Learning Opportunities in Pre-Medical Education
Because of the excellent reputation of USP, the strength of our science curricula, and the personalized attention given to pre-med students, the percentage of USP applicants admitted to medical, dental or other health professional schools is very high. An array of learning opportunities supplements the exceptionally strong classroom experience.
Hands-On Learning
No matter what major you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to learn while you’re doing. It’s routine to engage in research as early as your freshman year. Collaborating with faculty, you’ll participate in discovery projects within your major.
Research studies and internships
Many of our pre-med students have participated in national studies and internships at premier research institutions and pharmaceutical labs. These experiences result in credentials that reflect the kinds of candidates medical schools are looking for.
With the second-largest concentration of health resources in the country at our doorstep, the opportunities for diverse experiences are enormous. The Philadelphia area is home to 115 hospitals, numerous advanced research institutions, 200 of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotech firms, and 135 medical manufacturers.
Volunteer opportunities
Your major may give you the advantage of an inside look into some of these successful, innovative science industries and healthcare institutions. You may even choose to volunteer at leading hospitals such as Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania—both within walking distance of the campus.
Real Work Experience
USP’s location in University City offers you an ideal environment to explore your career interests and gain true working experience. You’ll have access to:
- 115 hospitals
- 150 research laboratories
- 5 medical schools
- 2 schools of dentistry
- Schools of podiatry, optometry and veterinary medicine
- Dozens of community-based clinical sites
Twice the Education
As a pre-med student you’ll also have the option of pursuing double degrees. You may seek a double degree combining a basic science with a professional degree (such as physician assistant, physical therapy or medical technology), or in two basic sciences.
USP Pre-Medical Society
Involvement in the USP Pre-Medical Society lets you attend lectures and workshops, and participate in field trips to area professional schools, hospitals and medical museums. You’ll get a better idea of what it means to practice medicine in today’s world. And have the chance to get to know other pre-med students.
