Men's
Tennis Closes out Season with Win (4/30/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Men's tennis Team closed
out their 2006-07 season Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 win on the
road against Ramapo College.
With
the win, the Devils finish the season with a 12-2 record, their
best mark in the history of the program.
Leading
off with doubles competition, the Devils captured two of the three
doubles matches to lead 2-1 going into the singles competition.
Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg,
Pa.) and Ricardo Martins (Fr., Idegio
Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) improved to 5-0 as a
doubles team with an 8-5 pro-set win over Ross Switkes and Scott
Seaman at number one doubles. Paul Caceres (So., Bergen
Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.) and Ryan Pell
(Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.) also remained undefeated
as a doubles team (4-0) as they defeated Keith Dobrin and Allen
Kats, 8-3 at number two doubles. Greg Kohr and Matt Shau handed
the devils their sole doubles loss, an 8-4 defeat of Ken
Connelly (Fr., Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.) and
Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) at number
three doubles.
Leading
2-1, the Devils needed to win three of the six singles contests
to take the match, and did just that, winning at number one, three
and six singles. Weisel defeated Kats
6-0, 6-3 at number one singles to finish the season with a 12-3
record (11-1 at number one singles). Martins
defeated Dobrin (6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1 at number three singles. He concluded
his freshman campaign with a 10-6 singles record. Connelly
also enjoyed a fine freshman season, defeating Shau at number six
singles, 6-4, 6-2 to finish the season with a 9-2 record.
Caceres
lost to Switkes at number two singles, 6-7 (3), 1-6 to finish the
season with an 11-4 record. It was his first dual match loss at
number two singles this year (6-1). Rubin
and Pell also lost at number four and
number five singles respectively. Rubin
fell to Joe Marino, 6-2, 6-1 while Pell
dropped his match to Seaman in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 0-6.
The
men's tennis season has concluded with this match, as the Devils
did not secure an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.
Record
Setting Win for Devils (4/25/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team earned
their 11th win of the season Tuesday afternoon when they defeated
host West Chester University 7-2.
USP's
11 wins establish a new single season record for wins, bettering
the previous mark of 10 set back in 2000 when the Devils went 10-4.
The Devils are now 11-2 on the season.
The
Devils took two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1
lead in the match. Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe
Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.) and Ricardo Martins
(Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) remained
undefeated as a tandem at #1 doubles with an 8-2 win over Chip Diem
and Andrew Pollack. The same could be said for Paul
Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.) and
Ryan Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.)
who defeated Pete Braun and Jared Rabin at number two doubles, 8-5.
Weisel and Martins
are 4-0 since teaming up and Caceres
and Pell are 3-0. Roberto
Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru) and Dan
Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) dropped their
match at number three doubles 9-7 to Andrew Silverman and Mike Mulholland.
Weisel
improved to 11-3 on the season in singles competition with a 6-2,
6-1 win over Diem at number one singles. Caceres
also improved his singles record to 11-3 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over
Braun at number three singles. Franco
defeated Rabin at number four singles with an identical 6-0, 6-1
score and Pell shutout Silverman 6-0,
6-0 at number five singles. Ken Connelly (Fr., Sacred
Heart HS/Millville, N.J.) rounded out the Devils singles
winners with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Mulholland at number six singles.
West Chester's Pollack recorded the Golden Rams lone singles win
with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Martins
at number two singles.
The
Devils return to action on Friday, April 27, 2007 when they host
Post University in their final home match of the season. Action
is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
Devils
Sweep Bloomfield for Tenth Win (4/21/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team ran
their winning streak to five consecutive games with a 9-0 victory
over Bloomfield College Saturday afternoon at the tennis courts
at McNeill Field Saturday afternoon.
The
win improves the Devils record to 10-2 overall. Their 10 wins are
the most in a season since the 2000 season when the Devils went
10-4.
The
Devils swept through the doubles matches to take an early three
point lead in the match. Paul Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/
Teaneck, N.J.) and Ryan Pell (Jr., West
York Area HS/York, Pa.) shutout Matt Dutch and Jon
Torres, 8-0 to win their number two doubles match while Ken
Connelly (Fr., Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.) and
Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) defeated
Bernardo Aviles and Hector Rodriguez at number three doubles by
the same 8-0 score. Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe
Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.) and Ricardo Martins
(Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) completed
the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Bhaumik Patel and Danny Terrell
at number one doubles.
In
singles competition, Martins dispatched Terrell, 6-0, 6-0 at number
two singles while Caceres defeated Torres in straight sets 6-0,
6-0 at number three singles to earn his tenth singles win of the
season. Weisel was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Patel at number one singles,
improving his singles record to 10-3 on the season. Roberto Franco
(Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru) defeated Dutch 6-0, 6-1 at
number four singles for his ninth singles win. Connelly and Rubin
completed the sweep with wins at number five and number six singles
respectively. Connelly was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Aviles while Rubin
was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Rodriguez.
The
men's tennis team is on the road for their next match when they
take on West Chester University on Thursday, April 26, 2007. The
USP women's team is scheduled to play the Golden Rams as well.

