In the last four weeks of this one-year course, we
will trace the development of the self in the contemporary age.
We will analyze the transformation of the modern self from the beginning
of the 19th century to the present.
Three recurring themes crucial to the future of the
self provide resonance with the ten-week segments. These themes
are the Heroic Self and the Alienated Self; Technology and the Self;
and Self and Society.
All students will be engaged in this common unit of instruction.
The format will be discussion. Readings will be kept to an
absolute minimum to permit students to reflect on the connections
among the themes of the ten-week segments. Group projects
will be presented in the last week.
