Goess Named MAC Smallbore Rifle Shooter of the Month
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia senior Hannah Goess (Massapequa High School/Massapequa, N.Y.) has been named the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Smallbore Rifle Shooter of the month for the month of November 2008 as announced late last week by the MAC.
Goess is the second shooter from USP to earn an MAC Rifle Shooter of the Month award, joining sophomore Deborah Booth who was named MAC Air Rifle Shooter of the Month for October 2008. The award was created earlier this year and honors two shooters (one smallbore, one air) each month. The award is not necessarily based on the highest scores fired that month but to award outstanding performances (personal bests, recording scores well above season averages, gritty performances despite extraneous duress, etc), leadership, work ethic, classroom work and community service
The Massapequa, New York native is currently a fourth year Occupational Therapy major and has an overall g.p.a. of 3.29. Hannah’s three match smallbore rifle scores during November were 529 against Loyola College (Maryland) on November 1st; a season-high 542 against the University of Akron on November 8th and a score of 517 against John Jay College on November 22nd. Goess’ three match average was 529.33.
“Hannah has been one of most loyal and steady rifle shooters over the years,” comments USP Head Coach Paul Klimitas. “She is the team player, never complains, and is a pleasure to know and coach. I am always amazed at how student-athletes like Hannah can shoot on a varsity team, be an officer in the Omega Chi Psi Service Fraternity and Inter Greek Council, participate in sky diving, and still be on Dean’s List last semester. I would take 20 Hannahs if it were possible. Her leadership and consistency will be difficult to replace.”
The MAC is the largest rifle conference in the nation and currently consists of 15 members in eight states from Virginia to Massachusetts and west to Ohio. The MAC strives, through the practice of riflery, to promote the highest ethical standards of athletic competition and individual conduct, foster the development of mutual understanding and cooperation among its member institutions, and work to develop complete mutual understanding of the sport among all member institutions.
