| USP Finishes Ninth at CACC Championships (4/22/09) The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia golf team concluded their 2008-09 season on Tuesday as they competed at the Central atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship at Frog Hollow Golf Club in Middletown, Delaware on Monday and Tuesday. The Devils finished ninth amongst the 11 schools competing at the championship. Monday's first round was postponed because of wind and rain, so 36 holes were played on Tuesday. USP shot 354 for the first 18 and finished the day with a score of 337 on the second 18 for a total score of 691 and a ninth place finish, 25 strokes behind eighth place Felician College (661). Post University captured its fourth consecutive CACC title with a score of 568. Nyack College and goldey Beacom College tied for second place with 596 and Wilmington University was fourth with 597. Post's David McGregor was the individual champion with a 5-under score of 137. Junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) was the Devils top shooter in the tournament, scoring an 80 in the first round and an 81 in the second for a two-round total of 161. Cahayla finished tied for 31st place amongst the 52 golfers competing. Sophomore Jason Franck (Twin Valley High School/ Elverson, Pa.) finished eight strokes behind Cahayla with a two-round total of 169, placing him 37th overall. Freshmen Michael Farsetta (Clarkstown South HS/New City, N.Y.) and Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa) rounded out the Devils final two scorers in the tournament. Farsetta had a total score of of 182 and finished tied for 42nd place. Cliggett shook off his first round score of 96 and shot 87 in the second round to finish with a score of 183, placing 44th. Freshman Stephanie Chen (John P. Stevens HS/Edison, N.J.) rounded out the USP competitors with a two-round total of 184 to place 46th overall. The Devils finished the season with a 10-20 record. Devils Place Third in Quad Match at Island Green (4/9/09) The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia golf team hosted a quad match on Wednesday afternoon at Island Green Country Club involving a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate conference teams, Nyack College and Caldwell College along with Arcadia University. The USP golfers placed third amongst the four teams competing, falling to the two CACC schools while defeating Arcadia. Nyack College finished first with a score of 312, followed by Caldwell's score of 329. The Devils placed third with a score of 356, narrowly defeating Arcadia University who finished with a score of 359. Nyack's four scorers held four of the top six places, led by Joe Lee's three-over par round of 75. John Driver finished tied for third with a score of 78 and Inigo Beltrain and Joao Gil were fifth and sixth respectively with scores of 78 and 79. USP's top finisher, junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) placed eighth overall with a score of 83. Freshman Michael Farsetta (Clarkstown South HS/New City, N.Y.) finished one stroke behind Cahayla, shooting an 84 to finish tied for ninth place. Freshman Stephanie Chen (John P. Stevens HS/Edison, N.J.) shot 90 to finis in a tie for 13th place. Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) rounded out the Devils scorers with an 18th place finish and a score of 99. Cahayla and Chen recorded the only two birdies on the afternoon by USP players. Cahayla birdied the par four first hole while Chen got hers at the par four 17th. Caldwell College, the second place team got a second place finish from Dan Garcia who shot a five-over par 77. Randy Kurzinsky was seventh with a score of 80. Brian Lyster (84) and Kyle Wiederman (87) finished tied for ninth and 11th place respectively. Arcadia's Kevin Gallagher was the Knights lone finisher in the top ten, finishing tied for third with a score of 78. The Devils return to action on Saturday, April 12, 2009 when the compete at the ACE Club for the final time this season. Devils Place Fourth in Quad Match at ACE Club (4/5/09) Weather played a factor on Saturday as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed golf team placed fourth in a quad match hosted by Philadelphia University at the ACE Club in Philadelphia. Swarthmore College finished finished first with a score of 332, followed by DeSales University at 357. Host Philadelphia University was third with a score of 362 followed by the Devils at 372. With the fourth place finish, the Devils record now stands at 9-15 on the season. Wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour played into the high scores during the match. Swarthmore's David Lau had the best score on the afternoon, a ten-over-par 82. Lau's three teammates, Paul Weston (tied- 2nd place), Michael Bernsuker (tied-2nd place) and Alex Nichamin (tied- 4th place) followed with scores of 83, 83 and 84 respectively to give the Garnet a 25 stroke victory. The Garnet's fifth golfer Kelly Schoolmeester shot 85 (6th place). USP's top finisher was freshman Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa). Cliggett shot 87 on the afternoon to place ninth overall amongst the 20 golfers competing. Junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) finished in 12th place with an 18-over-par score of 90. Right behind Cahayla in 13th place was sophomore Jason Franck (Twin Valley High School/ Elverson, Pa.) with a score of 92. The Devils final two golfers junior Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) and freshman Ryan DeLorraine (Hempfield HS/Lancaster, Pa.) both finished with identical scores of 103 to finish tied for 18th