Information for Prospective Peer Tutors
Tutoring is one of the more challenging and enjoyable part-time jobs on campus.
Student Academic Support Services (SASS) offers qualified students paid and flexible hours.
Who are the tutors?
We hire students with excellent organizational, interpersonal and
communication skills. Peer tutors are undergraduate students at
USP who have a minimum B+ in the course they tutor, and who have
received at least one faculty recommendation. In some cases, graduate
students and those with earned doctorate degrees may be tutors.

Sounds great! How do I become a tutor?
If you have the qualifications listed above, review the following:
- Complete a tutor
application and submit to 4140 Woodland Ave., or contact Student
Academic Support Services (SASS).
- Send the recommendation
form to your professor(s).
- A staff member will contact you to schedule an interview after
receiving your application.
- At the end of the interview you will be informed of your hiring
status. If selected, you will be scheduled for a new tutor training
session. The new tutor training must be completed as a prerequisite
before tutoring begins.
- A tutoring assignment can begin immediately after the training
session and completion of all forms for employment. Assignments
are contingent upon the number of tutoring requests received in
specific subjects.

Who are Lead Tutors?
Lead Tutors are peer tutors who have worked as a tutor for at least one year, and have received two hours of additional training. They are highly motivated and exceptional tutors. Occassionally they conduct new tutor training sessions, and act as mentors for other tutors. The Lead Tutors won a Dean’s Award for Outstanding Peer Mentors for 2003-2004 at the Leadership Recognition Banquet.

Training topics
Tutors are required to complete a minimum of 3 hours of training
per semester. Training topics and dates will be announced.
Training can also be completed with video tapes or on-line training modules.