Wins Fourth Straight Match (4/19/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team won
their fourth consecutive match Wednesday afternoon as they defeated
East Stroudsburg University 7-2 in a regional match in East Stroudsburg,
Pennsylvania.
The
win improves the Devils record to 9-2 overall. The loss evens ESU's
record at 6-6.
The
Devils started the match off by sweeping all three doubles matches.
Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg,
Pa.) and Ricardo Martins (Fr., Idegio
Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded an 8-4 pro-set
win over Jeff Kurz and Kyle Doebler at number one doubles while
Roberto Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru)
and Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.)
were 8-5 victors over Rob Mikolan and Ryan Drozd at number three
doubles. The number two doubles match was the closest of the three
as Paul Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.)
and Ryan Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.)
prevailed over Julian Taibi and Andrew Sorgi, 9-7.
The
Devils captured singles matches at number one, two, three and six.
Martins recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over
Doebler at number two singles and improved his record to 8-5. Weisel
improved to 9-3 on the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kurz at number
one singles. Caceres was a 10-6 pro-set
winner at number three singles, defeating Taibi while Ken
Connelly (Fr., Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.) was
a 10-8 pro-set winner over Drozd at number six singles. Caceres
is now 9-3 on the season while Connelly
is 6-2. Pell lost his match at number
five singles to Mikolan after winning the first set 7-5 but dropping
the second 6-3 and losing the tiebreaker 10-8. Sorgi won at number
four singles by default over Franco.
The
Devils return to action on Saturday when they host Bloomfield College.
The match is set to start at noon.

Defeat Marauders (4/18/07)
Millersville
University became the eighth team defeated by the University of
the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team yesterday afternoon
as the Devils, on the strength of their singles play, handed the
Marauders just their second loss of the spring season, a 6-3 defeat
in Millersville, Pennsylvania.
The
Devils improve to 8-2 overall. Millersville falls to 4-2.
The
Devils took two out of the three doubles matches with Tyler
Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.)
and Ricardo Martins (Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo,
Brazil) teaming up to earn an 8-2 pro-set win over
Greg Bennett and Chris Paolini at number one doubles. Roberto
Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru) and Dan
Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) defeated
Mark Trieres and Scott Smith, 8-6 at number three doubles for USP's
second point of the afternoon. Paul Caceres (So., Bergen
Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.) and Ken Connelly
(Fr., Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.) fell to Chris
Matisse and Jim Trieres at number two doubles, 8-2.
Leading
2-1 going into the singles competition, USP captured four of the
six singles matches to come away with the win. Caceres
defeated Matisse at number three singles 7-5, 6-4 to improve his
record to 8-3 on the season, while Connelly
was a 6-4, 6-3 victor over Smith at number six singles. USP's other
two singles wins went to three sets as Weisel
defeated Bennett, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at number one singles and Franco
defeated Jim Trieres 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 at number four singles. Weisel
and Franco are now 8-3 and 8-4 respectively
in singles competition this year. Martins
lost to Paolini 7-6, 6-0 at number two singles to drop his record
to 7-4 and Mark Trieres defeated Ryan Pell (Jr., West
York Area HS/York, Pa.) at
number five singles by default.
The
Devils return to action today when they take on East Stroudsburg
University in a Division II regional matchup in East Stroudsburg,
Pennsylvania.

