Athletic Department Announces their Men’s and Women’s Basketball Schedules
for 2009-2010
Division I opponent highlights the men’s schedule
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia athletic department has released the 2009-2010 schedules for their men’s and women’s basketball teams.
A game against a Division I opponent highlights the USP men’s basketball schedule as the Devils are set to take on Brown University at the Palestra on Thanksgiving weekend. The game is part of the Philly Hoop Group Classic and will be part of four games played at the Palestra on Friday, November 27, 2009. The game will most likely be part of the afternoon doubleheader. The last time the Devils faced a Division I opponent and played a game at the Palestra was during the 2004-05 season when the Devils played an exhibition game against Drexel University prior to the start of the season and later faced Philadelphia University at the Palestra.
Both squads kick off the season with a road non-conference contest at West Chester University on November 17, 2009 before returning to the Bobby Morgan Arena for their home opener against Millersville University.
The men and the women face three more Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foes in December before beginning conference play, traveling to East Stroudsburg and Kutztown University on December 1st and 5th respectively and hosting Cheyney University on December 9th. The men have an additional home game sandwiched in between the two road contests as they host Lincoln University on December 3rd.
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play begins for both teams on December 12th at the Bobby Morgan Arena as the squads host Wilmington University. The women, under first year head coach Paul Stadelberger will face a tough CACC schedule as they play each of their six southern division opponents twice including perennial powerhouse Holy Family University, home and away and are on the road against four of their seven CACC north division games for a total of 19 CACC games. The Devils finished third in the CACC southern division last year, losing to area rival Philadelphia University in the opening round of the playoffs, their second straight first round playoff exit.
The men, on the other hand, are looking to get back into the post-season picture after missing a post-season berth for the first time in 26 seasons. USP’s men’s team, under the guidance of veteran head coach David Pauley, has a similar CACC schedule facing their five southern division opponents twice and their seven northern division foes once for a total of 17 CACC games.
All of the CACC conference games, both home and away are doubleheaders with the women playing first, followed by the men. Both teams also have three non-conference doubleheaders in January and February with the Devils playing home and home against the University of the District of Columbia and a road game at Columbia Union College.
CACC playoffs will begin on Tuesday, March 2, 2010.
