offense was nearly perfect in the first 11 minutes, making 10 of their
first 12 shots, including three of four from beyond the arc and built
a nine point lead 25-16 with 8:18 left.
USP scored the
next six points to pull within three, 25-22 before the Wolves, who wound
up shooting 60.9% (14-23) from the field in the half, forged a seven
point lead at the break 33-26.
The Devils shooting
suddenly went cold as Cheyney pulled away in the second half with a
16-2 run in the first 6:50 and led by 21, 49-28 with 13:10 left. USP
cut the lead down to 19 by the 6:15 mark before the Wolves closed out
the game with a 13-5 spurt to give them a 27-point win, 69-42.
USP made just six
of 30 shots in the second half (20%) and finished the game shooting
27.4% (17-62). Cheyney finished the game with a 51.8% effort (29-56)
and out rebounded the Devils 46-33. USP held a slight advantage on the
line 6-13 to 4-8 but were out shot from beyond the arc, making just
two of 19 shots to Cheyney's 7-for-15 effort.

University is next for the Devils on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the
Gallagher Center on the Rams campus. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
Devils
Comeback to Defeat Lightning (2/2/08)
Senior Keith
Dundas made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left in the
game to give the Devils a 59-58 win over Goldey-Beacom College in a
Central Atlantic Collegiate conference men's basketball game at Saturday
at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Devils improve
to 10-10 overall with the win, their third straight and 4-6 in CACC
games. Goldey Beacom falls to 10-9 overall and is also 4-6 in league
play. Both teams, along with Wilmington University who also lost today,
are currently in a three-way tie for the third and fourth playoff spots
in the CACC South Division.
USP, which saw
a seven-point lead evaporate in under two minutes in the latter stages
of the game, trailed by three with 2:24 to go before Dundas
(Pennsbury HS/Yardley, Pa.) hit a baseline jumper at the
1:53 mark to pull the Devils within one, 58-57. GBC's Samuel McDuffie
missed the front end of a one-and-one but the Lightning came up with
a defensive stop with 58 ticks left on the clock. The Devils then had
a stop of their own with 24 seconds left but turned the ball over with
just 14 ticks on the clock and still trailing by one. USP then fouled
Adrian Miles with 12.4 seconds left. Miles missed the front end of the
one-and-one and USP's Shane Connor (Jr., Pocono Mountain
East HS/Canadensis, Pa.) grabbed the rebound and pushed
the ball upcourt. Dundas went up for the shot
and was fouled by Maurice Maxwell with 5.1 seconds left. Keith
promptly sank both free throws to give the Devils a one-point lead,
59-58. Derek Savage's running jumper missed the mark as time expired
and the Devils escaped with their first win at Goldey Beacom since the
2003-04 season.
Dundas
led all scorers with 18 points. Connor came
off the bench to score 15. Junior Jarrod Frazier (St. Augustine
Prep HS/Port Norris, N.J.) added 11 points, a game-high
nine rebounds and three steals. Dundas and
junior Charlie Fritsch (The Hun School (N.J.)/Durham, N.C.)
had five assists apiece.
Steven Cooper led
the Lightning with 16 points while Azeez Ellegood and Savage chipped
in 12 and 11 respectively. Miles added 10 points to join his three teammates
in double figures.
USP led the game
for the entire first half, taking a seven point margin into the locker
room at the break, 32-25. After a three-point field goal by Fritsch
boosted the Devils lead to eight, 35-27 early in the final stanza, the
Lightning rallied to tie the game at 41-41 with a 14-6 run.
A traditional three-point
play by McDuffie and two free throws by Cooper shaved five points off
the Devils lead in just 1:38. Connor brought
the Devils lead back up to seven with two 3-balls before three straight
baskets by Goldey-Beacom, capped with a 'trey' by McDuffie tied the
score with 12:44 left. The Devils countered with an 11-4 spurt to rebuild
their lead to seven, 52-45 with 7:39 left. Dundas'
'trey started the run and USP still led by three, 48-45 when Dundas
and freshman Michael Larkin (Monsignor Farrell HS/Staten
Island, N.Y.) each scored to complete the run, making
the score 52-45 before the Lighting rallied again, and this time took
the lead.
It took just under
two minutes for the Lightning to gain their first lead of the game,
scoring eight straight points, courtesy of two Cooper free throws and
three-point field goals from Ellegood and Savage. GBC was not finished
as they tacked on three more points to complete an 11-0 run and take
a 56-52 lead with 4:48 left. Dundas made the
first of two free throws to cut the lead to three and then the Lightning
turned the ball over. Sophomore Curtis Fitch's (Marianapolis
Prep HS/North Grosvenordale, Conn.) put- back pulled the
Devils within one before Ellegood's two free throws made the margin
three, 58-55 and set the stage for the final heroics of the last two
minutes of play.
For the third straight
game, the Devils shot 50% or better from the field, connecting on 24
of 48 shots for an even 50% effort. Goldey-Beacom made 21 of 49 shots
from the field (42.9%) but held a 2-to-1 edge on the free throw line
(12-18/6-7). Both teams took 13 three-point attempts with the Devils
making one more 'trey' (5/4). USP also held the edge on the boards,
outrebounding the Lightning 31-24, marking the 15th time this season
the Devils held a rebounding edge over their opponent (USP is 10-5 in
those games).
The Devils return
to action on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 when they host Cheyney University
in a non-league game at the Bobby Morgan Arena. Tip off is set for 7:00
p.m.

