Curry and LaRocco Named
to 2008 Daktronics Northeast Region Baseball Team
Philadelphia, Pa. (5/14/08) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia senior outfielder Michael Curry and freshman designated hitter Peter LaRocco have been named today to the 2008 Daktronics Northeast Region Baseball Team as second team selections. The All-Northeast Region teams are chosen by the sports information directors from the Northeast-10 Conference, East Coast Conference and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
Curry (St. Pius X High School/Collegeville, Pa.) and LaRocco (Gloucester Catholic High School/Sewell, N.J.) become the first USP baseball players to earn any All-Region honors since the 2003 season when Vincent Madaline ’05 and Michael Montanero ’07 were named to the NAIA Region X All-Region Team.
In 2008, Curry became the first USP baseball player to hit over .400 since the 2001 season. Michael set a school record with 61 hits this season while hitting a robust .415. Playing in 26 of the Devils 27 CACC games, Curry performed even better at the plate, banging out 42 hits in 92 at-bats for a .457 league-leading Conference-only batting average, 37 points better than his nearest competitor. Overall, Curry finished second in the league in batting and was tied for third in the league the league with 61 hits. Michael is also third in the league in on-base percentage (.480) and tenth in slugging percentage (.490). The former Saint Pius X High School athlete finished the year leading the Devils in batting average, hits, on-base percentage, slugging average, games started (44), runs scored (24), stolen bases (4) and was second on the team in RBI (25).
LaRocco, one of just three freshmen to earn first or second team all-region honors, played in 44 of the Devils 45 games, starting 42. The former Gloucester Catholic High School star led the Devils in doubles with 10 and was third on the team in hits (35), RBI’s (22) and slugging% (.393) while batting .259. Pete’s 10 doubles this season is the fourth best single season total in school history.
LaRocco, a pharmacy major pursing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at USP has completed his first season of play for the Devils. Curry has completed his fourth and final season as a member of the USP baseball team. Academically, he is in his second professional year as a student in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program.
