Mission Statements
The mission of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration post-graduate residency training programs is to prepare Doctor of Pharmacy graduates to be independent practitioners of clinical pharmacy and to assume the roles and responsibilities for direct patient care.
The mission of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration post-graduate clinical research fellowship training programs is to prepare the pharmacy practitioner to become an independent clinical researcher.
The training programs are uniquely located within the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. This unique environment prepares the trainee to teach knowledge, skills and attitudes to Doctor of Pharmacy and other healthcare students in the classroom and patient care settings.
Residencies at USP
Post graduate year one of pharmacy residency training is an organized, directed program that builds upon knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities gained from an accredited pharmacy curriculum. The first-year residency program enhances general competencies in managing medication-use systems and supports optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients with a broad range of disease states.
While our post graduate training program not accredited through ASHP or reviewed by ACCP at this time, the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration is currently exploring the possibility of such approval/review of our programs. Programmatic goals and objectives may be found within each of our program descriptions and can be compared to those standards promoted by ASHP and ACCP.
Post Pharm.D. - Year 1 (PGY1) programs
Post graduate year one (PGY1) of pharmacy residency training is an organized, directed, accredited program that builds upon knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities gained from an accredited pharmacy curriculum. Pharmacy Practice Residency
The general pharmacy practice residency at PCP is designed to provide the opportunity to accelerate growth in direct patient care and in practice management beyond entry-level professional competence and to further the development of leadership skills that can be applied in any position and in any practice setting.

Medical Information and Education Residency
This dual-setting residency is organized to provide experiences leading to advanced professional skills in medical and scientific information for pharmacists wishing to pursue a career in drug information in the pharmaceutical industry or academic setting. Residents participate in didactic teaching at the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, PA. At Ortho Women’s Health & Urology, they will be an integral team member in Medical Information & Communications.

Post Pharm.D. - Year 2 (PGY2) programs
Post graduate year two (PGY2) of pharmacy residency training is an organized, directed program that builds upon the competencies established in postgraduate year one of residency training. The second-year residency program is focused in a specific area of practice. The PGY2 program increases the resident's depth of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities to raise the resident's level of expertise in medication therapy management and clinical leadership in the area of focus. In those practice areas where board certification exists, graduates are prepared to pursue such certification.
Cardiology Pharmacy Practice Residency
The PGY2 pharmacy residency in cardiology is designed to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalist practice to specialized practice focused on the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. Cardiology pharmacy residency graduates exhibit the characteristics of practice leaders. They possess advanced skills to identify the pharmacotherapy and medication-use training needs of other health care professionals caring for individuals with cardiovascular disease; and to deliver effective training to those health care professionals and patients. They are experienced in writing about and presenting on cardiology pharmacy-related topics. The USP PGY2 resident in cardiology pharmacy practice also gains pharmacy student teaching experience and will complete a research project.

Pediatric Pharmacy Practice Residency
This twelve-month residency is directed at highly motivated individuals who primarily seek to gain clinical experience in the pharmacotherapeutic management of pediatric patients. University of the Sciences in Philadelphia offers this residency in conjunction with The Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