place. Host Philadelphia University's top golfer was P.J. O'Brien. O'Brien finished tied for 4th place with a score of 84. Teammate Brad Krohl shot 86 for 7th place overall. DeSales' Mike Felker finished tied with Krohl with a score of 86 and teammates Matt Mottola and Ken Engel rounded out the top ten finishers with scores of 88. The Devils return to action on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 when they host a quad match at Island Green Country Club starting at 1:00 p.m. Conference foes Chestnut Hill College and Nyack College will be participating as will Arcadia University. Golf Team Places Second at Eastern University Tri-Match (3/30/09) Two days after their third place finish at their last match, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia golf team took to the links of St. David's Country Club for a Tri-Match against Eastern University and Arcadia University. The Devils lost to host Eastern while defeating Arcadia. The Devils shot 340 on the afternoon to finish six strokes behind Eastern's 334. Arcadia shot 372. The Devils now have a record of 9-12 on the season. Sophomore Jason Franck (Twin Valley High School/ Elverson, Pa.) finished one stroke behind co-medalist's Drew Krupp (79) and Adam Rogers(79) of Eastern with a score of 80. Franck's score included birdies on the par four fourth and 18th holes and five pars. Junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) was two strokes behind Franck with a score of 82, parring nine of the 18 holes and placing fourth overall USP's final two scorers each shot an 89 to tie for seventh place overall. Freshman Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa) opened with a birdie three on the first hole and parred seven of the remaining 17 holes. Fellow freshman Michael Farsetta (Clarkstown South HS/New City, N.Y.) had a birdie on the par five 16th hole while parring six other holes to fill his scorecard. Junior Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) was the Devils fifth golfer on the afternoon, shooting a 98. Eastern rounded out their top four with Jeff Loesser (84) and Nick Agazarian (92). Arcadia was led by Kevin Gallagher's score of 83. Russell Schneider (92), Steve Sharp (95) and Josh Salzman (102) rounded out the Arcadia finishers. The Devils return to action on Saturday April 4, 2009 at the ACE Club in Philadelphia for the second of three weekend dates hosted by Philadelphia University. USP Finishes in Third Place at Philadelphia University Invitational (3/28/09) The ACE Club in Philadelphia was the site of the USP golf team's latest match as the competed in the four-team Philadelphia University Invitational on Saturday. The Devils placed third amongst the four teams competing. Goldey Beacom College placed first in the event with a score of 308. Caldwell College followed with a score of 325. USP shot 340 and host Philadelphia University placed fourth with a score of 362. The third place finish gives the University of the Sciences golf team an 8-11 overall record. Junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) and sophomore Jason Franck (Twin Valley High School/ Elverson, Pa.) were the Devils top two shooters, carding identical scores of 81 to finish in a three way tie for seventh place and six strokes behind medalist Rob Hunt of Goldey Beacom College. Freshman Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa) finished two strokes behind Cahayla and Franck with a score of 83 to place tenth overall. Junior Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) rounded out the Devils four scorers with a score of 95 (18th place). USP's fifth golfer on the afternoon, Tony Vanetesse (James Buchanan HS/ Chambersburg, Pa.), also shot a 95 to finish tied for 18th place. The Lightning of Goldey Beacom has three of the top four individuals at the match, led by Hunt's three-over par 75. Caldwell's Randy Kurzinsky finished one stroke behind Hunt with a score of 76 as did Eric Tammsalu of Goldey Beacom. Tyler Harman of Goldey Beacom was two shots off the pace with a score of 77 and teammate Justin Grossman rounded out the Lightning scorers with a round of 80 (6th place). Caldwell's Dan Garcia finished fifth with a score of of 78, followed by Brian Luyster (84, 11th place) and Chris Parker (87, 13th place). Host Philadelphia University';s top golfer was P.J. O'Brien who shot 85 and finished in 12th place. PU's Brad Krohl was six strokes behind O'Brien with a score of 91. Joe Baricelli (92, 16th place) and Russell Pierson (94, 17th place) rounded out the Rams top four scorers. The Devils are back on the links today, Monday March 30, 2009 when they participate in the Eastern University Invitational at St. David's Country Club in St. David's, Pennsylvania. Devils Place Third in Match at Rolling Green (3/24/09) The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia golf team competed in a five team match hosted by Swarthmore College on Monday at Rolling Green Golf Club, placing third behind Eastern University and host Swarthmore. The Devils shot 354 to finish 34 strokes behind Swarthmore College and ten strokes behind second place Eastern University. USP finished ahead of Richard Stockton College (369) and Arcadia University (384). USP's record now stands at 6-8 on the season. Leading the way for the Devils was junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) . Cahayla shot an 80 to finish in fourth place overall, five strokes behind medallist Paul Weston of Swarthmore who shot 75 and three strokes behind second place finishers Michael Bernasek of Swarthmore and Kevin Gallagher of Arcadia who each shot 77. Sophomore Jason Franck (Twin Valley High