the Devils to 3-10 overall. Millersville improves to 3-17 overall.
Millersville
got on the scoreboard first, with three hits in the second inning,
including a double and a triple to take a 3-0 lead. The Devils got
one back in the top of the third as Rich
Cipoletti (Sr., Half Hollow Hills West HS/Dix Hills, N.Y.)
led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on Phil
Maher's (Jr., Norristown HS/Norristown, Pa.)
ground out. Mark Forbes (Fr., Salesianum
HS/Hockessin, Del.) then hit a sacrifice fly
to right field allowing Cipoletti to score
putting the Devils on the board, 3-1.
The Marauders
took advantage of two USP errors in the bottom of the third, scoring
five times to take an 8-1 lead and chasing USP starter Michael
DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.)
in the process. Millersville added a solo run in the fourth inning
and three more in the fifth to take a 12 -1 lead heading into the
top of the sixth inning.
Forbes
singled to lead off the top of the sixth and DeVincenzo,
now the designated hitter, hit his first home run of the season
to make the score 12-3. The score remained 12-3 until the Marauders
struck for four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, again taking
advantage of a pair of fielding errors by the Devils to take a 16-3
lead.
USP made one
last push in their final at-bat. Justin
DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.)
doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters and two outs later,
Chris Pino (Jr., Hazleton Area HS/West
Hazleton, Pa.) reached on a fielding error,
allowing David Kittle (So., Camden Catholic HS/Maple
Shade, N.J.), who was running for DeVincenzo
to score. Chris Longo (Jr., Cherry Hill
East HS/Cherry Hill, N.J.) followed with a
single to score Pino. Cipoletti
then got his second hit of the game, a single to advance James
Battaglia (Jr., Southern Regional HS/ Waretown, N.J.),
who was running for Longo to third. Battaglia
came around to score on Maher's second
hit of the game, a double to right center, making the score 16-6
before Forbes ended the game by flying
out to center field.
Michael
DeVincenzo took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.
DeVincenzo pitched 2 2/3 innings giving
up eight runs (three earned) while striking out three. Jesse Shablin
(1-2) picked up the win for Millersville, who banged out 20 total
hits (11 for extra bases). Maher and Cipoletti
each had two hits for the Devils who produced a total of 10 hits
on the afternoon.
The Devils
return home to take on Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Richie Ashburn
Field in Philadelphia. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.
Devils,
Thompson Shutout Deacons (3/26/07)
Gary
Thompson pitched a complete game shutout and Chris
Longo drove in three runs as the University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia won their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
(CACC) opener, defeating Bloomfield College 5-0 this afternoon at
Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia.
The
Devils improve to 3-9 overall and are 1-0 in CACC games. The Deacons
fall to 5-12 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Thompson
(Fr, Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.) allowed just
three hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking one one in
evening his record at 2-2 on the season. USP banged out six hits
with Longo’s (Jr., Cherry Hill East HS/Cherry Hill,
N.J.) bases-clearing double in the seventh the big
blow of the afternoon. Phil Maher (Jr., Norristown HS/Norristown,
Pa.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Thompson
struck out the side in the Deacons half of the first and Maher
got the Devils on the board in the bottom half of the inning, leading
off with a double and later scoring on a passed ball to give USP
a 1-0 lead. Thompson retired the first
eight batters he faced until Edwin Pagan singled in the top of the
third with two out. The freshman southpaw did not allow another
base runner until a seventh inning single by Mike Naples who was
erased when Eric Tanis hit into a fielders choice. Tanis was replaced
on base by Will Mendez who was thrown out trying to steal second.
to eliminate any further Bloomfield threat.
Justin
DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.) hit
a one out single in the bottom of the seventh to set the table for
the Devils. Michael Curry (Jr., St. Pius X HS/Collegeville,
Pa.) and Ryan Challender (Fr., G.A.M.P./
Upper Darby, Pa.) were hit by pitches to load the
bases before DeVincenzo was forced out
at home on Chris Pino's (Jr., Hazleton Area HS/West
Hazleton, Pa.) fielder's choice. Longo
then delivered a long double, clearing the bases to give the Devils
a 4-0. Longo then stole third but was
thrown out at the plate when a pitch by Bloomfield's Joseph O'Donnell
got away from the catcher but not far enough as O'Donnell was able
to tag Longo out at the plate to end the
inning.
