Devils
Open Post Season with a Win over Tigers (2/27/07)
The Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference men's basketball playoffs opened tonight and the
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia wasted no time, jumping out
to a 17-2 lead over Holy Family University and made it hold up for a
55-50 win at the Campus Center on Holy Family's campus in northeast
Philadelphia.
With the win, the
sixth-seeded Devils improve to 13-14 overall and advance to the semi-finals
of the CACC Tournament. Holy Family, the #3 seed in the tournament drops
to 19-9 on the season.
Keith
Dundas (Jr., Pennsbury HS/ Morrisville, Pa.) led three
players in double figures for the Devils, scoring 13 points. Bill
Kurtz (Sr., Shawnee HS/ Shamong, N.J.) and Eric
Cangelosi (Sr., Camden Catholic HS/Haddon Heights, N.J.)
added 12 points each while Howard Lanier (Jr., St. Augustine
Prep/ Sicklerville, N.J.) and Collin Harrington
(Sr., Bishop Eustace HS/Sewell, N.J.) chipped in eight
apiece. Harrington also led the Devils with
12 rebounds. Dundas also dished out a game-high
four assists.
Raheem Scott was
the lone Tiger in double figures, scoring 14 points (10 in the second
half). London Houston paced the Tigers on the boards with eight rebounds
while Edward Greene-Long added seven boards to go along with his nine
points.
The Devils
never trailed in this one, pouncing on the Tigers right from the opening
tip. Both teams exchanged baskets in the opening two minutes before
the Devils scored 15 straight points to take a 17-2 lead. After Long
followed up his own miss for a layup to tie the score at 2-2, the Devils
got baskets from Harrington and Cangelosi,
followed by a three-point field goal by Kurtz
to lead 9-2 and force a Tiger timeout. After the timeout, Cangelosi
made it 10-2 making the second of two free throws and Dundas
boosted the Devils lead to 11, 13-2 with a three-pointer from the right
side at the 15:10 mark. A layup by Harrington
and two more free throws by Cangelosi and
the Devils had a 17-2 lead with 12:40 left. Andrew Pressner's 3-ball
brought the Tiger scoring drought and Houston
added two free throws to pull Holy Family within 10, 17-7 with 11:11
left. The lead remained in double digits for the rest of the half, shuffling
between 10 and 14 points as the Devils slowed down the pace on every
possession, before Ryan Lancaster made his lone basket of the evening,
a three-point field goal to make the score 34-23 with 1:18 left, which
is where the score stood at the break.
The Tigers
opened the second half with a 13-8 run to pull within six, 42-36 at
the 13:13 mark. A basket by Dundas made the
score 44-36 before Bruce Davenport made one of two free throws and Scott
nailed a short jumper to close the gap to five, 44-39 with 9:52 left.
A little over four minutes later, Scott hit a trifecta to pull the Tigers
within four 48-44 with 5:15 left. Both teams scored no their next possession
and the Devils still led by four, 50-46 with 4:38 left. Dundas
then scored two straight baskets to give the Devils an eight-point lead
54-46 with 3:03 left. Greene-Long's follow-up layup at 1:46 made the
score 54-48. A USP turnover led to another Tiger basket, making the
score 54-40 with one minute left.
Reminiscent
of the final minute of the February 5th game between these two teams
at Holy Family's Campus Center, USP turned the ball over again, giving
the Tigers a chance to cut the lead to two. The result this time was
different. After another Tiger timeout with 14.4 seconds left, Scott
had a pass picked off by Lanier who raced
down the court and was fouled going in for a potential layup with 5.0
seconds left. Lanier made one of two free
throws to make the score 55-50. Lancaster's (1-14 FG) desperation three-pointer
fell short as the buzzer sounded, giving the Devils the win.
The Devils finished
the game shooting 43.5% (20-46, 4-13 3FG) from the field and were 11-for-17
(64.7%) from the foul line. The Tigers shot 35.2% (19-54, 6-21 3FG)
and were 6-for-11 (54.5%) from the foul line. USP held a slight advantage
on the boards, 33-32 and produced a solid assist/turnover margin (13/14).
The Tigers committed one fewer turnover (13) but finished the game with
just nine assists.
The Devils
advance to play the #2 seed Post University on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at
Dominican College (Orangeburg, N.Y.) in the semi-final round. Post defeated
Felician College tonight 77-71. The Devils split the season series with

the second half progressed, executing their offense with precision like
accuracy. For the game the Devils shot 50% (29-58, 6-15 3FG) from the

Break Three-Point Record as Devils Fall to Deacons (2/7/07)
William
Kurtz became the Devils' all-time leader in three-point
field goals tonight as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
men's basketball team lost to Bloomfield College 76-67 in a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.
Kurtz
(Sr., Shawnee HS/ Shamong, N.J.) entered the game with
251 career three-point field goals, two behind all time leader Joe Miller's
253. Miller played form 1991-1995. Bill took
little time in tying the record, getting two 'trey's in the first 3:13
of the game. However it wasn't until the 13:03 mark of the second half,
when Kurtz took a pass from Eric
Cangelosi (Sr., Camden Catholic HS/Haddon Heights, N.J.)
and buried a 20 foot jumper from the left side to break the mark with
his 254th career three-point field goal. Kurtz
added another 'trey' in the final minute to give him four on the night
and 255 for his career.
Kurtz
led the Devils with 18 points, one of four players in double figures
for USP. Keith Dundas (Jr., Pennsbury HS/ Morrisville, Pa.)
added 15 points while Howard Lanier (Jr., St. Augustine

