McCauley and Forbes Named to All-CACC Baseball Team

Named Honorable Mention; Team earns CACC Sportsmanship Award
New Haven, Conn (5/5/09) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men’s baseball players Peter McCauley and Mark Forbes have been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Conference Men’s Baseball Team as announced today by the conference office. Both McCauley and Forbes were picked as second team selections. The voting is done by the league’s ten coaches. Freshman Luke Peyton was also selected to the team as an honorable mention choice.
In addition, the conference coaches voted the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia baseball team as the recipient of the 2009 Team Sportsmanship Award. The CACC Team Sportsmanship Award is given to the team in each sponsored conference sport that best exemplifies the spirit of athletic competition and sportsmanship. This is the second time the USP baseball team has won the CACC Sportsmanship award having earned the honor back in 2003.
McCauley (Northwestern Lehigh High School/New Tripoli, Pa.), a second baseman/pitcher, started in 41 games for the Devils. Peter led the team in hits with 42, the fifth highest single season total in the 109-year history of the program. The senior infielder also led the Devils with 20 RBI, 10 doubles, three home runs and 20 runs scored while batting .294 (2nd best on the team). He finished the season batting .390 against left handed pitching, .327 with runners in scoring position (RISP) and .342 with runners on base. McCauley also appeared in nine games as a pitcher, starting six and had an earned run average of 7.15 in 39 innings of work.
In the final game of McCauley’s career last week against Dominican College, the senior drove in two runs and scored the Devils final two runs of the season. His final career at-bat resulted in a two-run home run.
Forbes (Salesianum School/Hockessin, Del.), a catcher/designated hitter was named to the all-conference team as a utility player. Mark led the team in batting with a .304 average and was second on the team with 38 hits. In the field Forbes committed just four errors in 169 chances and three out 11 of 79 runners trying to steal a base. The junior catcher batted .316 with two-out and was second on the team with seven two-out RBI.
Peyton (Haddonfield High School/Haddonfield, N.J.) appeared in 18 games for the Devils, primarily as a reliever. Peyton recorded 59 strikeouts in a team-high 55 2/3 innings of work and had an earned run average of 4.85. In 2009, Luke held opposing batters to a .233 batting average.
The Devils finished the season with a 3-41 overall record and a 2-25 conference mark.