Sweep Caldwell for Seventh Win of Season (4/14/07)
The University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team cruised to their
seventh win of the season this afternoon, defeating Caldwell College
9-0 at the tennis courts at McNeill field in Philadelphia.
The win improves
the Devils record to 7-2 overall.
The doubles
team of Ryan Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.)
and Ken Connelly (Fr., Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.)
got the first team point for the Devils with an 8-2 win over Marcus
Collins and Mike Ober at number three doubles. Ricardo
Martins (Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil)
and Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.)
followed with an 8-4 win over Amir Zandieh and Jan Marco-Jiras at
number two doubles. Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe

sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-4 win over Chris Costa and
Chris Lacura at #1 doubles, giving the Devils a 3-0 lead going into
the singles competition.
In singles
competition, Martins recorded a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory over
Collins at number three singles while Caceres defeated Lacura 6-1,
6-1 at number two singles. Pell defeated Jiras 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5)
at number five singles while Connelly was a 6-1, 7-6 winner over
Ober at number six singles. Weisel won the toughest match of the
day, a three set thriller over Costa, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at number one
singles. Roberto Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima,
Peru) closed out the competition with an 8-0 pro-set
win over Zandieh at number four singles.

the Devils will take on Post University on Sunday, April 15, 2007
in Philadelphia. The match is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.

Back on Winning Track(4/3/04)
Less than 24 hours after dropping their second consecutive match,
the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men’s tennis team
chalked up another win, defeating area rival Philadelphia University
7-2 this afternoon at the McNeill tennis courts on campus.
The win improves the Devils record to 6-2 on the season. Philadelphia
University drops to 2-8.
Doubles took the stage to open the match with the team of Roberto
Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru) and Ricardo Martins
(Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) earning
the first team point with an 8-3 win over Skylar Tibbits and Boo
Burnier at the number two slot. Tyler Weisel (Jr., Greater
Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.) and Paul Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/
Teaneck, N.J.) followed with a win at number one doubles,
defeating Anders Novesky and Alex Richter by an identical 8-3 score.
Ryan Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.) and Dan
Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) completed
the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Mike Abate and Pat Midway.
Martins easily defeated Abate at number

Sweeps Devils (4/3/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team dropped
their second consecutive match of the season yesterday afternoon,
falling to nationally ranked Haverford College, 9-0 in Haverford,
Pennsylvania.
The
loss drops the Devils to 5-2 on the season, Haverford, ranked #30
nationally in Division III and #7 in the Division III Atlantic South
region, improves to 8-0.
Steve Feder and Dave Merrell earned the Fords first team point of
the day at number three doubles with a 8-0 win over Ryan
Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.) and
Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.).
Marc Adelberg and Tom Kinrade were 8-3 winners at number two doubles

Suffer First Loss of the Season (4/2/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team suffered
their first loss of the 2006-07 campaign on Saturday as Bloomsburg
University defeated the Devils 7-1 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
The
loss drops the Devils to 5-1 on the year.
The
Devils lone victory on the afternoon came at the number six singles
slot as Ken Connelly (Fr., Sacred Heart
HS/Millville, N.J.) defeated Mike Marra 6-3,
6-2.
USP
dropped all three doubles contests to open the match. Tyler

Start Spring Season with a Win (3/15/07)
The
men's tennis team at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
took up where there left off last fall, recording a 9-0 win over
Chestnut Hill College yesterday afternoon the Chestnut Hill College
tennis courts.
The
doubles contests took the courts first with the Devils sweeping
all three matches. Tyler Weisel
(Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.)
and Paul
Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.)
defeated Shane Lesher and Garrett Senior at #1 doubles 8-2 while
Roberto Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln
HS/Lima, Peru) and Ricardo Martins
(Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo, Brazil) won their
#2 doubles match over Ryan Karle and Mike Devine by an identical
8-2 score. Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.)
and Ken Connelly (Fr., Sacred Heart HS/Millville, N.J.)
teamed up at #3 doubles to defeat David Beltram and Dan Vizak, 8-0
to take a 3-0 lead in the match.
In
singles competition, Weisel defeated Lesher,
6-2, 6-0 at #1 singles while Caceres defeated
Karle, 6-0, 6-1 at #2 singles. Franco
recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Senior at #3 singles and Martins
was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Devine at #4 singles. Rounding out the
singles winners were Rubin and Connelly.

at #5 singles while Connelly shutout Kyle
DeRiemer, 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles.

