Novin Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large Team

Philadelphia (May 3, 2009) – University of Sciences in Philadelphia senior Alex Novin has been named to the 2008-09 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large Team. Novin is one of 10 student-athletes selected to the Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large Team. The sports information offices of the 28 area institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area vote for the team.

Novin (Washington Township HS/Sewell, N.J.) is a fifth-year pharmacy major, pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology /Toxicology from USP in May 2008. Alex currently has a 3.434 overall grade point average. Novin recently completed his fourth season of competition for the Devils. Alex finished the season with a smallbore average of 509.50 and an air rifle average of 509.22 while competing in 12 events for the Devils. Novin's smallbore season high score of 529 came on November 8, 2008 against Akron. His air rifle season high was 526 against John Jay on November 22nd.

Novin is a repeat selection on the Area All-Academic Team, earning the honor in 2006-07 and 2007-08. He becomes the fifth USP student-athlete to be selected to an area all-academic team three times, joining former teammate Michelle Bauer, cross country runner Joy Aifuwa and tennis players Amanda Bedway and Tyler Weisel

The Sewell, N.J. native is a Four-time College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All Academic Rifle All-American selection in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Novin has been named to USP’s Dean’s List six times. He is a four-year member of USP’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee and was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society as a freshman.

Novin is joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s At-Large team by Temple University gymnasts John Russo (Performer of the Year) and Jon Vogtman; Haverford College squash player Evan Stiegle; Neumann ice hockey players Kyle Casey, Jesse Cole and Eric Stoyanovich; Haverford fencer Max Rosen-Long; Ursinus wrestler Chris Springer and Drexel wrestler Dave Woodall.

Student-athletes from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia have been named to the Philadelphia Area All-Academic Teams a total of 39 times since the programs inception in 2005-06. Ten-student athletes have been named to an area all academic team twice and five have earned the honor three times. Five USP student-athletes have also earned Performer of the Year honors in their respective sports, with two garnering the award twice (Bauer- women’s at-large (rifle) - 2006, 2008; and Bedway- women’s tennis - 2007 and 2008).
