The faculty and staff of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration are dedicated to continually improving drug therapy and pharmaceutical care through the discovery, application and dissemination of knowledge about drugs and drug use. Cathy Y. Poon, PharmD

Dr. Poon received her pharmacy degree from St. John's University and completed post-doctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Oklahoma, where she developed expertise in pediatric pharmacotherapy. She coordinates one of the capstone courses, teaches most of the pediatric course material and maintains an active clinical practice in a pediatric intensive care unit.

Mr. Bernhardt earned his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University. A past president of the New Jersey Pharmacists Association, he manages Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (rotations) courses in the final year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program and provides focused advising to students and alumni regarding internship and licensure processes.

Dr. Cawley holds a PharmD and BS from USP. A member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, he serves on the editorial boards of several biomedical journals, including Annals of Pharmacotherapy and RT: The Journal of Respiratory Care Practitioners. Dr. Cawley’s research interests are in the area of critical care pharmacotherapeutics, including topics in pulmonary, infectious disease, cardiology, toxicology and neurology.

Dr. Connors earned his PharmD from the University of Kentucky and his BS from the University of Wisconsin. He has completed a two-year clinical pharmacy residency at the University of Kentucky’s Albert B. Chandler Medical Center and a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy at the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia. His areas of interest include infectious diseases and their management, education abroad, and academic program planning and development.

Dr. Davis received her PharmD from the University of Kentucky and her BS in Pharmacy from the University of Arizona. An adjunct faculty member in the Hematology-Oncology Division in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, she is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and is board-certified in pharmacotherapy and oncology pharmacy. Her research interests include factors that influence the variability of anticancer drug disposition in humans and mechanisms of treatment-induced cell death.

Gladys Garcia Dueñas, PharmD

Dr. Dueñas earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. She also completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency with an emphasis in Community Care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Dr. Dueñas is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Pharmacy Administration. She is currently establishing a collaborative clinical practice site with Rite Aid Pharmacy and Cooper Family Medicine. Her clinical practice goals are to develop a medication therapy management (MTM) service at both these sites that meets the medication-related needs of patients and coordinates care among community pharmacists, physicians, and other members of the health care team

She is interested in scholarly areas involving the improving outcomes in patients with heart failure, ambulatory care, cardiovascular pharmacotherapeutics, and scholarship of teaching.

Dr. Frazier earned her PharmD from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. A member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the National Pharmaceutical Association, she also runs a clinic at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, where she actively manages drug therapy for anticoagulation, diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension.

Dr. Gans earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Prior to this, he completed a residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned his Bachelor in Science from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Dr. Gans has formerly been the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy as well as the Dean of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He was the founding Chairman of the Delaware Valley Regional Poison Control Program. He was most recently the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Pharmacist Association in Washington, DC. Currently, Dr. Gans is the Executive Director of Healthcare Leadership. In addition, he is a professor Mayes College of Healthcare Business and Policy as well as a Professor of Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration.

Since 1995, Dr. Philip P. Gerbino has helped guide the growth of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia from its roots as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (PCPS) into the five colleges that now comprise the University. Prior to being named president, Dr. Gerbino served as dean of the School of Pharmacy and vice president of academic affairs. He also retains the title of “Linwood F. Tice Professor” at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Dr. Gerbino earned his BS in pharmacy and his PharmD from PCPS where he has worked for more than 30 years as an educator and administrator. Dr. Gerbino continues to serve on editorial and advisory boards of pharmacy, medical and healthcare publications, and is a consultant on strategic planning, marketing, and new business development to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. He has or continues to serve on boards of private and public healthcare companies and professional and civic organizations.

Dr. Hussar is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Drug Information Association, the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association and the Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Pharmacists Association and is a past president of the Drug Information Association and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association. Dr. Hussar’s research interests are in the areas of new drugs, drug interactions, patient compliance and issues facing the profession of pharmacy. He writes and edits the Pharmacist Activist Newsletter (http://www.pharmacistactivist.com).

Dr. Mandos received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Northeastern University. She completed a post doctoral residency in psychopharmacology at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and is a board certified psychiatric pharmacotherapist. She also completed the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Leadership Fellows Program. Currently, she teaches at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, the UPENN School of Medicine, and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Mandos has been an investigator in over 130 Phase II, III, and IV clinical drug trials and has published multiple original research articles. Dr. Mandos serves as a consultant to the Delaware County Office of Mental Health and is the sole pharmacist on the editorial advisory board for Prevention Magazine. Mandos’ areas of interest are the mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

William F. McGhan, PharmD, PhD

Dr. McGhan holds a PharmD from the University of California, San Francisco, and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. He has generated substantial amounts of outside funding as principal investigator on numerous grants and contracts. He has published several books as well as more than 200 journal articles and chapters. He is a past president of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science and has served on the board of directors of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Dr. McGhan’s research focuses on decision analysis, outcomes research and clinical economics.

Dr. O’Connor earned his PharmD and BS in pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and his MBA from Babson College. He has 40 years of teaching experience at institutions including Albert Einstein Medical Center, Ohio State University, Temple University School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences and Thomas Jefferson University, where he has taught pharmacy students, pharmacists, nurses and pharmaceutical industry professionals. His research interests include patient medication adherence and compliance techniques, pharmaceutical marketing, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacy management and implementation of patient counseling services.

His practice and teaching interests include medication safety, emergency preparedness and medication use systems, including automation, information systems and pharmacy and therapeutics committees and formulary processes. Dr. Sheaffer was presidential officer of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists from 2000 to 2003 and previously served on the ASHP Board of Directors as the chair of the ASHP House of Delegates. He also chaired the ASHP Research and Education Foundation.

Dr. Sloskey has held a number of clinical, administrative and academic positions in institutions including: Thomas Jefferson, Temple University, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. His current interests are related to the evaluation of biomedical literature based on evidence based principles as well as pharmacy related healthcare management.

Dr. Spinler has published more than 100 research articles, reviews and books chapters in the area of antithrombotic therapy.

Dr. Tietze holds a doctor of pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and a bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from the University of Kansas. She completed faculty fellowship programs at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Dr. Tietze is a pulmonary/critical care pharmacotherapy specialist. She is the author of numerous textbook chapters and articles in pulmonary and critical care therapeutics. Dr. Tietze is the author of the textbook Clinical Skills for Pharmacists: A Patient Focused Approach (Mosby) and is an editor for the Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs, published by the American Pharmacists Association.

Dr. Trent G. Towne is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy/University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He serves as an infectious diseases clinical pharmacist at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. In addition, he is the residency program director for the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at USP. Dr. Towne received his B.A. from Hanover College in 2002 and his Pharm.D. from Purdue University in 2006. Following his degree, he completed a pharmacy practice residency (PGY1) with Wishard Health Systems/Purdue University and an infectious diseases specialty residency (PGY2) with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System/University of Texas at Austin. He is an active member in ACCP, ASHP, SIDP and IDSA. Dr. Towne’s research interests include the effects of obesity on dosing of antimicrobials, diagnostic microbiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns with a special focus of gram-negative bacilli.

Vincent J. Willey, PharmD, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy within the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Prior to this position, he was the Vice President of Research for HealthCore, a health outcomes research company located in Wilmington, DE. He received his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Dr. Schwartz earned his Doctor of Pharmacy at the Bernard J Dunn School of Pharmacy and his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Dr. Schwartz’s experiences include hospital, long term care, and community pharmacy. His areas of interest include immunizations, diabetes, and medication therapy.