54 seconds left. Both teams exchanged points in the final minutes and

Dundas and a layup by Fritsch
gave the Devils a 24-point lead, 53-29 to start off the final 20 minutes
of action. Wilmington closed within 19, 62-43 at the 13:51 mark but
over the next five minutes USP outscored Wilmington, 18-9 to take their
biggest lead of the game, 28 points, 80-52 with 8:29 left. The Wildcats
could get no closer than 24 points the rest of the way as the Devils
cruised to their second straight win, 94-68.
USP finished the
game with a 60.7% mark from the field, connecting on 37 of 61 shots,
including six of 11 from beyond the arc. (54.5%). The Wildcats finished
the game shooting just 33.3% (23-69) from the field and had a 9-for-26
mark (34.6%) from beyond the arc. USP held a slight 14-13 advantage
on the free throw line but as they have all season long, dominated on
the boards, outrebounding the Wildcats 45-32. The Devils also turned
in a solid assist/turnover mark 20/14 while the Wildcats recorded a
12/11 mark.
The Devils return

The win snaps a

the 9:24 mark of the first period. The eight point spurt was part of
a 21-8 run over the first six minutes as the Devils took a 54-47 lead.
The Pioneers rallied
to pull within two 58-56 with 11:50 left before USP went on a 14-4 run

started the push with three-point field goals. After CUC’s Jeff Bigelow
made a layup, Fritsch added a layup, Dundas
two free throws and Connor another ‘trey’
to make the score 71-60. Frazier then made
one of two free throws to complete the run and give USP a 72-60 lead
with 8:08 left before the Pioneers made one final push.
Columbia Union
scored the next eight points to pull within four 72-68 with 4:29 left

The University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia men’s basketball team’s late rally fell
short as Dominican College hung on to win 72-68 Saturday afternoon in
Orangeburg, New York.
The loss drops
the Devils to 7-10 overall and 2-6 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference
games. Dominican improves to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in league play.
USP placed
four players in double figures, led by senior Keith Dundas
(Pennsbury HS/Yardley, Pa.). Dundas

came off the bench to score 15 points. Brandon Brock and Brendan McManus
each added 10 points. Knez led all players with eight rebounds. Damien
Davis led the Chargers with five assists.
The Chargers
jumped out to a 12-2 lead and led by 11 in the first half, 23-12 when
the Devils came back to cut the lead to one with a 10-0 run. Dundas
and Frazier started the run and freshman Adewale
Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/Chesilhurst, N.J.) followed
with a steal and a dunk to make the score 23-18. Frazier
completed the run with two layups and the Devils trailed 23-22 with

