Back on Track with Win over IUP (11/14/09)
Senior Glen
Hirsh recorded a career high in smallbore as the University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team turned in their highest
score total to date to get back on the winning track with a 4457-4026
win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a Mid-Atlantic Rifle conference
match Saturday the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range in Philadelphia.
The win improves
the Devils overall record to 9-3. In MAC contests the Devils are 8-2 in
smallbore and 6-2 in air rifle.
Hirsh
(Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.)
shot 545 (94, 95 prone; 87, 82 stand; 94, 93 kneel) on the smallbore line,
bettering his previous career best of 540 set earlier this year and turning
in the third best smallbore score of the match. Hirsh's two teammates,
freshmen Ed
Ryznar (Maplewood HS/Titusville, Pa.)
and Brad Driscoll
(Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.)
had the top two scores in the match and led the way for the Devils. Ryznar
shot 573 (99, 98 prone; 93, 90 stand; 96, 97 kneel) in smallbore for the
top smallbore score of the match. Driscoll was one point behind Ryznar
with a score of 572 (96, 99 prone; 93, 94 stand; 95, 95 kneel). Senior
Courtney
Cavalieri (Highland HS/Highland,
N.Y.)
rounded out the Devils declared scorers, shooting 534 (91, 98 prone; 85,
83 stand; 91, 86 kneel). USP's team smallbore score was 2224.
Joining
Hirsh in recording a smallbore career high was senior Mark
Cifelli (Watchung Hills Regional HS/Gillette, N.J.) . Cifelli
shot 453 (93, 90 prone; 52, 65 stand; 76, 77 kneel).
In air rifle,
Ryznar and Driscoll again led the Devils and recorded the top two air
rifle scores in the match, shooting 577 (96, 94, 96, 95, 97, 99) and 575
(96, 92, 98, 95, 97, 97) respectively. Cavalieri added a score of 543
(90, 90, 92, 92, 90, 89) while Hirsh had a season-high 538 (89, 88, 90,
91, 89, 91). The Devils equaled their high air rifle mark of the season
with a team score of 2233.
Two shooters
also set career marks in air rifle. Freshman Timothy
Wu (Wilmington Charter School/Newark, Del.)
recorded a score of 490 (80, 74, 81, 86, 83, 86) while freshman Kyle
Leath (Conestoga Christian School/Denver, Pa.) shot 475
(80, 80, 74, 71, 87, 83).
Josh Steiner led
IUP with a smallbore score of 507. George Yauneridge followed with a 498
score. Julie Vavreck was the top air rifle shooter for IUP with a score
of 527 followed by Steiner's 518. Kyle Pruitt had a 501 air rifle mark
and Yauneridge rounded out the top four scorers with a score of 500.
The Devils return
to action on Saturday, November 21, 2009 when they host John Jay College
of Criminal Justice at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range. The match,
USP's last of the fall season is set to start at 10:00 a.m.

Defeat Devils(11/7/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team returned to action on Saturday,
facing one of the stronger teams in the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference,
the University of Akron along with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
and Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Akron Rifle Invitational
in Akron, Ohio. USP came away with one win in the three matches, defeating
IUP 4401-3941 but falling to the host Zips 4554-4401 and to Rose-Hulman
4447-4401.
USP's record now
stands at 8-3 overall. In MAC matches, the Devils are now 7-2 in smallbore
contests and 5-2 in air rifle.
Freshman Ed
Ryznar (Maplewood HS/Titusville, Pa.) led the
Devils in both guns, shooting 565 (95, 99 prone; 91, 93 stand; 94, 93
kneel) for smallbore and 582 (95, 97, 97, 98, 98, 97) for air rifle. Ryznar's
565 smallbore score was the second highest amongst the 38 shooters competing
behind only Akron's Zac Szabo who shot 567. recording a career-high mark
in air rifle, Ryznar's 582 tied him with Akron's Rebecca Gerevics for
high score, with Gerevics winning the tiebreaker via a higher score on
her last ten shots. Defending NCAA air rifle champion Jenna Compton from
Akron was two points behind Ryznar with a score of 580.
The Devils also placed
a second shooter amongst the top ten shooters in both guns; freshman Brad
Driscoll
(Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.).
