USP Athletic Department Announces their Fall Sports Schedules
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia athletic department has released the schedules for the fall sports of men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball and women’s tennis.
The schedules can be found on the USP Athletic website at http://www.usp.edu/athletics/schedule.shtml
The men’s and women’s cross country teams will again kick off the Devils 2009-2010 campaign, competing at the Delaware Valley College Invitational in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 5, 2009. Last year’s third place finish by the men’s team set the tone for the season as the men’s harriers became one of the two most successful USP teams during the 08-09 academic year, placing 2nd at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championships and 16th at the NCAA regionals (their best finish ever in both races). With over 20 schools entered in this year’s race, the Devils hope to again set the tone for the season as they look to improve upon their post season finishes and bring home the first CACC men’s championship in school history.
The USP women’s cross country team will bring a wealth of experience with all nine runners from last year returning. Along with a pair of promising newcomers, the Devils hope to build upon this year’s DVC Invitational race as the season progresses and improve 2008’s sixth place conference finish and 19th place finish at the NCAA regionals.
USP will again co-host with Philadelphia University, the CACC Championship meet at Belmont Plateau on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Starting times are forthcoming.
The women’s volleyball team has a tough 19-game conference schedule which include home and home matches against all their southern division rivals, including three-time defending champion Georgian Court and 2008 CACC runner-up Philadelphia University. The Devils open the season with a pair of non-conference matches at Southern Connecticut State University where they will take on Queens College and the host Owls on Saturday, September 12, 2009. The Devils will also face Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rivals West Chester University and Millersville University along with another Northeast-10 conference member LeMoyne College. The Devils hope to return to the playoffs after having missed the post-season last year despite having a 9-9 conference record. The CACC playoffs start on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 and feature the top four teams from each division.
The women’s tennis team also looks to improve upon its fifth place CACC finish last season and return to the playoffs. USP starts things off with a conference match against defending champion Philadelphia University on September 12, 2009. USP then competes in individual competition at the ITA regionals at Chestnut Hill the following weekend. Seven of USP’s remaining eight matches will be against conference foes with their lone non-conference match against West Chester on September 25, 2009.
In addition to the four fall sports, the USP men’s tennis and mixed golf teams will also see limited action in September and October as they tune up for their respective spring seasons.. The men’s tennis team will take on LaSalle University and West Chester University in addition to competing at the ITA regionals. The mixed golf team will compete at the Wilmington University Invitational at Frog Hollow Golf Club on September 13, 2009 along with three other competitions in the month of October.
