Curry
Named to CACC Baseball All-Conference Team
New Haven, Conn. (5/8/08) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia senior outfielder Michael Curry was named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) All-Conference Baseball Team as a First Team selection as announced today by the conference office. The All-CACC teams are chosen by the league’s ten coaches.
Curry (St. Pius X High School/Collegeville, Pa.) becomes the first USP baseball player to earn First Team All-Conference honors since the institution joined the CACC in 1999. USP has had four other players named as second team selections over the past five seasons.
The senior outfielder also became the first USP baseball player to hit over .400 since the 2001 season. Curry set a school record with 61 hits this season while hitting a robust .415. Playing in 26 of the Devils 27 CACC games, Curry performed even better at the plate, banging out 42 hits in 92 at-bats for a .457 league-leading Conference-only batting average. Michael’s .457 conference-only mark was 37 points better in CACC games than his nearest competitor, CACC Player of the Year Cody Levins of Nyack College (.420).
Overall, Curry is second in the league in batting behind Levins’ .433 average and leads the league with 61 hits. Michael is also fourth in the league in on-base percentage (.480) and tenth in slugging percentage (.490). Curry finished the year leading the Devils in batting average, hits, on-base percentage, slugging average, games started (44), runs scored (24), stolen bases (4) and RBI (25).
Curry closed out his career with a two consecutive three-hit games against Dominican College to raise his career hit total to 101 in just 102 games played, becoming just the 10th player in school history to record 100 career hits. His .344 career batting average is eighth best in the history of the program.
The former Saint Pius X High School athlete has completed his fourth and final season as a member of the USP baseball team. Academically, Curry is in his second professional year as a student in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program.
