FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cavalieri Named MAC Smallbore Rifle Shooter of the Month
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia junior Courtney Cavalieri (Highland HS/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) has been named the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Smallbore Rifle Shooter of the month for the month of February 2009 as announced today by the conference.
Cavalieri becomes the third shooter from USP to earn an MAC Rifle Shooter of the Month Award, joining senior Hannah Goess (Smallbore, November 2008) and sophomore Deborah Booth (Air Rifle, October 2008). The award was created this year and honors two shooters (one smallbore, one air) each month. The award is not necessarily based on the highest scores fired that month but to award outstanding performances (personal bests, recording scores well above season averages, gritty performances despite extraneous duress, etc), leadership, work ethic, classroom work and community service
The Poughkeepsie, New York native is currently a fourth year student in the institution’s Doctor of Pharmacy program and has an overall g.p.a. of 3.362. Courtney had her three best smallbore rifle matches of the season in February. Cavalieri opened the month on February 1st at home with a score of 538 against Loyola College (Md.) and followed that up a week later at home with a score of 551 in the NRA Sectionals. Courtney’s final match of the month came at Army for the NCAA Qualifier where she produced a score of 539. Her three match average for the month was 542.67
Cavalieri has earned Dean’s List honors four times over the past seven semesters. Beyond the academics and rifle, Courtney is currently Speaker of the Senate in Student Government and a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. During her sophomore year she was co-editor of the Elixir (the University original prose and verse publication) and in her freshman year was a part of the Help Hopes and Humanity Project that saw her travel to Waveland Mississippi to volunteer their assistance in rebuilding the area after Hurricane Katrina during spring break.
The MAC is the largest rifle conference in the nation and currently consists of 15 members in eight states from Virginia to Massachusetts and west to Ohio. The MAC strives, through the practice of riflery, to promote the highest ethical standards of athletic competition and individual conduct, foster the development of mutual understanding and cooperation among its member institutions, and work to develop complete mutual understanding of the sport among all member institutions.