After
Thompson pitched out of trouble in the
top of the eighth ( a double, walk and a balk). Michael
DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.) gave
the Devils an added insurance run with a two-out single up the middle
scoring Maher, who singled two batters
earlier. Thompson then pitched a 1-2-3
inning in the ninth, striking out Mendez for his tenth strikeout
of the afternoon to end the game.
The
Devils return to action on Saturday, March 31, 2007 when they take
on Dominican College in a CACC doubleheader at Richie Ashburn Field
starting at noon.

Open Season with Split against Columbia Union (2/12/07)
The
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men’s baseball team opened
their 2007 campaign yesterday with a doubleheader split against
Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland.
Yesterday’s
games mark the earliest opening games ever for a USP baseball team.
The Devils won the first game, 5-4 and lost the second 8-4. The
win was only the Devils second opening game win in the past 10 season,
with the other coming last season.
Gary
Thompson (Fr, Timber Creek HS/Sicklerville, N.J.),
making his collegiate debut, pitched six solid innings to earn the
win in the opener. Thompson gave up just
four hits and two unearned runs while striking out six and walking
one. Michael DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains,
Pa.) came in to pitch to five batters in the seventh,
giving up an earned run to earn the save.
The
Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Michael
Kleinschmidt (So., St. Mark’s HS/Newark, Del.) reached
first on a dropped third strike, advanced to third on Justin
DeVincenzo’s (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.) double
and scored on a wild pitch. DeVincenzo
later scored on a groundout by his brother Michael.
USP
gave one back in the bottom of the first, but took a 3-1 lead in
the top half of the second on an RBI single from Chris
Pino (Jr., Hazleton Area HS/West Hazleton, Pa.), scoring
Dustin Gill (Fr., Delone Catholic HS/Hanover, Pa.)
who reached on an error and stole second. The Devils
added their fourth run in the third inning on consecutive singles
by Michael DeVincenzo, Michael Curry (Jr., St. Pius
X HS/Collegeville, Pa.) and Mark Forbes
(Fr., Salesianum HS/Hockessin, Del.) and a sacrifice
fly from Gill.
An
unearned run in the bottom of the fourth made the score 4-2 in favor
of the Devils. The score was still 4-2 going into the sixth inning
when Rich Cipoletti (Sr., Half Hollow Hills West HS/Dix
Hills, N.Y.) led off with a double and scored on Kleinschmidt’s
single to make the score 5-2.
Brandon
Boucher (Fr., Washington Township HS/Sewell, N.J.)
relieved Thompson for the seventh inning
and walked the leadoff batter. Michael DeVincenzo then
relieved Boucher, giving up just one hit,
a triple, and a run-scoring wild pitch before recording three straight
outs to preserve the 5-4 win for the Devils.
Phil
Maher (Jr., Norristown HS/Norristown, Pa.) got the
start in the second game. Maher pitched
five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts,
leaving the game trailing 2-1. The Devils manufactured their lone
run in the fourth when Pino led off the
inning with an infield single, moved to second on a throwing error
and to third on a wild pitch. Pino then
scored on Chris Longo’s (Jr., Cherry Hill East HS/Cherry
Hill, N.J.) sacrifice fly.
With
the score still, 2-1, Dan Storms (So., East Brunswick
HS/East Brunswick, N.J.) relieved Maher
to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Storms
gave up a single, hit a batter and got two outs before issuing a
walk to load the bases. Two errors then opened the floodgates for
the Pioneers as they scored six times in the inning to take an 8-1
lead as the Devils came up for their final at-bat.
Brian
Scott (So., Cornwall Central HS/Cornwall, N.Y.) led
off the inning, reaching second on a two base error by Columbia
Union’s shortstop. Scott scored on Cipoletti’s single. Dave
Kittle (So., Camden Catholic HS/Maple Shade, N.J.)
singled and Ryan Challender’s (Fr., G.A.M.P./ Upper
Darby, Pa.) sacrifice advanced both runners. Cipoletti
and Kittle then scored on Pino’s
two-out single to make the score 8-4 before Longo
popped out to end the game. Maher (0-1)
took the loss for the Devils.
The
Devils will not play again until they face Gannon University on
March 3rd at the Gene Cusic Tournament in Fort Myers, Florida.