Driscoll shot 556 (100, 99 prone; 82, 88 stand; 94, 93 kneel) in smallbore
and a career-high 576 (96, 92, 100, 95, 97, 96) in air rifle. Driscoll's
smallbore score was seventh best amongst the day's shooters while his
air rifle score was the fifth highest score behind only Ryznar (582);
Gerevics (582); Ryan Stein (Akron) (580); and Compton (580).
Rounding out the
Devils top four scorers were seniors Courtney
Cavalieri (Highland HS/Highland,
N.Y.) and Glen Hirsh (Cherokee
HS/Marlton, N.J.).
Cavalieri shot 538 (93, 96 prone; 87, 88 stand; 88, 86 kneel) in smallbore,
placing 18th amongst all smallbore shooters and 549 (92, 93, 92, 89, 92,
91) in air rifle, placing 20th. Hirsh shot 509 (90, 90, prone; 84, 72
stand; 84, 89 kneel) in smallbore, placing 23rd and 526 (92, 87, 85, 85,
85, 92) in air rifle, placing 25th.
For the match the
Devils recorded a smallbore team score of 2168 and an air rifle team score
of 2233, their highest air rifle team score of their season to date.
In addition to the
air rifle career highs from Ryznar and Driscoll, freshman Kyle
Leath (Conestoga Christian School/Denver, Pa.) also shot
a career high in air rifle, scoring 458 (69, 82, 83, 67, 76, 81).
Szabo led the Zips
in smallbore with a 567 score while Gerevics was their top shooter in
air rifle with a score of 582. Rose-Hulman was led by Lucas Weir in smallbore
with a score of 559 and Edward Mayhew in air rifle, who shot 571. IUP
was led by Julie Vavrick in both guns, shooting 514 in smallbore and 506
in air rifle.
The Devils return
to action on Saturday, November 14, 2009 when they host Indiana University
of Pennsylvania at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range on USP's campus.
The match is slated to start at 11:00 a.m.
Ryznar
Shoots Career High as Devils Defeat Loyola (10/31/09)
Freshman Ed
Ryznar shot a smallbore career high score of 580, leading
the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team to a
2236-1735 victory over Loyola College (Maryland) Saturday at the colonel
William Shea Rifle Range in Philadelphia.
The win
improves the Devils overall record to 7-1. USP also improves to 7-1
in Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) smallbore contests with the
win.
Ryznar's
(Maplewood HS/Titusville, Pa.) 580
score betters his previous smallbore career-best of 568 set earlier
this year at Navy. Ed shot cards of 98, 98 prone; 96, 96 stand
and 95, 97 kneel. Fellow freshman Brad Driscoll
(Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.) finished
with a score of 566 (98, 100 prone; 89, 92 stand; 94, 93 kneel).
Rounding out the Devils top four scorers were seniors Courtney Cavalieri (Highland
HS/Highland, N.Y.) and Glen
Hirsh (Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.).
Cavalieri shot 556 (95, 99 prone; 88, 91 stand; 92, 91 kneel),
one point shy of equaling her career high of 557 set last week
at VMI. Hirsh shot 534 (97, 97 prone; 82, 85 stand; 85, 88 kneel).
Freshman Timothy
Wu (Wilmington Charter School/Newark, Del.) also
turned in a career high smallbore performance, shooting 471 (85,
91 prone; 79, 62 stand; 69, 85 kneel).
Josh Downey
led Loyola with a score of 459, follwed by Brendan Canale's 439. Justin
Barden and Gabby Sussman rounded out the Greyhounds four scorers with
marks of 419 and 418 respectively.
USP's Mixed Rifle Team returns to action on Saturday, November 7, 2009
when the visit the University of Akron. The Zips are led by 2009 NCAA
Air Rifle National Champion Jenna Compton.
Shooters Sweep Keydets (10/25/09)
Freshmen Brad
Driscoll and Ed Ryznar and
senior Courtney
Cavalieri had
the top three scores of the day in both smallbore and air rifle as the
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle competed a sweep
against Virginia Military Institute's men's , mixed and women's rifle
teams in Lexington, Virginia on Saturday.