31-23 with 2:56 remaining before settling in for seven point halftime

The Chargers
lead stayed between four and nine points for the first ten minutes of
the final stanza until Carty’s layup at the 9:41 mark put the Chargers
ahead by 11, 53-42. The Devils then scored seven straight points to
pull back within four 53-49 with Dundas getting
five of them before Knez made two straight layups to boost DC’s lead
back to eight 57-49 with 6:49. Dundas then
cut the Chargers lead in half on one play, nailing a three-point field
goal as he was fouled; and making the free throw for a four-point play.
With the
score now, 57-53, the Chargers made two straight three-point field goals
to go back up by 10, 63-53 with 4:12 left before the Devils began their
final push. USP went on a 9-3 spurt, capped by Connor’s
‘trey’ to pull within four 66-62 with 1:48 left. After two free throws
by DC’s Tim Matchett made the score 70-64, Connor
made one of two free throws with Frazier putting
back the miss on the second to make the score 70-67 with 22 seconds

throws in the last 11 seconds to seal the win, 72-68.
Both teams shot
about the same from the field with the Chargers holding a slight advantage,
hitting 49.1% (28-57) of their shots to USP’s 47.4 % (27-57). DC made

union College. USP then returns home to face Wilmington College on Thursday,
January 31, 2008. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
Tigers
Defeat Devils (1/23/08)
Three turnovers
in the final 41 seconds of the first half of Wednesday night’s Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s basketball game between the University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Holy Family University turned a
close game into a ten point lead for Tigers; a lead the Devils never
recovered from as the Tigers went on to defeat the Devils 69-58 at the
Campus Center in Northeast Philadelphia.
The loss, USP’s
third in their last four games, drops their record to 7-9 overall and
2-5 in CACC games. The Tigers improve to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in league
games.
Freshman
Adewale Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/Chesilhurst, N.J.)
led the Devils with 17 points. Junior Jarrod Frazier (St.
Augustine Prep/Port Norris, N.J.) added 16 points and
pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. No other USP player had more
than six points on the evening. Senior Keith Dundas (Pennsbury
HS/Yardley, Pa.) had three assists on the night.
The Tigers placed
four players in double figures, led by Michael Sturns. Sturns scored
21 points, three below his best in the nation average of 24.7 per game.
Ryan Lancaster added 15 points while David Kellstrom and London Houston
each chipped in 10. Houston added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Sturns and Quincy Marshall led the Tigers with four assists apiece.
The Devils
had trailed by eight earlier in the first half and had just cut the
lead in half when the turnover bug bit them. Frazier’s
layup made the score 28-24 and just made a defensive stop when the first
turnover occurred, leading to a fast break dunk by Lancaster. Another
turnover at the 22-second mark led to another layup and an eight point
Tiger lead. The third turnover came in the final six seconds of play
leading to another HF layup and giving the Tigers a ten-point lead 38-28.
The ten
point deficit was one the Devils could not recover from as the Tigers
scored the first four points of the half from the foul line, a place
where they became quite familiar with in the period, with nearly half
of their second half production (15 points on a perfect 15-for-15 shooting)
at the charity stripe. Adefemi’s first career
three-point field goal (a 20 footer from the baseline) later pulled
the Devils within nine 46-37 with 15:06 left, only to have the Tigers
run off five straight points to again lead by 14, 51-37.
Frazier
broke the mini-run with a basket at the 13:26 mark and the Devils then
held the Tigers scoreless for the next 5:49. However, USP’s offense
also went stagnant as they did not score a point for the first 4:19
of the Tiger’s scoring draught with the score remaining 51-39 until
junior Brendan Rutledge (Hopewell Valley Central HS/Ewing
Township, N.J.) scored at the 9:07 mark. Rutledge
added a free throw at the 8:09 mark and the Devils were back within
nine, 51-42. This was as close as USP would come as the Tigers eventually
opened up a 15-point lead before settling in for the 11-point win, 69-58.
Both teams turned
in almost identical shooting percentages from the field with the Devils
holding a slight advantage (26-62, 41.9%) over the Tigers (25-60, 41.7%).
The Tigers did dominate on the free throw line, hitting 18 of 19 (94.7%)
for the game while the Devils barely got to the line all night, making
just five of seven (71.4%). Holy Family held a 39-34 advantage on the
boards and committed three fewer turnovers (11-14).
The Devils return
to action on Saturday, January 26, 2008 when the face Dominican College
in Orangeburg, New York. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.