Devils return to action this afternoon when they travel to the Main

Remains Perfect with Win over Ursinus (10/13/06)
The University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis team closed out the
fall portion of their schedule yesterday afternoon with a 9-0 win
over Ursinus College at the McNeil Tennis Courts in Philadelphia.
The Devils
remain undefeated with the win and improve to 4-0.
Opening the
match with doubles, the Devils swept all three contests to take
an early 3-0 lead. Tyler
Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.)
and Paul
Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.)
defeated Greg Hoffman and Jed Ellwood, 8-0 at number one doubles.
At number two doubles, Roberto

Moving on
to singles competition, the Devils swept all six matches to complete
the 9-0 sweep of the Bears. At number one flight, Weisel
defeated Metcalf, 6-0, 6-1. Caceres defeated
Ellwood, 6-0, 6-2 at number two flight. Franco
was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Hoffman at number three flight while
Martins recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over
Wanderlin at number four flight. At number five flight, Pell
defeated Leydett, 6-0, 6-0 while Rubin
defeated Palmer, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at number six flight.
Yesterday's
match was the Devils last fall match. The USP men's tennis team
will resume competition in the spring '07.

Shutout Rams for Third Straight Win (10/5/06)
Fresh off
their performance at the recent ITA Regional Championships last
weekend, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's tennis
team returned to dual match action, defeating the Philadelphia University
Rams 9-0 to remain undefeated.
The win improves
the Devils record to 3-0.
Starting off
with the doubles competition, the Devils swept all three matches
by identical pro-set scores of 8-4. Tyler
Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.)

defeated Alex Richter and Bob Burnier at number one doubles. At

over Burnier. Martins recorded a 6-2,

handed Boris Jarocz a 6-4, 7-5 defeat at number five flight. Rounding
out the singles winners was Rubin, a 6-3,
6-2 victor over Bermeo at number six flight.

will take on Ursinus College in their only home match of the fall
on Thursday, October 12, 2006 as they conclude the fall portion
of their schedule.

straight match of the season yesterday with an 8-1 victory at West
Chester University.
USP improves
to 2-0 with the win while West Chester falls to 0-2.
The Devils
started off the match by capturing all three doubles matches. Tyler
Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.)
and Paul

singles wins to give the Devils five singles victories in six matches.
Franco defeated Mulholland 6-2, 6-1 at
number three singles while Martins defeated
Pugliese 6-1, 7-5 at the number four spot. Rubin
rounded out the USP winners with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Andrew Racilla
at number six singles.
West Chester's
only point of the match came at number five singles as Braun defeated
Pell, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
The Devils
will be competing this weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament held
at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Kick off Season with Hard Fought Win at LaSalle (9/25/06)
The University of the Sciences
in Philadelphia men's tennis team started their fall 2006 campaign
the same way they finished the season in the spring, with a victory.
In a match scheduled, rescheduled and rescheduled again, the Devils
battled Division I LaSalle University handing the Explorers a 4-3
defeat at LaSalle's Belfield Courts last Friday afternoon.
The doubles teams took
to the courts first on the afternoon with the Devils needing to
win two of the three matches to earn the one point available according
to Division I scoring rules. USP's #3 doubles team of Ryan
Pell (Jr., West York Area HS/York, Pa.)
and Dan Rubin (Fr., Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.)
dropped their doubles match to Erick Glick and Matt Rivera, 8-2
to force the Devils to win the remaining two doubles matches to
earn the point.
USP did just that as Tyler
Weisel (Jr., Greater Latrobe Sr. HS/Greensburg, Pa.)
and Paul
Caceres (So., Bergen Catholic/ Teaneck, N.J.)
took the #1 doubles match, defeating Jonathan Maula and Scott Karwowski,
8-4 and Roberto
Franco (Sr., Abraham Lincoln HS/Lima, Peru)
and Ricardo Martins (Fr., Idegio Pentagono/Sao Paulo,
Brazil) defeated Ross Flockerzie and Christian Harvey,
8-4 to earn the point and put the Devils up 1-0 heading into the
singles competition.
Caceres
scored an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles defeating Karwowski and
Weisel defeated Flockerzie 6-2, 6-1 at
#1 singles. LaSalle countered with straight sets wins at #5 and
#6 singles. Chris Butera defeated Pell
6-2, 6-2 at the number five flight while Rubin
lost to Phil Loatman 4-6, 4-6 at the number six flight.
At number four flight Martins
dropped the first set to Glick 6-3 and took the second set into
a tiebreaker. Glick scored a 12-10 victory in the tiebreaker to
take the second set and the match 7-6. Franco,
playing at number three singles, had the toughest match of all,
dropping the first set 4-6 to Rivera before taking the next two
6-4 and 6-3 to give the Devils a split of the six singles matches
and the team victory 4-3.
The Devils will play at
West Chester on Thursday, September 28, 2006 before heading north
to Bloomsburg for the regional ITA Tournament.