and the Deacons finished the game hitting 19 of 22 (86.4%). USP made
11 of 13 from the free throw line (84.6%).
The loss
drops the Devils record to 10-12 overall and 8-9 in league play. Bloomfield

went on a 12-2 run to take a 34-26 lead with 2:39 left. Michael
Mullane's (Sr., Cherokee HS/Marlton, N.J.) two free throws
tied the game at 24-all before Cangelosi nailed
a three-point field goal to give USP a three-point lead, 27-24. Dundas
followed with a traditional three-point play to boost USP's margin to
six before BC's Chris Sampson had a layup to cut the lead back to four
30-26. Kurtz added a jumper and Mullane
another pair of free throws to complete the run. The Deacons scored
the final six points of the half (3 FT's by Dabney and a 'trey' by Nhamdi

the fifth time at 43-all at the 13:56 mark, getting baskets from Harrington,

from Lanier. The Deacons then took a slim
lead 49-48, followed by an 8-2 run by USP to go up by five, 56-51 midway
through the period. The lead fluctuated between three and five points
until a layup by Knox pulled the Deacons within one, 58-57 with 7:07
left. Dundas' layup some 10 seconds later
made the score 60-57. Bloomfield then rattled off ten straight points
to go back up by seven 67-60 with just 1:48 left in the game. Two free
throws by Cangelosi pulled the Devils within
five 67-62 before Sampson added a three-point play to boost BC's lead
to eight 70-62. Kurtz added his final 'trey'
of the game to make the score 70-65 with just 47 seconds left but this
was as close as the Devils would get as the Deacons knocked down six
straight free throws in the final 46 seconds to provide the final margin
of victory 76-67.
Bloomfield
finished the game shooting 44.4% from the field (24-54, 9-20 3FG). The

when anything that could go wrong went wrong. A USP turnover led to

19 seconds left to make the score 58-57. Houston then stole the inbounds
pass and scored with 15.9 seconds left to give the Tigers their first

Kurtz
Helps Lead Devils to Upset Win over Rams (1/16/06)
William Kurtz's
fade-away 23 foot jumper with 23.8 seconds left and the shot clock expiring
proved to be the game-winner as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
men's basketball team recorded a 56-51 victory over the first place
Philadelphia University Rams at the A & R Center tonight.
The win improves the Devils
overall record to 9-6 overall and 7-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference games. The Rams, in suffering their first CACC loss on their
home court this season, fell to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in league play.
Kurtz (Sr., Shawnee
HS/Shamong, N.J.) led all scorers with 27 points. For
the second time in three games, the senior guard sank seven three-point
field goals, including the decisive basket as the clock wound down.
Eric Cangelosi (Sr., Camden Catholic HS/Haddon Heights,
N.J.) added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Howard
Lanier (Jr., St. Augustine Prep/Sicklerville, N.J.) chipped
in 10 points and had a game-high four assists. Kurtz also recorded four
assists.
Jason Hickenbottom led the
Rams with 17 points before fouling out with 4:42 left in the game. Christian
Burns recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Russell
Frederick had four assists.
The Devils had built a 51-43
lead with 3:42 left, only to have the Rams score eight straight points
to tie the game. Russell Frederick's layup with 58.4 seconds capped
the run which saw Frederick score seven of the teams eight points during
the run. The Devils were patient on offense during their next possession
working the ball around the perimeter. Kurtz
finally got the ball as the shot clock was winding down and launched
an NBA range fade-away from the left side which caught nothing but net
and gave the Devils a 54-51 lead. After a Ram timeout, Frederick penetrated
the lane and lost the ball to Kurtz who took
a few dribbles forward and was fouled. Kurtz
made both free throws with 9.3 seconds left to put the icing on the
cake. Two three point field goal attempts by the Rams in the final seconds
failed and the Devils had their upset win.
It was the third of Kurtz's
five second half three's that gave the Devils their first lead of the
second half 40-37 at the 8:11 mark. After Burns cut the lead to 40-38
with a free throw, the Devils, over the next 4:08, the Devils engineered
an 11-5 spurt to take an eight point lead 51-43. Cangelosi
started the run with a pair of free throws and Kurtz
added another trey to make the score 45-38. After two free throws by
Hickenbottom, Cangelosi countered with a layup
to keep the spread at seven, 47-40. PU's Levi Winters then sank a three
point field goal to pull the Rams within four 47-43. Kurtz
made two free throws at the 4:42 mark and Lanier then added a driving
bank shot as the shot clock was expiring to end the run but not the
drama as the Rams then began their comeback leading up to the final
Kurtz 3-ball to win it for USP.
For the game, the Devils connected
on 18 of 40 shots from the field (45%). The Rams also made 18 field
goals on 48 shots (37.5%). The big difference was found beyond the arc
as the Devils made 11 of 22 three point shots (50%) to PU's 3-of-13
(23.1%). Both teams were fairly even on the charity stripe with the
Devils making nine of 14 (64.3%) and the Rams, 12 of 19 (63.2%). The
Rams outrebounded the Devils 31-27.