The Devils defeated
the VMI men, 4404-4177 and the VMI mixed team 4403-4048. USP also won
against the VMI women, 4403-3764. The three wins improve USP's overall
record to 6-1. In Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) matches, the
Devils are 6-1 in smallbore and 5-1 in air rifle.
Driscoll
(Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.) led all
scorers in smallbore, shooting 566 (99, 97 prone; 90, 90 stand; 95,
95 kneel). Three points behind Driscoll was Ryznar (Maplewood
HS/Titusville, Pa.) with a score of
563 (96, 99 prone; 90, 89 stand; 95, 94 kneel). Cavalieri
(Highland HS/Highland, N.Y.) followed
with a career-high 557 (95, 97 prone; 86, 93 stand; 91, 95 kneel),
breaking her mark of 555 set two weeks ago. Senior Glen
Hirsh (Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.) rounded
out the Devils scorers, shooting 517 (87, 94 prone; 83, 82 stand; 83,
88 kneel). USP had a smallbore team score of 2203.
Jason Morgan led the VMI men in smallbore with a score of 523 while
Quentin Sweetser led the VMI mixed team with a score of 520. The VMI
women were led by Jennifer Cook's smallbore score of 504.
In air rifle, Ryznar had the top score of the match, shooting 568 (91,
96, 92, 97, 95, 97) while Driscoll shot 565 (93, 91, 93, 96, 99, 93).
Cavalieri and Hirsh rounded out the Devils four scorers with scores of
548 (89, 95, 92, 89, 92, 91) and 519 (85, 88, 88, 81, 89, 88) respectively.
The four shooters gave the Devils a team score of 2200.
USP is home for their next match, hosting Loyola College (Maryland)
on Saturday, October 31, 2009 starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Colonel William
Shea Rifle Range.
Mixed
Rifle Team Defeats Princeton (10/10/09)
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team had all
four designated scorers shoot scores of 540 or better as they defeated
Princeton University 2224-2092 Saturday in their home opener at the Colonel
William Shea rifle Range in Philadelphia.
The win improves the Devils record to 3-1.
Freshmen Ed Ryznar (Maplewood HS/Titusville, Pa.)
and Brad Driscoll (Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.)
led the way for the Devils. Ryznar shot 568 (97, 99 prone; 89, 90 stand;
95, 98 kneel) while Driscoll shot 561 (99, 97 prone; 92, 90 stand; 92,
91 kneel). Senior Courtney Cavalieri (Highland HS/Highland,
N.Y.) added a season high 555 (97, 97 prone; 90, 91 stand;
90, 90 kneel) and senior Glen Hirsh (Cherokee HS/Marlton,
N.J.) shot a career-high 540 (94, 97 prone; 86, 81 stand;
89, 93 kneel) to round out the Devils scorers.
Olympians Sandra and Abigail Fong led the Tigers with scores of 582 and
580, the top two scores in the match. Sandra Fong had two perfect prone
cards, while her sister Abigail had a perfect first prone card and shot
99 out of 100 on the second. Ying-Xue Li shot 537 and Kathleen Morris
shot 393 to give the Tigers their 2092 score.
Making his rifle
team debut in Saturday’s match was Rob Rossi
(Interboro HS/Norwood, Pa.). Rossi, a third year student,
shot 414 (86, 83 prone; 60, 53 stand; 72, 60 kneel). Second-year students
Timothy Wu (Wilmington Charter School/Newark, Del.)
and Kyle Leath (Conestoga Christian School/Denver, Pa.) made
their smallbore debut against Princeton, having only shot air rifle last
weekend at Navy. Wu shot 453 (90, 91 prone; 55, 69 stand; 70, 78 kneel)
and Leath 445 (87, 86 prone; 75, 72 stand; 56, 69 kneel)
The Devils do not compete again until they shoot at Virginia Military
Institute on Saturday, October 24, 2009.
Midshipman
Defeat Devils at MAC Invitational (10/4/09)
Coming off their
two wins on Saturday at the MAC Invitational, the University of the Sciences
in Philadelphia mixed rifle team took on the host school, the United States
Naval Academy in day two of tournament, losing to the Midshipman 4627-4406.
The loss drops the
Devils record to 2-1. The Devils were outshot in smallbore 2292-2175 and
in air rifle 2335-2231.
