Cavalieri and Booth Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large Team
Philadelphia (May 3, 2009) – University of Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team member Courtney Cavalieri and women’s rifle team member Deborah Booth have been named to the 2008-09 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large Team. The two shooters are amongst the 10 student-athletes selected to the Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large Team. The sports information offices of the 28 area institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area vote for the team.
Cavalieri (Highland High School/Highland, N.Y.), a fourth year student, is a pharmacy major, has a 3.362 overall grade point average and made Dean's List in the fall with a 3.550 GPA. Courtney shot a career-high 551 in smallbore at the NRA Collegiate Sectionals on February 7, 2009 and a season high air rifle score of 565 on the same day and later equaled it one week later at the NCAA Qualifier event at West Point. Cavalieri led the mixed team in both guns, finishing the season with an air rifle average of 554.55 and a smallbore average of 534.58 in her third season of competition for the Devils.
The Highland, N.Y. native is a three-time College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All Academic Rifle Team selection (2007, 2008, and 2009) and was most recently named to the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) All-Academic Team for 2009. Cavalieri was also the MAC Smallbore Shooter of the Month for February 2009. This is Courtney’s first ever Area Academic Team selection.
Booth (Watchung Hills Regional High School/Millington, N.J.), a second year pharmacy major, has a 3.637 overall g.p.a. Deborah finished her second season as a member of the Devils squad leading the women's team with a smallbore average of 513.09 and an air rifle average of 541.27, recording an air rifle career high of 566 on October 11, 2008 against the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a season-high smallbore score of 537 at the NCAA Qualifier at West Point on February 14.
The Millington, N.J. native has been selected to the CRCA All-Academic Team in each of the past two seasons and was most recently named to the inaugural MAC All-Academic Team for 2009. Booth is one of three shooters on the USP rifle teams that earned MAC Shooter the month, earning the first ever Air Rifle Award in November 2008. This is Deborah’s first ever Area Academic Team selection.
Cavalieri and Booth are joined on the 2008-09 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large team by fencer Emma Buckingham of Haverford College (Performer of the Year winner); Temple gymnasts Natasha Crawford and Danielle Viens; Ursinus gymnast Erin Slaunwhite; Penn squash players Christina Matthias and Sydney Scott; Neumann ice hockey player Jessica Schroeder and Swarthmore badminton player Kimberly Kramer.
Student-athletes from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia have been named to the Philadelphia Area All-Academic Teams a total of 39 times since the programs inception in 2005-06. Ten-student athletes have been named to an area all academic team twice and five have earned the honor three times. Five USP student-athletes have also earned Performer of the Year honors in their respective sports, with two garnering the award twice (Bauer- women’s at-large (rifle) - 2006, 2008; and Bedway- women’s tennis - 2007 and 2008).
