La Salle Defeats Devils (10/9/09)

La Salle University captured five of six singles matches and two of three doubles to record a 6-1 win over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team Thursday afternoon at La Salle's campus tennis courts.

The Devils drop to 0-2 on the season. The Explorers improve to 6-2.

In doubles competition, the Devils got their lone win at number two doubles as senior Ricardo Martins (Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Chris Lukose (Lassiter HS/Marietta, Ga.) defeated Trevor Donovan and Fernando Tovia, 8-4. however the Explorers won at number one doubles as George Gennaoui and Jon Maula defeated junior Francisco Garcia (Don Cesar Gascon/Balcarce Buenos Aires, Argentina) and sophomore Billy Fine (West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) 8-3 and at number three doubles with senior Dan Rubin (Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) and sophomore Roger Van Scyoc (Palmyra Area HS/Palmyra, Pa.) losing to Chris Harvey and Rob Knaster 8-4 to capture the doubles point.

Martins was also the lone USP player to record a win in singles competition, defeating Maula at #2 singles, 6-4, 6-3. In the other matches Garcia lost to Gennaoui at #1 singles, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) and Fine lost to Donovan , 6-1, 6-4 at #3 singles. Rubin lost at #4 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and Lukose dropped his #5 singles match to Knaster 6-3, 6-1. Senior Ken Connelly (Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.) rounded out USP's singles competitors, losing his #6 singles match to Alex Tomaino 7-6, 5-7, 0-1 (6-10).

Thursday's match concludes the fall portion of the USP Men's Tennis Teams's schedule. The Devils will return to action in March 2010.

Devils Fall Short in Season Opener (9/26/09)

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team came up short in Friday's season opening dual match against West Chester University, losing to the Golden Rams 5-3 at West Chester.

The Devils are now 0-1. West Chester improves to 1-1.

The Golden Rams took two of the three doubles matches to open a 2-1 lead heading into the singles competition. USP's lone win came at #3 doubles where senior Dan Rubin (Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) and junior Chris Lukose (Lassiter HS/Marietta, Ga.) defeated Alan Day and Jonathan Gordon 9-7. The Devils lost at #1 and #2 doubles by identical 8-5 scores with junior Francisco Garcia (Don Cesar Gascon/Balcarce Buenos Aires, Argentina) and sophomore Billy Fine (West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) falling at #1 singles and senior Ricardo Martins (Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Roger Van Scyoc (Palmyra Area HS/Palmyra, Pa.) losing at #2 singles.

Martins and Van Scyoc did however record the Devils only two singles wins of the match. Playing at #2 singles, Martins defeated John Howanski in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Van Scyoc was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Michael Ensor at #6 singles. Fine's #3 singles match went three sets with WCU's Matt Thomas hanging on for a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. Garcia (#1 singles) and Lukose (#4 singles) lost their matches in straight sets. Rubin's #5 singles match was called on account of darkness.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 when they visit La Salle University for a 4:00 p.m. match.