Freshman Ed
Ryznar (Maplewood HS/Titusville, Pa.) led the way in smallbore,
shooting 568 (98, 98 prone; 96, 90 stand; 93, 93 kneel). Ryznar's score
with the sixth highest smallbore score amongst the day's shooters. Freshman
Brad Driscoll (Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.) followed
with a score of 545 (97, 100 prone; 82, 84 stand; 93, 89 kneel). Seniors
Courtney Cavalieri
(Highland HS/Highland, N.Y.) and Glen
Hirsh (Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.) rounded out the
Devils scorers. Cavalieri shot 539 (95, 91 prone; 84, 88 stand; 93, 88
kneel) while Hirsh shot 523 (97, 94 prone; 78, 85 stand, 82, 87 kneel).
On the air rifle
side, Driscoll led the Devils with a score of 573 (98, 92, 96, 99, 94,
94) while Ryznar shot 570 (94, 94, 96, 97, 95, 94). Driscoll's and Ryznar's
air rifle scores were the sixth and eighth highest totals respectively
amongst the day's air rifle shooters. Cavalieri and Hirsh again rounded
out the Devils top four scorers, with Cavalieri shooting 561 (90, 94,
98, 92, 93) and Hirsh shooting 527 (89, 90, 91, 86, 87, 84).
Making his collegiate
debut in the air rifle competition was Timothy Wu (Wilmington
Charter School/Newark, Del.) . Wu, a second year student,
shot 484 (76, 79, 85, 73, 87, 84). Freshman Kyle Leath (Conestoga
Christian School/Denver, Pa.) also improved upon his air
rifle debut score from Saturday, shooting a 437 (74, 78, 80, 72, 63, 70)
on Sunday.
The Devils return
to action on Saturday, October 10, 2009 when they host Princeton University.
The Tigers have a pair of Olympians competing on the team, sisters Abigail
and Sandra Fong. The match is set to start at 11:00 a.m.

Rifle Team Opens Season with a Pair of Wins (10/3/09)
The University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team kicked off their 2009-2010
campaign on the right path, earning wins over the United States Coast
Guard Academy and Massachusetts Maritime Academy at the first day of the
Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Invitational Tournament hosted by
the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The Devils finished
the day with a combined smallbore and air rifle score of 4413. Coast Guard
had a score of 4260 and Massachusetts Maritime had a score of 4192.
The match marked
the collegiate rifle debut of a pair of USP freshman, Brad
Driscoll (Alvirne HS/Hudson, N.H.) and Ed Ryznar
(Maplewood HS/Titusville, Pa.). Driscoll turned in a score
of 573 in smallbore (98, 99 prone; 91, 93 stand; 97, 95 kneel) while Ryznar
finished just four points behind him with a score of 567 (100, 98 prone;
92, 86 stand; 97, 94 kneel). Their scores were the highest debut scores
by a USP shooter since Michelle Bauer fired her first shots in the fall
of 2004. Driscoll's and Ryznar's smallbore scores were the second and
fourth highest of the day amongst the 59 smallbore shooters.
Rounding out the
Devils top four scorers in smallbore were seniors Courtney
Cavalieri (Highland HS/Highland,
N.Y.) and Glen Hirsh (Cherokee
HS/Marlton, N.J.). Cavalieri shot 547 (96, 92 prone;
86, 90 stand; 91, 92 kneel) while Hirsh shot 520 (92, 95 prone; 80, 81
stand; 82, 90 kneel). The team smallbore score was 2207.
In air rifle Ryznar
had a debut score of 574 (97, 96, 98, 99, 93, 91) while Driscoll fired
a 567 (95, 93, 96, 95, 92, 96). Cavalieri followed with a score of 549
(89, 90, 93, 93, 95, 89) and Hirsh rounded out the Devils scorers with
a score of 519 (88, 83, 84, 87, 89, 88). The Devils team score for air
rifle was 2206.
Also making his collegiate
debut for the mixed team was Kyle Leath (Conestoga Christian
School/Denver, Pa.). Leath, a second year student at USP,
shot 416 in air rifle ((63, 75, 65, 73, 64, 76).
The Devils will face
host Navy in the second day of competition at the MAC Invitational on
