Under Social Science Fundamental Requirements,
the instructions say "select two." Does it matter
which ones I take?
If you know the social science discipline in which you will be
taking your 'Advance Social Science' Core Distribution Requirement,
you must be sure to take the introductory level course which is
prerequisite for upper level courses. Check with your program director
to determine if there is a suggested course.
Are the Intellectual Heritage and Distribution
Requirements exactly the same for everyone?
All students are required to take six credits of Intellectual Heritage
and nine credits of Core Distribution Requirements (three credits
in World Cultures, History/Literature, and Advanced Social Sciences).
However, students have choices in the themes studied in Intellectual
Heritage and many elective options in all three areas of the Core
Distribution Requirements.
Can I choose any of the themed sections
in Intellectual Heritage, or are certain ones required by my major?
The choice of IH themes is determined by the student not by the
major. Students can select their preferred themes during the
preregistration process for the Fall semester of the second year.
While every effort is made to provide the student with her/his first
choice, schedule conflicts and class size may affect the section
which is assigned.
Does my major affect courses I must
take within each area of the three Core Distribution Requirements?
In most cases, the student is free to select any course to fulfill
the requirements in World Cultures, History/Literature and Advanced
Social Sciences. However, the student should check with the
program director to insure that the proper discipline/course is
being selected.
How does my major affect what I must
take in my Core Elective?
The course selected for the Core Elective must be outside of the
major and major requirements. The student is free to select
any course as long as any specified prerequisites have been met.
Yes. Scores of AP test results and official transcripts should
be submitted to the Admissions Office prior to matriculating.
The documents will be evaluated and the student will be advised
of any credits which are acceptable. After a student has enrolled,
requests to take courses at another institution must be approved
prior to taking such courses - contact the Dean of your college.
Is it possible for one course
to fulfill the requirements of more than one component of the Core?
In the "World Cultures" component of the Core Distribution
Requirement, some courses (ex. East Asian Civilization) are cross-listed
with other disciplines. In such instances, the student may
apply the course to a particular requirement; however, the student
cannot use the same course to fulfill more than one requirement.
While most of the Core components are applicable to all majors,
you should request the program director of the new major for an
evaluation of your record to determine if any additional work needs
to be done.
Read the statement (on the Core curriculum Brochure passed by Faculty
Council on August 18, 1997 and contact your advisor/program director.
