 507 in air rifle (75, 82, 90, 84, 89, 87). Making her collegiate debut for the Devils and finishing as the Devils second high scorer for the day was Shaina Kulp (Elizabethtown HS/Manheim, Pa.). Kulp, a second-year student, shot 425 (87, 82 prone; 60, 56 stand; 65 75 kneel) in smallbore and 464 (67, 79, 78, 81, 74, 85) in air rifle.

Rounding out the Devils top four scorers in both guns were juniors Carrie Hightman (Middletown HS/Middletown, Md.) and Carrie Kwok (Herricks HS/New Hyde Park, N.Y.) . Hightman shot 372 (66, 69 prone; 58, 62 stand; 60, 57 kneel) in smallbore and 441 (66, 66, 83, 80, 67, 79) in air rifle rifle. Kwok, making her smallbore collegiate debut, shot 372 (70,79 prone; 61, 31 stand; 64, 67 kneel) and 436 (70, 75, 65, 73, 74, 79) in air rifle. Kwok's air rifle score was a career-high.

The Devils return to action on Sunday for Day 2 of the MAC Invitational, where they will face host Navy.
