Selected
to NCBWA Division II Northeast Region Team
Manchester, N.H. (5/25/08) – Good things come in ‘threes’, so the highly popular saying goes. The 2008 postseason has been very good to University of the Sciences in Philadelphia senior outfielder Michael Curry. Already named to the Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast Region Teams, Curry garnered his third All-Region honor when he was announced today as a second team selection on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Northeast Region Team.
Curry (St. Pius X High School/Collegeville, Pa.) becomes just one of five Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball players to earn three separate All-Region honors, joining Cody Levins of Nyack College; Tyler Mentzer of Philadelphia University, Robert Casal of Caldwell College and Tommy Maloney of Dominican College. Levins was a first team selection on all three region teams while Curry, Mentzer, Casal and Maloney earned second team honors on each of the three all-region teams.
Hitting .415 on the season, Curry finished second in the CACC in batting behind Levins’ .421 average. The senior outfielder recorded a 17-game hitting streak during the season and reached base safely in 42 of the 44 games he played. Michael also shattered the USP single season record for hits, recording 61 on the season, finishing fourth in the league
Amongst the league leaders, Curry also finished third in the league in on-base percentage (.480); tenth in slugging percentage (.490) and had the league’s top batting average in conference-only games (.457). The former Saint Pius X High School athlete ended the year leading the Devils in batting average, hits, on-base percentage, slugging average, games started (44), runs scored (24), stolen bases (4) and was second on the team in RBI (25).
Recording six hits in his final two games, Curry became just the 12th USP baseball player to record 100 career hits, finishing his career with 101. Michael’s .344 career batting average is eighth best in school history.
The former Saint Pius X High School athlete has completed his fourth and final season as a member of the USP baseball team. Academically, Curry is in his second professional year as a student in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program.