School/ Elverson, Pa.) followed Cahayla with a score of 88, finishing in tenth place overall. Freshman Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa) and Stephanie Chen (John P. Stevens HS/Edison, N.J.) rounded out the Devils four scorers. Cliggett shot 92 and finished tied for 15th place while Chen shot 94 to finish tied for 19th place. Sophomore Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) also participated in the match, shooting 95. USP returns to action with a home match on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Island Green Country Club against Chestnut Hill College and Nyack College. Devils Open Spring Season with Win over Chestnut Hill (3/19/09) Junior Scott Cahayla earned medallist honors as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia golf team opened the spring portion of their season with a 347-372 win over Chestnut Hill College on Thursday. The win ups the Devils record to 4-6. Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) shot a five-over 77 which included birdies on the par five 2nd and 18th holes and a birdie on the par four 6th. Finishing in second place was freshman Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa) with a score of 80. Freshman Stephanie Chen (John P. Stevens HS/Edison, N.J.) and junior Michael D'Uva rounded out the Devils four scorers. Chen shot 91 to finish in sixth place while D'Uva finished in ninth place with a score of 99. Freshman Ryan DeLorraine (Hempfield HS/Lancaster, Pa.) was USP's fifth player and finished the afternoon with a score of 101. Five golfers also shot exhibition during the match, led by sophomore Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) and junior Nick Willey (Shenendehowa HS/Clifton Park, N.Y.) . Patel shot 83 while Willey, in his golf team debut, shot 97. The Devils return to action on Monday, March 23, 2009 when they play in a five team match at Rolling Green Golf Club. Swarthmore College is the host. Rams Defeat Devils at ACE Club (10/24/08) The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia closed out the fall portion of their season on Thursday, losing to Philadelphia University 333-368 at the ACE Club in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. The loss drops the Devils record to 3-6. Junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) earned medallist honors, shooting a five-over par 77 on the afternoon. Four Philadelphia University golfers followed behind Cahayla with P.J. O'Brien leading the way with a score of 79. Phil Dougherty was third overall with a score of 81 followed by Meghan Kane (85) and Brad Koehl (88). Freshman Patrick Cliggett (Pennridge HS/Perkasie, Pa) was the Devils second finisher with a score of 93. Sophomores Tony Vanetesse (James Buchanan HS/ Chambersburg, Pa.) and Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) followed with identical scores of 99 to round out the Devils top four scorers. Sophomore Eric Wagner also shot a 106 on the afternoon. Devils Third in Tri-Match at Island Green (10/9/08) The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia mixed golf team hosted their first match of the 2008-09 season Thursday afternoon at Island Green Country Club in northeast Philadelphia, placing third amongst the three teams competing. The Devils finished with a score of 371. Caldwell College won the match with a score of 317 while Felician College was second with a score of 347. Junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) was the top finisher for the Devils with a 12 over par score of 84. Caldwell College's Dan Garcia took medallist honors with a score of 76 as the cougars placed four players in the top five overall. Felician's Joe Leardo was second overall with a score of 77. Senior Michael Moll (Wilson Area HS/Easton, Pa.) and freshman Patrick Cliggett were the next two scorers for USP shooting identical rounds of 93. Sophomore Anuj Patel (St. Mary's Ryken HS /Leonardtown, Md.) rounded out the Devils scorers shooting 101 on the afternoon. Senior Lauren Wallis (Carbondale Area HS/Carbondale, Pa.) also shot a round of 101. Franck Earns Medallist Honors as Devils Place Third in Quad Match (10/7/08) University of the Sciences in Philadelphia sophomore Jason Franck outshot 19 other players to earn medalist honors at a quad match hosted by Philadelphia University at the Ace Club Monday afternoon in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. Franck's (Twin Valley High School/ Elverson, Pa.) score of 79 helped lead USP to a third place finish with a team score of 346, seven strokes behind host Philadelphia University (339) and two behind Felician College (344). Chestnut Hill was the fourth school competing and finished with a team score of 417. The Devils are now 3-3 on the season. It was Franck's teammate junior Scott Cahayla (Lakeland Regional/ Ringwood, NJ) who had the best front nine score, shooting an even par 36 along with Felician's Joe Peters. Jason was three strokes behind at 39. Franck then shot the best score of the afternoon on the back nine, a four-over par 40 to finish with 79, beating Philadelphia University's Brad Krohl by one stroke. Cahayla finished the back nine shooting 45 to finish two strokes off the pace with a score of 81. Peters of Felician also finished the day with a score of 81. Rounding out the Devils top four scorers were sophomore Tony Vanetesse (James Buchanan HS/ Chambersburg, Pa.) and freshman Pat Cliggett. Vanetesse finished in 12th place with a score of 90 while Cliggett was 15th with a score of 96. USP will be returning to action on Thursday, October 9, 2008 when they host a match at Island Green Country Club at 2:00 p.m. |
