Peyton named CACC Baseball Rookie of the Week

New Haven, Conn. (4/6/09) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia freshman pitcher Luke Peyton has been chosen as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s baseball Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 5, 2009.

Peyton (Haddonfield High School/Haddonfield, N.J.) earned his first collegiate win this week and did not allow an earned run in either of his two relief appearances as the Devils recorded a 1-2 record for the week.

The right-handed thrower entered Saturday’s first game against Bloomfield in the sixth inning with two runners on base. The two runners eventually scored on an infield error, but Peyton got out of the jam with a strikeout and two groundouts. Luke pitched four innings of relief, striking out two and allowing just two walks to earn his first collegiate win in 11 appearances as a Devil.

Earlier in the week, Peyton came on in relief with the Devils trailing 13-5 against Wilmington University. Luke recorded a career high eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched, allowing just three hits, two singles and a double while giving up an unearned run.

For the week, Peyton did not give up a single earned run in 9 2/3 innings of relief work, striking out 10 batters, walking three and holding hitters to just a .100 batting average (3-for-30). Left handed hitters did not get a single hit off Peyton, going 0-for-6 on the week.

The former Haddonfield High School athlete is in his first season of play for the Devils. Peyton is a pharmacy major at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