USP had led by
one, 24-23 in the first half when the Devils went on a 12-2 run to take
an 11-point lead 36-25 with just over five minutes in the period. Fritsch
started the run with a pair of free throws, followed by a three-point
field goal by Dundas. After a Lincoln basket,
Fitch responded with a layup and Dundas

game at 12 points, 43-31. The Lions then began a 21-8 surge over the
next six minutes to take their first lead since 2-0 in the first period.
Two 'treys' by Johnson cut the lead in half, 43-37. Blanton-Holcombe
later added a 'three' of his own to pull the Lions within three 49-46.
After a Fritsch layup boosted the lead back
to five 51-46, the lions got two free throws from Julian Hall and layups
from Johnson and Blanton-Holcombe to take their first lead since the
opening possession, 52-51 at the 13:03 mark. Both layups came off USP
turnovers.
Over the next seven
minutes, neither neither team led by more than two points with two ties
and eight lead changes. Blanton-Holcombe's jumper at the 6:09 mark gave
Lincoln a 64-63 lead before the Devils ran off six straight points to
retake control of the game. Frazier stated
things off with a layup. Fitch followed with
a pair of free throws and Fritsch added a
driving layup to make the score 69-64 in favor of the Devils with 4:51
left. Lincoln hung tough and eventually pulled within three 73-70 with
2:30 left. Dundas then nailed a 24 foot jumper
as the shot clock was expiring to boost USP's lead to six, 76-70 with
just 1:55 left. USP closed out the game with five free throws to hold
off the Lions and preserve the win, 81-75.
Statistically speaking
both teams stats were similar except for rebounds, where the Devils
held a 47-30 edge and foul shots where USP also had an advantage, hitting
19 of 30 (63.3%) shots to Lincoln's 12 of 14 (85.7%). Both teams made
29 field goals with the Devils taking two more shots to finish shooting
29-66, 43.9% to Lincoln's 45.3% (29-64). The Lions made five three-point
field goals while USP had four but the Devils turned in a better assist/turnover
margin 14/15 to Lincoln's 11/14.
The Devils return
to action on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 when they face Holy Family
University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference southern division
clash. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.

The game
was close throughout with neither team leading by more than six points
the entire way. The Griffins held a six points lead midway through the
first half before the Devils fought back to take a 38-36 lead into the
locker room at the break on a Fritsch layup

The Devils
boosted their lead to four points on two occasions early in the second
but the Griffins kept in close, courtesy of the long ball. Williams’
‘trey’ at the 15:37 mark cut the lead to one, 44-43 and the lead would
fluctuate between one and three points for the next five minutes until
Williams put the Griffins ahead by one 53-52 with two free throws at
the 9:46 mark. Junior Curtis Fitch’s (Marianapolis Prep/North
Grosvenordale, Conn.) layup gave the lead back to the
Devils 54-53 before the Griffins ran off five straight points to take
a four-point lead 58-54 with 8:23 left. USP battled back within one
but the lead again grew to five 62-57 on two more free throws from Williams,

62-62 with 4:42 left. The Griffins would use a 5-1 mini-run, capped
by a ‘3-ball’ from McFadden with 1:38 left to take a 69-63 lead. Dundas
countered with a ‘trey’ of his own to pull the Devils back within three
69-66 and the Devils later forced a turnover with 33 seconds left and
had a chance to tie but Connor’s three point
attempt missed and the Griffins made three of four free throws in the
final 19 seconds to seal the win 72-66.
The Devils have
two non-conference games on their slate before returning to conference
play. USP will travel northward to take on East Stroudsburg University
