Ten USP Student-Athletes Named to CACC Spring All- Academic Team
Ebersole, Tobin and Wallis become Three-time Honorees

New Haven, Conn. (June 11, 2009) – Ten student-athletes from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia were named to the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Spring All-Academic Team announced by the conference office. USP’s ten athletes were among the 75 total student-athletes from the 13 conference schools earning a place on the list.

To qualify for the honor, recipients must have maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, participated in a Spring CACC sport, and been at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Among the conference honorees were 20 repeat selections while nine student-athletes were named for the third time in their careers.

Four of the repeat selections came from the University of the Sciences, with three seniors earning the honor for the third time; softball team members Brittany Ebersole (Cumberland Valley HS/Camp Hill, Pa.) and Ashley Tobin (Warwick HS/Lititz, Pa) and golfer Lauren Wallis (Carbondale Area HS/Carbondale, Pa.).

Ebersole, a third baseman, recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with the highest grade point average in her major of pharmaceutical chemistry, 3.89 Tobin split time between third base and catching this season and recently completed her second professional year and fourth overall in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program and has a 3.64 grade point average. Wallis, the third three-time honoree also has completed her second professional year and fourth overall in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program and has a 3.595 grade point average.

USP’s fourth repeat selection is junior softball pitcher Erin Degnan (Gwynedd Mercy Academy/ Doylestown, Pa). This spring, Degnan completed her first professional year and third overall in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program while sporting a 3.59 grade point average.

Two additional USP softball team members earned CACC All-Academic Team honors for the first time, giving the Devils a total of five softball players on the team. Junior Samantha Tu (Bensalem HS/Trevose, Pa.) is an occupational therapy major at the university and recently completed her third year in the institution’s five-year Masters of Occupational Therapy program with an overall g.p.a. of 3.52. Sophomore Dayna Phillips (Cumberland Regional HS/Rosenhayn, N.J.) is a biology/pre-med major and sports a 3.74 g.p.a. Phillips was also recently named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team for women’s softball.

Three men’s tennis players and one golfer round out USP’s ten honorees. Junior Ricardo Martins (Idegeio Pentagono/Sao Paolo, Brazil) is a physical therapy major who has completed his third year overall as part of the institution’s six-year Doctor of Physical Therapy program., holding down a 3.54 g.p.a. Fellow junior Daniel Rubin (Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) has completed his first professional year and third overall in the University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program with a 3.62 grade point average. Sophomore Francisco Garcia (Don Cesar Gascon/Balcarce Buenos Aires, Argentina) rounds out the three men’s tennis players named. Garcia, a computer science major, has an overall g.p.a. of 3.82.

Golfer Tony Vanetesse (James Buchanan HS/Chambersburg, Pa.) rounds out the USP honorees. Vanetesse, a sophomore, is a microbiology major with a 3.75 grade point average.

The ten USP athletes earning CACC Spring All-Academic honors during the 08-09 season, join six others from the CACC Fall and Winter Academic Teams to give the Devils a total of 16 athletes honored this academic year. A total of 47 different student athletes from the University of the Sciences have earned CACC All-Academic honors a total of 87 times since the program began in 2004. Twenty-three of these 47 are repeat selections with 13 of those earning All-Academic honors three times and one earning All-Academic honors six times (two sports) over the past five-plus years.
