Shooters Earn CRCA All-Academic Rifle Team Honors

Earns Award for the Fourth Straight Year
Five members of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia’s mixed rifle team and two members of the USP women’s rifle team were named to the 2009 College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Academic Rifle Team which was announced by the organization earlier this week.
USP mixed team members that earned CRCA honors this season were seniors Alex Novin (Washington Township High School/Sewell, NJ), Hannah Goess (Massapequa High School/Massapequa, N.Y.) and Raymond Janowski (Toms River North High School/Toms River, N.J.) along with juniors Courtney Cavalieri (Highland High School/ Highland, N.Y.) and Glen Hirsh (Cherokee High School/Marlton, N.J.) . Junior Elisha Shumard (Toms River North HS/Toms River, N.J.) and sophomore Deborah Booth (Watchung Hills Regional High School/Millington, N.J.) were the two members of the USP women's team that were recognized by the CRCA.
Novin becomes the second USP shooter to earn CRCA All-Academic honors in all four years of competition. Cavalieri, Shumard and Booth join Novin as repeat selections from last year, with Cavalieri receiving honors for the third straight season and Shumard and Booth a second straight year. Hirsh, Goess and Janowski are first time honorees.
To qualify for the CRCA All-Academic All-American Rifle Team, a shooter must have at least a 3.25 overall grade point average record or a 3.25 g.p.a. in the fall semester and record a score of at least 525 out of 600 in either smallbore or air rifle during the current season. The athlete’s coach must be a member of the CRCA.
Novin is a fifth-year pharmacy major, pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology /Toxicology from USP in May 2008. Alex currently has a 3.434 overall grade point average. Novin recently completed his fourth season of competition for the Devils. Alex finished the season with a smallbore average of 509.50 and an air rifle average of 509.22 while competing in 12 events for the Devils. Novin's smallbore season high score of 529 cam on November 8, 2008 against Akron. His air rifle season high was 526 against John Jay on November 22nd.
Cavalieri, a fourth year student, is also a pharmacy major and sports a 3.362 overall grade point average and made Dean's List in the Fall with a 3.550 GPA. Courtney shot a career-high 551 in smallbore at the NRA Collegiate Sectionals on February 7, 2009 and a season high air rifle score of 565 on the same day and later equaled it one week later at the NCAA Qualifier event at West Point. Cavalieri led the mixed team in both guns, finishing the season with an air rifle average of 554.55 and a smallbore average of 534.58 in her third season of competition for the Devils.
Booth and Shumard, both members of the USP women’s team, are two-time honorees this year. Booth, a second year pharmacy major, has a 3.637 overall g.p.a. Deborah finished her second season as a member of the Devils squad leading the women's team with a smallbore average of 513.09 and an air rifle average of 541.27, recording an air rifle career high of 566 on October 11, 2008 against the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a season-high smallbore score of 537 at the NCAA Qualifier at West Point on February 14. .Shumard, a fourth year physical therapy major, has a 3.561 overall g.p.a. Elisha finished the season with a smallbore average of 479.129 and an air rifle average of 503.60, shooting an air rifle season-high score of 527 at the NRA Sectionals at USP on February 7, 2009. Shumard just completed her third season of competition for USP.
Named to the CRCA All-Academic Team for the first time are USP mixed team members, Hirsh, Goess and Janowski. Hirsh, a fourth year microbiology major, recorded a 3.826 g.p.a.in the Fall semester earning Dean's List honors. Glen finished his fourth and final season as a member of the Devils mixed rifle team with a smallbore average of 511.83 and an air rifle average of 522.90. Hirsh recorded his season-high for air rifle at the NCAA Qualifier in February at West Point, firing a score of 537. His season-high in smallbore came at the MAC championships at VMI two weeks ago when he shot 532. Goess, a fourth year occupational therapy major, also completed her fourth and final season this year, closing out her career with a smallbore season average of 517.67 and and air rifle average of539.60, both second best on the team. Hannah recorded a 3.400 grade point average in the Fall semester and also earned Dean's List honors. She recorded her season-high air rifle score of 552 and NRA Sectionals at USP on February 7th and had a 542 score in smallbore against Akron on November 8th. Janowski, a fourth year biology major rounds out the USP honorees. Raymond recently completed his third season as a member of the USP mixed team, posting an overall grade point average of 3.728 and a semester gpa of 3.869 in the fall to earn Dean's List honors. Janowski recorded a season-high smallbore score of 530 at the NRA Sectional on February 7th and finished the season with a smallbore average of 492.73 and an air rifle average of 488.13.
"Seven is a nice number," adds USP Head Rifle Coach Paul Klimitas. "This is the most student-athletes we have ever placed on a CRCA All Academic Team. It is always nice to see our student-athletes earn awards like this."
