and Women’s Tennis Teams
Earn CACC Team Sportsmanship Awards
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, at the awards ceremonies following the conclusion of the Cross Country and Women’s tennis Championships on Saturday, announced that the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Men’s Cross Country team and USP’s Women’s Tennis Team were awarded the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award for 2007 in their respective sports.
The CACC Sportsmanship Award is given to the team in each sponsored conference sport that best exemplifies the spirit of athletic competition and sportsmanship and is voted on by the head coaches in each sport.
The 2007 CACC Team Sportsmanship Award marks the second consecutive year that the men’s cross country team has earned this award. In Saturday’s championship race, the USP men placed third overall, their best finish at the CACC meet since 2000, and four places higher than they did in 2006. This year’s men’s team had one of the best seasons in the history of the program, never finishing lower than fourth place in their six invitational races, and had four top three finishes prior to this year’s conference championship meet.
USP’s women’s tennis team also received the CACC Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year. The team qualified for the CACC playoffs, losing in the semi-final round to Philadelphia University. The Devils finished the season with a 7-4 overall record and a 4-2 conference record. Their seven wins are the second most in a season in the history of the program, surpassed only by their 2005 8-7 record.
Prior to this season, teams from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia have won the CACC Team Sportsmanship award a total of six times. The women’s cross country team won the award three straight times from 2001-2003 while the men’s baseball team earned the award in 2003. The women’s tennis team and the men’s cross country team won the award in 2006.
