Bioinformatics Major

As a bioinformatics major at University of the Sciences, you will receive a strong background in the sciences with specific training in computer science, chemical modeling, molecular biology and genomics. Here you’ll gain expertise in the new tools used for medical diagnosis and treatment that are beginning to move from the research laboratory to the hospital clinic and physician’s office.

A Key Discipline of the New Century

Described as the future of the life sciences and one of the key disciplines of the new century, bioinformatics combines molecular biology, chemistry, computer programming and mathematics to answer crucial health and genetic questions. The need for bioinformatics capabilities has been precipitated by the explosion of publicly available genomic information resulting from the Human Genome Project and related research. The effort by researchers from around the world to map and sequence the genome of many organisms will help scientists understand the mechanisms of life and unlock the mysteries of human health and diseases.

Why University of the Sciences Should Be Your First Choice

  • The University offers one of the few undergraduate programs in bioinformatics in the entire country and is the first university in Pennsylvania to offer a BS in the field.
  • You can earn an MS in bioinformatics in as little as one additional year of full-time study.
  • The structured and integrated curriculum gives you the needed background in the natural sciences, humanities, arts and social sciences, along with in-depth knowledge of computer science and computer programming.
  • Special emphasis is placed on practical skills in computer programming and working with different bioinformatic software and computer platforms.
  • You work with sophisticated computer software and hardware equipment.
