Men’s Basketball Program Announces Incoming Class for 2009-10

Philadelphia, Pa. (July 1, 2009) - University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and head men’s basketball coach David Pauley are pleased to announce the addition of nine new players as the teams prepares for the 2009-10 season.

The nine players will help fill the void left by the departure of seven players from the 2008-09 team, five of whom had completed their eligibility.

Coach Pauley went back to familiar territory, the Philadelphia Catholic League and Delaware County to get guard Brian Boyle of Monsignor Bonner High School. Boyle was an honorable mention All-Catholic League selection in 2009. The 6’1 guard also hails from a strong basketball background. His grandfather, the late Jim Boyle, was the head coach at St. Joseph’s University for nine seasons and is a Big Five Hall of Fame member. His other grandfather is current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Jim Lynam. Boyle will be and exercise science and wellness management major at USP.

Joining Boyle in the backcourt will be another Delaware County product, Avatar Jones from Strath Haven High School. The 6’1” Jones was an honorable mention All-Central League selection in 2009.

Prep Charter’s Zaahid Holloman and Lawrenceville Prep’s Will Kernan complete the Devils incoming backcourt players. Kernan was named to the Trentonian’s All-Prep team as a second team selection. Holloman led Prep Charter to a 22-7 record before losing to Imhotep in the PIAA Class AA state quarterfinal game. Kernan and Holloman, along with Jones will be pursuing Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from USP

In the front court, Pauley brings in four players who were first team all-league selections in their respective conferences last season. Matt Whitworth (Ocean City High School) was an All-Cape Atlantic Selection and set a school record for three-point field goals this past season. Matt’s older brother Pat played for coach Pauley for two years before injuries forced him to hang up his sneakers. His other two brothers Tom (Philadelphia University) and Tim (Drexel University) also had outstanding college careers at their respective schools. Whitworth will be a pharmaceutical marketing/management major at USP.

Another New Jersey signee for the Devils is 6’6” forward Ryan Duffy from Phillipsburg High School. Duffy was First Team All Skyland Conference Selection as the Stateliners made it to the first round of the NJSIAA playoffs. Duffy will major in environmental science.

Henry Messinger will join his older brother Myer at USP in 2009-10. The Dallas High school grad was a first team Wyoming Valley Conference honoree while averaging 18.6 points per game. Messinger also recorded an average of seven rebounds and five blocked shots per game in 08-09. Messinger will be major in pharmaceutical marketing/management.

Rounding out the front court signees are Alec McClure of Wissahickon High School and Ben Edwards, a transfer from Bucks County Community College. McClure, a 6-3” small forward, was a First Team All-Suburban One Conference selection in 2008-09. Edwards, was a two-year starter at BCCC and played his high school ball at Central Buck South and Central Bucks West High Schools. McClure, like Messinger and Whitworth, will be a pharmaceutical marketing/management major at USP. Edwards will major in pharmaceutical sciences.

The USP men’s basketball team posted a 7-20 record last season and failed to qualify for post season play for just the first time since the 1980-81 campaign.
